The alarm here goes off at 5:30, but it takes a little while to get me up and moving around.

Today is Emergency Preparedness Day. All schools in NY state will dismiss 15 minutes early...just to make sure the diaster plans are in place. We have had to activate the system in the past.
Any other states do this?

None that I know of...we just usually have severe weather/evacuation/lock down drills.

What would happen if Dinosaurs were still around?

Would we have a Dinosaur Drill??

Goodmoring :) Got my coffee and am ready for the day. It is Friday after all. :)

We don't do those drills here either. We only have tornado, fire, and lockdown drills (for if a nutcase gets into the school). How sad. We only had fire and tornado drills when I was in school.

Hey Freak honey... ummm... that turkeybaster thing.... that's gross. :hurl:  How about if I do the cookin' and everyone comes here. :)

We've had to lock down our schools once. Fire drills are standard, seems like every other day.

Oh how scary! I'm glad that schools have this system now though. My kids school has every door locked during the day except for the front door and one back door. Those two are closely watched for the most part. I'm not completely comfortable with the way the front door is handled though. It would still be easy for someone to come in and turn the other way towards the first grade hall. By the time someone could run out of the office to get them, they'd be up the steps and in a room.

There is only one door that opens from the outside when school is in session. We have "greeters" that sit inside. You have to register and get a name tag. When you go to the front office you are stopped, questioned and directed to your destination. Our elementary schools are rather small and most faces are known. Both my kids attended ths same school and they know me. The middleschool/highschool campus has security guards and a police officer in place daily. Still have to check in. Those schools are so large that its very easy to get lost.
We locked down once because a bomb threat was found in the HS that said they would have to find what school it was in within a very short period of time. Some senior thought it was a joke...now doin time...wanted some attention and got it. Zero tolerance here.
The school is right by a chemical plant...the kids get sent home whenever there is a problem We live 45 miles from NYC and most parents commute. There are very few of us home to get the kids.
Plans need to be in place.

Speaking of School safety, apparently the Feds have released a report indicating what schools nationwide are designated as being "dangerous" ( I don't know what criterias are used for this basis) and the state of Georgia had none falling into this category. I'll search to see if I can find a link. I heard this on my commute into work.

Thanks. I'd like to see that list.

We have to sign in and get a visitors badge as well. I wish they'd put greeters at the door though. They only do that on days when alot of parents will be up there.

Grizz, when the heck do you sleep? I was in a chat with you until 11:30 or so if I remember correctly!

And Elizabeth, I'll be there as soon as I can! I would never turn down a southern woman's cooking! :slurp:

Well, just put the last one on the bus. Came back to 12 cars in my driveway (200 ft long and 3 cars wide). My neighbor is having a yard sale...looks like its going to be a looong weekend.
And its starting to rain...again! Even the ducks have abandoned the place.

Anyone have any good ideas for dinner tonight? The kids are rebelling, just can't seem to please them.
Got to go shopping today so I'm open to suggestions.

What my mom used to do when her 5 kids were rebelling:

"Fix your own. I'm making enough for myself."

We stopped complaining for a looooooong time. :D

Here's an article on CNN about the "Dangerous Schools List". There's a link on the right with the full list.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/EDUCATION/09/25/unsafe.schools.ap/index.html

What happened to the days where there was a fight after school by the flagpole, one person won and one lost and it ended there? Now it's about 6th graders carrying semi-autos! :brick:
