ok - i know that when DL first opened, that is all there was...
so its name is just Disneyland...

I know that WDW is the Walt Disney World Resort which consists of all the resorts, dd, water parks, and "THE MAGIC KINGDOM"

no, isn't wdw magic kingdom and Disneyland the same thing? (i mean, minus ride changes and stuff....)

so in California... why isn't it the Disneyland Resort with The Magic Kingdom Park and DCA? Instead of The Disneyland Resort with Disneyland Park, and DCA? (and the resorts, and their dd area...?)

just a weird question.

have a great day!:veryconfu

Just so there's no confusion:

WALT DISNEY WORLD (A.K.A. EPCOT)

Four Parks:

Magic Kingdom (1971)
EPCOT Center/Epcot (1982)
Disney's Animal Kingdom (1998), almost "Disney's Wild Animal Kingdom)
Disney-MGM Studios (1989), often times refered to "Disney Studios"

DISNEYLAND

Two Parks:

Magic Kingdom (1955), often times referred to "Disneyland Park"
Disney's California Adventure

Just so there's no confusion! :p

I've never hard the park in Anaheim referred to as the Magic Kingdom...is this just an unofficial moniker?

(And, BTW, the Studios opened in '89....but you knew that, of course) :)

ok....but was it more in a casual way, such as "come enjoy our magic kingdom", or was it more of an official name? And has the name appeared on any official merchandise, tickets, literature, etc. for the park?

(and, yes, I realize this doesn't matter all that much, but...hey, it's an interesting question, especially with the place out there starting to expand more now)

On Disney's site its only refered to as Disneyland Park. A part of the Disneyland Resort. I agree with Wilt that this doesnt really matter but this thread reminds of people who call MK "Disney World" as though it is the park's official name. I have been known to correct whoever says such things. At that point the corrected party then informs me that I am way too uptight about Disney.

More along the lines of, "Have a great stay at the Magic Kingdom!"

*shrug*

PS...add me to that pet-peeve list!

SCENARIO 1
"When are you going to Disney World?"
"Next month...we're going to EPCOT."
"No, DISNEY WORLD, not EPCOT!"

SCENARIO 2
"Hey - look! It's the big ball!"

SCENARIO 3
"IT'S A great big beautiful tomorroooww...."

Shoot me now! :brick: :hammer:  :p

In "Birnbaum's Official Guide to the Disneyland Resort" they always refer to the park as the Magic Kingdom to avoid any confusion. However, they do state that the official name is "Disneyland Park." This is the only place I've seen it refered to as "The Magic Kingdom" since WDW opened.

"a kingdom by any other name would smell..."

I just returned from the Disneyland Resort and while there I heard cast members refer to the Disneyland Park as "the magic kingdom." This was done in areas like monorail stations to designate the monorail's destination, etc. It was the first time I heard "Disneyland" being referred to as "the magic kingdom" while on property.

From what I've read, calling Disneyland park "Magic Kingdom" was more of a marketing catchphrase. The park was Disneyland but many ads for the park would say something along the lines of "Come see Walt Disney's magic kingdom- Disneyland".

Intriguing, no? :animwink:
Didn't they sort of give up on that whole idea when they dropped the "Center" from EPCOT Center and just renamed it Epcot?

I haven't seen or heard anything official from Disney calling WDW "EPCOT" for a while. Actually, the only time I ever heard them refer to it that way was in the EPCOT Center opening special on Vault Disney. Ah, how I miss Vault Disney.

Officially, Disneyland Park is referred to as the "magic kingdom" only as a means of description.

Example:
Welcome to the magical kingdom of Disneyland.
or
Welcome to Disneyland, Walt Disney's magical kingdom.

Also, in the 20 years I've been going to WDW, and the 10 or so of actually studying the place, I've never, ever, heard of the property as a whole being referred to as "Epcot". As far as I know, Epcot Center referred to the park only, and was meant as a futuristic sounding name. They changed it to just Epcot because the "Center" just didn't catch on, and really didn't sound futuristic.
If anyone can point me to some information that is different, please do.

i absolutely can't STAND these situations...

IN Epcot...

me - are you having a great day ma'am?
guest - YES! We are fixing to go to DisneyWorld
me - ma'am, you are in Disney World
guest - no, we are going to Disney World, where the Castle is,
and then we are going to Universal Studios to ride the Tower of Tower, then going to the Animal Kingdom, then going back to DisneyWorld...
me - #^*@)(*#^_!@(&#*&***&$*#( KILL ME NOW @(@!*&(#&

anyway, I think Disney should completely think about their naming of the parks... here is how it should be...(since i am a genius)... lol

The Disneyland Resort with
The Magic Kingdom
Disney's California Adventure
and so on

The Walt Disney World Resort with
The Magic Kingdom
Epcot
The Disney Studios
Disney's Animal Kingdom
and so on...

The Disneyland Resort Paris with
The Magic Kingdom
The Disney Studios
blah blah blah

and,
The Disneyland Resort Tokyo... blah blah blah

i don't know, just makes more sense that way, instead of
in california
The Disneyland Resort with
Disneyland and DCA...

That's really funny, and at the same time a little sad. It's amazing the people you meet sometimes.

Here's my story: I'm on a bus going to MGM and eavesdropping on the couple in front of me's conversation. They're looking at the ToT as we approach it, and this guy says to his wife, hey that's that big thrill ride they have here, the Tower of DOOM!" The Tower of Doom? Where do these people come from?

During my brief bellhop phase, I once had a guy walk toward me in the queue, point at the giant building, and say "Hey, buddy, Tower of Power this way?"

I also had a tough time explaining to a woman exactly why she was going to have trouble finding E.T. in the Disney-MGM Studios.

This is a good point I was about to bring up: For a while, the Magic Kingdom WAS Walt Disney World; although that hasn't been the case for some 21 years now, you can't really blame people for not changing what they call the place just because the company did.
