The Magic has gone for us

Just got back from WDW, for which may have been our last time. This was our 7th visit in 10 years. To be honest, a lot of the magical pixie dust we had on our first and second trips has long since evaporated. Whilst our trip wasn't a complete bust - we finally got to go on the new Everest ride and saw the new Nemo show in AK as well as a few other minor changes which had appeared since our last trip in '05. We trudged around these parks and heaving pushing crowds with a sense of "not much has changed" and "we've already seen and done everything years ago". We chose this time of year because the place is decorated up and of supposed "light attendance".

We managed Mickey's Very Merry Party on the 4th Dec and even now, I'm wondering what it was I paid my money for. I expected something better than a free cup of tepid brown sludge with a circle of sickly sugar biscuit I couldn't eat. Yes all the rides were open, but we'd been in the park all day and already done everything. I just felt as if I'd been ripped off. Probably not as ripped off as those people who paid to go into the park to find that Wishes and Spectromagic parades had been cancelled because of it. I heard a lot of people moan about who spent a lot of money to come to WDW and have a lot of the best stuff cancelled because of this party.

We came to WDW at this time because of I wanted to see the Osborne Lights. We turned up to watch them, only to have them turned off an hour later - and the park close early - because of some 'private function' at Hollywood Studios. I hadn't finished filming them and I don't pay to be thrown out of a park early, why can't they have functions AFTER park hours? It was upsetting to see the lights switched back on just as we were driving out the car park lot. Again, it left us feeling disappointed and left out. We saw a lot of this "second-class" treatment outside of WDW in Seaworld and IoA. I am paying guest to WDW, and if it were not for paying guests, WDW would not exist. So why are paying guests being treated like this?

We decided not to bothered with any of the late magical hours, as by the time the parks close, we'd simply had enough and wanted to leave. Every night it was tiredness and boredom which drove us back to the hotel with no incentive to prolong our stay in the parks.

Then there was our hotel, the Coronado Springs Resort. Firstly, we had issues with basic cleanliness on arrival, our keys which never worked in the barriers, the lack of information given to us by Concierge (a long story here) then there is that rather useless and confusing Pepper Market restaurant and its lack of service.
We had to be shown to a table (As if we can't find our own empty table in an empty room), we then had to get our own food and then - because the staff were too busy talking with themselves, get up and get our own drinks from the cafe next door. Then I had an argument about why I should pay a service charge when I haven’t received any service.
After that, we never bothered going in there again. Compared to Riverside and French Quarter, this place is bottom of the list and the only time we would go back is only if everywhere else is full. (assuming we do go back). Don't even get me started on the bus services at Colorando Springs....one 40 min wait to MK one morning was enough, so we drove to each park everyday even though I didn't want to. As for trying to get a dining table anywhere in WDW, forget it. So we had to go outside WDW for a decent meal, having tired of greasy burgers and pizzas.

As I said, it wasn't a total loss but there was no magical experience to be had for us. What good times we had were washed away with heaving crowds, short-changing of times and events, unstable weather and long lines to go on "the same old stuff". Along with regular bouts of ride breakdowns, people cutting in lines, idiots waving camcorders in my face (when they have a clear view already) and the countless other activities by thoughtless people.

We have no plans to go back - simply because we would rather go somewhere else on vacation and put up with all that again. If we do, it won't be for a very long time.

"The place of a million dreams"? Sorry.

I can understand Disney not being for everyone, but I'm confused as to how someone who has been 7 times in 10 years was bored, and suprised by this. Personally, I don't get bored, but I can see how one might.

That report sounded like it was written by Brett Easton Ellis.

I can sympathize with being annoyed at early closing hours for private events, but then you write that you couldn't be bothered with the extra magic hours when those were offered, and you say that MVM was a waste of money.

So you were annoyed at being kicked out of the parks early, but when given the chance to stay late, you were just ready to leave — and when you poneyed up for a private event, you felt like you didn't get your money's worth.

I think you may have already reached this conclusion, but it sounds like you really just didn't want to be there at all.

Seven trips in 10 years and this one was so different and awful? What was so different this time? Sounds like the answer is simply your frame of mind. If everything was so disappointing, it's not WDW...it's you. The magic is still there, and you shouldn't have to work that hard to find it. We never have to.

It sounds like it's just time for you to start vacationing elsewhere. I hope you find a place that makes you happy.

Maybe a little bit more planning was needed to make the trip live up to your expectations. But I guess if you don't want to do the planning then you don't have to go to Disney. Like everyone has said, Disney just isn't for everyone. Sorry if you didn't have any fun what so ever.

We were willing to stay to the normal closing hours to get our money's worth - and in most cases we did. But I wanted to see more of the Lights at DHS - it was one of the main reasons I wanted to go to WDW, but this function got in the way.

MVMCP - in our opinion was a rip. We stayed late in the park for it and left about 1/2 hour before it closed because we had enough of it. We had no idea what to expect and was disappointed with what there was. Also there was a large number of people there who had not paid for the event (no wristbands) who were helping themselves to eveything going. At no time were we asked to show these to any CM's. With no enforcement, we could have saved ourselves a lot of money.

We went to WDW in anticipation of a magical time, but by the end, we left disillusioned and bored. It was not one single thing, but a collection of things which took away any magic there was. We loved WDW the first few times, we even had our honeymoon there. Now the place does nothing for us and is far too expensive for what there is. Maybe in a few years time, things may change. But for now, we look to other places to go.

I agree with Dreamscometrue. Sounds like you just didn't have the right frame of mind going into this trip.

My mom and I were able to have an absolute blast even though we were travelling with 2 other people who just didn't seem to get it. We were even forced to kick them off our dining reservations and make a whole new set of ressies while we were there (trip report: Survivor Disney World December 2008 coming soon). It's all in how fun YOU make it.

I'd be interested to know what night you were at the Party because the CMs asked for wristbands constantly the night I was there. Yes they allowed day guests to remain on Main Street for the first parade and the fireworks BUT these same day guests were NOT allowed past Main Street or into any of the stores either. Anytime we wanted to enter one of the lands, an attraction or even a store we were asked for our wrist bands.

And as for DHS closing early, it is fairly common knowledge that Pop Warner takes place the second week of December like clockwork and that they have a private function at DHS on the Friday before their competitions take place. This is probably the private function you ran into.

Judging by your posts it sounds to me like a little more planning was needed in order to fully enjoy Christmas at Disney.

I'm sorry you had a negative experience. I agree that MVMCP isn't worth it. The Halloween party is MUCH better IMHO.

I strongly believe that the party is best done on a day when you dont visit the MK. Do something else during the day, and head to the Mk around 6pm. I can well imagine that if you had been in the park all day long already, the party may have seemed a let down.

That is a perfect statement. We usually go to the paid party our first night we arrive. We plan a early arrival, stay around the resport and then go to the party. This saves a one day admission to a park and we don't get bored or tired.

I still don't understand how you can like it so much to go 7 times in 10 years, then all of a suuden find yourself bored and finding it too expensive.

Planning is KEY

A trip to the World in December is not like a trip at other times of the year. Besides knowing about the Pop Warner stuff, there is a lot more to plan for as well.

We rotate our annual trip between CHristmas one year and Halloween another. This year is a Christmas year- Dec.24-Jan 4th.

Some things i knew were a must-

TRIP LENGTH- sure it is more crowded so we budget and plan for more days to ensure we can enjoy everything. I cannot FATHOM how anyone could get bored with all of the special Holiday events going on at all parks. Christmas around the World in EPCOT, the special Christmas events at MK, the Jingle Jungle Parade at AK, Osborne Lights.....etc.

PARK HOPPERS- would NEVER do a trip without them. This way when you couldn't see the lights as long as you wanted at DHS, you could have come back by the next day etc. We always do the hoppers that way if we see a park is crowded that day, we go somewhere else and come back to that park. We always know MK Christmas Day is PACKED just like EPCOT on New Year's Eve and try to avoid those.

DINING- even in slower times now, with the three different dining plans, you HAVE to make reservations in advance. I have had my 12 days of reservations made for six months at least and had to plan it out. As soon as the EMHours are up, I look at those, coordinate my days, and make my dining reservations and have NO problems getting anything we want. And we did deluxe dining this time so we had to make a lot more.

EXPECTATIONS- we go in knowing as veterans what to expect. We know that on certain days we need to be at certain parks really early to get a fast pass for certain things and we know that there are things we will wait in line for etc. But we explain all to our five kids who are 9-20 and all understand. Since we KNOW what to expect ahead of time, there is no letdown when the line for Soarin' is three hours and we didnt get there early enough to get a fast pass. We simply wait to ride it until EMHours when the stand by line isnt so bad or something like that.

If you are there in a good frame of mind, and realize that there are so many more magical things to do and see besides the big name rides, you can be there in a really peak time, and still have a blast and make great memories for you and your family. We do it all the time and none of us EVER could get bored. It is never the same trip twice and we have been over 20 times in 15 years.

We even look forward to things like our favorite waiter at the 50's Prime Time who remembers my son year after year, and Sean at the Pop Century front desk who always takes good care of us, etc....

We love things like looking for the hidden mickey's as a family.

i guess we are just Disney FREAKS, because we LOVE IT, no matter how crowded. And sure we encounter rude people. Rudeness comes in many forms, like the stroller people from hell and the scooter drivers who belong in NASCAR, etc. and hte line cutters.....but in the grand scheme of things, NO ONE can ruin our trip unless we let them, and we just choose not to let them. We paid a lot fo money for our trip too and so we choose to smile and at the next meal we may joke about the crazy scooter driver, but we will never let anyone steal the magic from our family.

This is the first place my kids went after we lost everything in Katrina and it was special for us even before then, but now, it is simply our family magical place to all be kids together for a week or two.

Give it another shot and maybe if you relax and look for the good stuff, you will find it!

Good luck!

Shame that the magic has gone a little. I guess if you are already low you are going to be low. But to be fair, 7 times in 10 is still a lot of visits (i don't know how long you stay so it might not be that long overall) to the same place.
Throw something different into your diet every now and then. Maybe lay off Disney World for a while.
I get worried that it might happen one day. I plan for months and spend my 9 hours flight building up excitement, get their and after all that I feel its not the same anymore and feel down. Not happened yet, and I hope never, but its entirely possible.

I would love being able to afford to have been enough times to think "we're getting tired of that place, let's go somewhere else". Even the worst day at Disney is better than the normal everyday routine.
