So, my DH2B and I just spent the evening trying to sort out the relations of Donald Duck to Scrooge McDuck and Huey, Dewey and Louie. I think we have it pretty clear now. Scrooge and Donald's mother were siblings. Huey, Dewey and Louie are the triplet sons of Donald's sister Dumbella Duck. Apparently, the boys sent their father (Dumbella's husband) to the hospital after a prank involving firecrackers went wrong. During this time, they were sent temporarily to live with their uncle Donald while their own father was recovering. However, from this point on, Dumbella and her husband are never spoken of again. After awhile, the ducklings go to live with their grand-uncle Scooge McDuck permanently.
Now we can understand why Donald and Scrooge have different last names, because Scrooge is Donald's maternal uncle. But why do the triplets have the same last name as Donald? The only way is if their mother (Dumbella) and father had the same last name. So, there is perhaps a little imbreeding in the Duck family history?
