Trip Report The GRAND Birthday! *COMPLETED*

“Hey, Ma ~ you’re about to celebrate a BIG birthday. What are you going to do next?”
“I’m going to Disney World!”

If it were only as simple as it sounds in the commercial. But we all know that real life rarely aligns with what is portrayed on TV....or for that matter (dare I say?) social media. My mother was hitting a milestone on 2/1/2019 and I wanted to take her to her favorite vacation destination to celebrate. (The fact that it also happens to be mine was a bonus!) However when I presented the idea to her back in the fall, she was reluctant to accept my offer.

Ten years ago our extended family went to WDW to celebrate her last big birthday. During that trip, paramedics were called because my infant nephew was experiencing breathing difficulties; my sister-in-law got either food poisoning or a bad case of stomach flu which necessitated a doctor coming to her resort room (and an extended stay); and my dear Woody came down with similar symptoms which resulted in an ambulance ride to the ER on the night we arrived home.

Needless to say that was the end of our extended family vacations.

I had to clarify with Mom that I wasn’t planning a big gathering. Still, she wasn’t sure she wanted to go. My father was recovering from some recent health challenges and she was uncertain she’d feel comfortable leaving him. She asked for some time to think it over.

Meanwhile I jumped on some cheap airfare and booked the hotel, figuring it was worth the risk. Just before Thanksgiving, with my dad’s blessing, Mom decided she would like to go.

“Where will we stay?” she asked.
“It’s a big event. Where do you think we should stay?” I answered.
Mom paused and without waiting for her reply I continued: “It’s going to be a grand celebration, so we must stay at the Grand Floridian!”
Mom choked up and said, “I never thought I’d ever be able to stay there.”

Well now she has! And we had a wonderful time at the resort and in the parks. There was even a surprise or two.

As for this:
That's the interesting thing -- something new, fun, or outright bizarre happens on all your trips, and that's what keeps us coming back for more. It's kinda like a written version (with photos), of a Tuvalu WDW reality show. :p Looking forward to the next installment in the series.
Stay tuned for the bizarre!

I wish this trip could have been mother/daughter/granddaughter. Sadly, Em was unable to join us.

Who: Tuvalu and Mom
When: January 29 - February 2, 2019
Where: Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa (the “and Spa” gets me every time!)

Saturday, con’t

We left SSE and continued back to World Showcase. We did not have enough time for a full-service lunch but I had a quick service location in mind (and it’s probably not what you think!)

Guests were busy painting their own squares on the giant mural.

As we approached Canada, our noses were overcome by a most foul odor. It smelled like sewage and followed us all the way to the U.K. Very strange.

JB took our pictures at the Peter Pan photo op.

This is old news now....which I knew it would be, once I got around to posting the picture....but I was very excited to see workers on the gondola line at the International Gateway.

It seems like they moved super quick with testing the gondolas. I had the same thought when I was there and saw the gondolas testing - and then we came back and it was just old news. I understand your excitement though!

Love the footie pajamas! :joyfull:
By the way, she fell on the floor! :jawdrop: You might want to help her up. Just sayin' . . .
She always sits with her left leg bent! And I knew you’d like the jammies. 😉

I am honored to win a Mickey bar from you.
If you ever see me in a park I’m happy to buy you a real one!

It’s the little things, right @Spash007? :joyfull:

I had romanticized hopes of dining al fresco in the small courtyard outside Les Halles.

But reality....as it often does...smacked me right in the face.
An open table in the courtyard? Surely you jest!

I knew the seating situation inside wouldn’t be any better. It’s tiny. And the tables in back don’t even have chairs; you must stand while eating.

358113

I told Mom to go look at the menu while I kept surveillance over the dining area. Then she returned to keep watch while I went to order for us.

JB was on his own. :joyfull:

The line was short and I was worried that I would have to carry the food tray until a table became available. Imagine my delight when I saw that Mom had been victorious in table stalking!

358114

She managed to stake claim to not one, but two tables. So JB also had a place to sit when he returned with his food.

Funny story ~ he arrived munching on an eclair. “Dessert first?” I asked while peering at his baguette sandwich.
“The woman made me!” JB exclaimed. “I was preparing to pay for my sandwich, and she gazed at me and said something in French....all I understood was eclair, so I nodded and she handed this to me.”

“It would have been rude of me not to eat it.”

Whatever logic you want to use, cousin.

Mom and I saved our chocolate chip cookie until after we’d eaten our sandwiches. She had the Dinde B.L.T. ~ Turkey, Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato and Garlic Aioli (served cold). I had Jambon Beurre ~ Ham and Cheese with Dijon Mustard Butter (served warm).

358112

Oh my goodness. I can’t even describe how delicious my warm Jambon Beurre was! I typically order the turkey here (quelle surprise!) but decided to shake things up and go ham.

Now that I’ve had the ham, I can’t go back to turkey. I can’t. I won’t.

During lunch, Mom and I gave JB suggestions on how he could spend the rest of the afternoon in Epcot. He really wanted to see The American Adventure, so Mom and I agreed we’d escort him to the America pavilion, say our goodbyes, and head back to the GF to catch the Tragical.

But something happened that changed all that.

It does await ... or at least DLP does and I’ll be there in 48h 😂
Hope you have lots of fun!

This meme always makes me LOL. ❤️it!

I have a guess on what “happened that changed all that”. I’ll wait to see if I’m right.
Thanks for waiting for the reveal. Let us know if you were right.

We left Les Halles and headed towards America. We didn’t get far before stopping at one of the FARTS kiosks. A final souvenir had caught Mom’s eye and she wanted to make a purchase.

A little backstory ~ Until she arrived at WDW, Mom was unfamiliar with Spirit Jerseys. She began to notice them in the gift stores and I commented that Em and I have matching Spirit Jerseys and we love the oversized comfort they provide. (Tuvalette would call it a “cozy shirt.” 😍) On our first MK day we spent a lot of time (and $$) in Mickey’s Star Traders. It’s where we bought our matching navy Mickey sweatshirts. The store also had some new Spirit Jerseys.

I saw this one and HAD to have it. Woody has a fondness for the Tiki Birds.

I also saw this one. Em adores the colorful It’s a Small World facade.

358226

How much does she love it?
She made me buy this canvas print years ago.
358229

Sadly, there wasn’t an IASW Jersey in her size. But there was another one that she’s been wanting. I bought it for her as a consolation for missing the Grand Birthday trip.

358227

Anyhoo, Mom was definitely intriqued by Spirit Jerseys and had been pondering whether or not to get one for herself.

In the end, she couldn’t resist the FARTS Jersey featuring her favorite Figment.
