The Haunted Mansion re-opens Friday!

I was talking about the stretching room scene, Zero going through the changing portraits, and the animatronic Oogie Boogie at the end of the ride before the mirrors.

So was I. Other than possibly the changing portraits, the other additions are in my opinion too loud and don’t mesh well with the aesthetics of the ride as is sits now. One of the reasons that I do not like DLR’s HMH is that it is over the top and doesn’t blend in with the traditional mansion décor. Ooogie and the new stretching room effects are part of it, but they aren’t any more over the top than other aspects of the overlay so it fits the overall theme of being bold and attention grabbing. Tokyo’s takes a more subtle approach. It still has its moments, but overall it blends in much better with the traditional mansion. Adding Oogie and the stretching room projection effects to Tokyo would not mesh with the more subtle approach it takes to HMH.

But they did build a useless Standby queue full of gimmicky whack-a-mole games and special effects that have all broken and become unusable. Stay classy TDO!
I admit I only went through FP line this trip, but I don't recall any gimmicky whack a mole games. What effects aren't working exactly?

So, change the Hitchhiking Ghosts in the mirrors to silly cartoon versions?

Have you seen it? It's actually pretty well done, all things considered.

And for all the folks here saying Magic Kingdom's is so much longer...it really isn't. The main difference is that you walk through the changing portraits and following-busts portion vs. riding through it in Florida. With the exception of the library and upside down stairs (which are maybe a total of 10 seconds), the lengths are pretty even stevens I'd say.

Now upkeep and effects on the other hand... WDW's got us beat.

It's all about presentation time, though. I feel like the way the scenes are presented in WDW allows for a greater impact of the Mansion's illusions. It makes the ride experience feel more in-depth.

I'm referring to this gimmicky Whack-A-Mole game from the 0:55 to 1:30 mark in this video. The sailor's crypt at the 1:10 mark hasn't worked for some time, as the young man figures out quickly in this video.

The Magic Kingdom's mirror scene is what I would describe as a guilty pleasure. I can't deny that it's cool, yet it's done so poorly, I just can't legitimately enjoy it. It's basically TV screens in the Haunted Mansion with off-model cartoons betraying the spirit of the attraction.

I DO agree that the Disneyland Mansion makes up for the "missing" former "sinister 11" portrait corridor, library, music room and "ghostess" in the crypt (AKA "Little Leota") with the walk-through portions before and after the ride. It's kinda like how Magic Kingdom's version of Pirates replaces the bayou and extra cave scenes with the themed queue line through the fortress. It's just that I think most people rush through these remarkable immersive themed walk-through portions and take them for granted on their way to the ride or to another ride and don't give a dang how awesome they are.

Agreed in full on the mirrors. I really wish they were done better.

And I'd still say that the minor versions of HM and POTC (DL and WDW respectively) still pale in comparison to the major versions of those attractions at WDW (HM) and DL (POTC). The walkthrough scenes are nice and I LOVE Davis' queue for POTC, but nothing beats those extra mins on the ride.

Posted this in the DL60 thread, but it probably belongs here, too.

From Mint Crocodile's twitter feed...

This is RIGHT after you exit the Mansion's attic and begin your descent into the graveyard. It was added when NBC was removed...

Anyone wanna bet this is where Hatbox Ghost pops up in a few months?

As you leave the attic, at the top of the ramp, you now see that.

So it's on the exterior of the attic scene, on the opposite side of the wall from where the bride is?

I'm wondering where the Hatbox Ghost would go exactly? Will he replace the bride, and have the bride switch back to her original spot on the right side of the track there? He can't go outside of the attic, hanging out on the roof. He'd have to go inside the attic. So what's the purpose of this new exterior roof panel as you leave the attic scene and theoretically "exit" the house and head out into the backyard and graveyard?

Maybe this new exterior roof piece is somehow needed to get the interior of the attic on the opposite side of the wall ready for the Hatbox Ghost?

Of course, that's assuming Miceage Updates over the last year are right and the Hatbox Ghost is returning for the 60th Anniversary.

I'm thinking that the "wall" is covering up a platform for him. He could be "inside" the Mansion's fake facade on the side, there, leering out at you.

As much as I despise the WDW NexGen/FP+ queue.... I'd rather have it and WDW's pristine and longer Haunted Mansion than Disneyland's shorter and much worse for the wear original version of the Haunted Mansion, tacky overlay included.

TDO might not want to spend money on a differentiated experience for the Mansion, and I usually dislike their spendthrift ways, but the WDW Mansion is kept up much better than the Disneyland version. I'm fine with that.

If there was anything 'huge' in Disneyland that I was looking forward to seeing and was really let down by, it was DL's Haunted Mansion. WDW's feels so much more precise and thematic. DL's felt very old and like it needed a serious refurb, not unlike WDW's Mansion before 2007.

I agree 100%. The HMH has been the biggest letdown in my visits to DL (about every 2 years). It's obnoxious and garish, and looks like Hot Topic puked all over the HM. Plus, the music and theming carry over to the rest of NOS and ruin the atmosphere. I really like NBC, but not in the HM.

I feel the ride doesn't really capture the tone of the film at all, not even visually. Shouldn't it actually be more gloomy and sullen like the original version of the Mansion? Instead, it's bright lighting, neon, garish colors.
