A lot of you are WAAAAAY overthinking this. The Matterhorn is there because Walt Disney thought it would be awesome. It was positioned where it is to replace a big pile of leftover construction dirt. It was originally listed as a Tomorrowland attraction because it was opened as a package deal with the Subs and Monorail. It later became part of Fantasyland because of Harold and the mountain’s Alpine theme, which ties in with Storybook Land and the Fantasyland Skyway Chalet.

And, yes, the Matterhorn belongs in Fantasyland. The Fantasyland track is also the better track (except for the splash).

You get a like for the first paragraph and a 👎🏼 for the second.

Switzerland pavillion at Epcot that never was.

As cool as that would've been, it would've seemed been redundant to the German pavilion (excluding the mountain). As someone of primarily German and Swiss descent I know they are two, distinct cultures but they are often conflated with one another in the eye of the public. The Mt. Fuji concept should have been (and still should be) built in Japan with Germany getting the Rhine River cruise.

I wonder if that is age and change wearing on him or if he's always had that demeanor. If he has always been that way, makes his whimsical and fantastical designs even that much more amazing.

It could also be that I met him minutes before he was about to auction off a lifetime worth of his works. With that said it does seem like from what I’ve read that he is bitter about some of the things they ve done with DL. He’s one of us!

Anyway he was nice enough to sign my imagineeering book. I also thought it was cool that it just so happens that this is the design of those first two pages of the book and where he signed...

I used to agree with this. Then I got old. And the bobsleds got less comfortable.

I remember being like 11 and I was so excited because my Aunts cool younger sister and her friend Holly (who I had a crush on and was like 7 years older than me) was taking me and my sister to Disneyland and all I could imagine was riding the old lap style Bobsleds with her.

She didn’t end up coming and I rode with my sister instead.

I do appreciate the smoother and longer ride the Fantasyland side offers!
I also like the better view of Harold, and the better placement of his final appearance. That’s the main reason I prefer FL now. But the FL splashdown is very weak. My favorite thing about the TL side is that final outdoor run around the base of the mountain to the much better splash.

And it was designed by Sweet Sweet Bobby Gurr.

I've recently been of the opinion that Gurr is a bit conceded- I think decades of moderate fame within Disney's fandom, and the fact that most of the people he worked with are now dead, have left him as the sole storyteller for various aspects of Disneyland construction.

The fact he didn't mention Arrow at all in the Imagineering Story show is testament, and his "If it has wheels at Disneyland I designed it" claim.

I think most people get like that when they get up there in age. When looking back, they start bragging about things they ve done, intentionally or not. Its not uncommon for facts to get a little hazy from age or just because you ve repeated the same story so many times. However, he does seem pretty sharp still.

In his case, he does have a lot to brag about. He comes off to me as a nice guy who is very happy about what he accomplished.
