The Disney Channel

"It is not myself I am thinking about, but it is the affect of what might happen to whatever is left that bothers me" -- Walt Disney
The "new" Disney Channel is ignoring the very principles they were founded under and is spitting on the Disney name as a whole.
The following comment is from a once proud Disney Channel viewer who has signed the official petition. They sum up our case perfectly:
"I live in an area where the Disney Channel is a premium channel. After subscribing for nearly ten years, we unsubscribed in the fall of 1998 ... Fall [of] 1998 was when I started college, so I had grown up with the Disney Channel but had lost interest with the changing program. Without me at home, my parents nixed the channel. Through the 'old' Disney Channel, I was introduced to wonderful old movies. It was on Disney that I first saw a lot of the Disney classics as well as Hollywood classics like the musicals of Rogers and Hammerstein. It used to be programming that my parents and I could watch together when I was younger. Now the only group your channel plays to is the 12 and under crowd. Shame on you! Disney is about family and once this channel was for family, now it’s a commercial filled unwatchable channel for Disney fans. I might as well watch Nickelodeon or MTV and I don't have to pay extra."
We are not saying that they should get rid of programs such as Lizzie McGuire and Boy Meets World. Rather, mix current shows in with other daytime programming such as higher quality behind the scenes shows, Classic Hollywood (A Disney Channel series that used to show live action films from Hollywood’s Golden Age), cartoon shorts, old cartoon series from Disney Afternoon (Perhaps the channel could have its own two hour Disney Afternoon show with rotating cartoons each day; like Pepper Ann, Ducktales, Talespin, and Doug one day; Tarzan, Recess, Goof Troop and Darkwing Duck another; and so on), and vintage episodes of Walt Disney’s television shows. Bring back the yearly Animation Festival, Disneyland/Walt Disney World history shows and opening day programs on each parks birthday. It’s not too much to ask for. The station would not only re-gain its legacy and original reputation, but it would undoubtedly receive a broader and more diversified audience.
Hey ... Why not just turn Disneyland into a giant playground with shops? There's an idea. After all, it would be cheaper to operate and future generations will know it only it as a giant kiddy area. Not the family entertainment giant it once was.
Just like the Disney Channel.
If certain areas in this company ignore their principles, they stop the Disney name from flourishing. Not just as a company. But also as a man. A pioneer. Walt Disney, to be precise. Whose philosophy in the Disney Company was always to entice people to visit all of their masterpieces by providing nothing but "High quality family entertainment." The company he built currently preaches about family, yet at the same time ignores the very aspects and principles of family entertainment upon which they were built.
When the Disney Channel began to ignore these ideals, they helped to stop the Disney name from flourishing. Not just as a company. And Flourishing into what it was destined to be.
But also as a man. And What he was always meant to be.

If anything, transform ABC Family into Walt Disney Family and put old Disney programming there. What is the harm of mixing in classic Disney films and TV shows for current and future generations to enjoy? After all, "this" is where Disney came from; "this" is where Disney was more of a magical legacy than a generic brand name, such as Nickelodeon or MTV.
I remember watching Bonanza on the Hallmark Channel one night, and I got kind of teary eyed during the commercial breaks when they showed previews of what westerns and original all-American movies were coming up. I remember thinking to myself "This is how the Disney Channel used to be; these are the values upon which it was built." The only difference is that Disney included cartoons and other children's programming during weekday mornings and afternoons.
But the Hallmark Channel is what the Disney Channel once was; and what the Disney Channel was always meant to be.
And It’s sad.

There's a Disney Channel..?? News to me.....

In all seriousness though, I agree. I haven't watched the channel for a couple of years now. It's just plain bad. Nothing even remotely entertaining. Much less "Disney."

It doesn't matter as long as the shows are popular.

But please, if you agree with this cause, get involved. The homepage does contain more than a simple petition to sign.

We cannot gaurantee a change. But if nothing is done, "nothing" will ever have a chance of changing

Disney used to be geared towards the entire family, and now they're not. Nickelodeon used to be geared towards the kiddie crowd, and they still are.
TDC was built upon certain principles, and they have now abandoned them. Lizzie McGuire is not family entertainment. Neither is Boy Meets World, Sister Sister or So Weird. Programs and films like Heidi, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of Greene Gables, Davy Crokett, White Fang, White Fang II, Inside Disneyland, Flight of the Navigator, Canterville Ghost, Iron Will, etc upheld the channel's promise of high quality entertainment, and the reputation that Disney had first set well over fifty years ago.
Why can't future generations be exposed to this type of programming? They deserve to know about the classics; after all, this is not only where Disney came from, but this is the guiding principle -- family entertainment -- that Walt Disney fought so feverishly, and selflessly, for half his life.
And the principles upon which Disneyland and WDW were built.

Well, Disney Channel is showing some Disney movies. I think they're showing Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and George of the Jungle. I think there's more. By the way, White Fang stunk. It stayed only 10% true to the book. It doesn't deserve to be a classic. By the way, Nickelodean was once geared toward the kiddie crowd, now it's geared to the very abnoxiouse kiddie crowd.

Whether or not you liked White Fang is irrelavent. TDC is no longer the family entertainment channel it once was, and was always intended to be.

And It feels good, for me at leasdt, to be fighting for what's right.

For you Pete's Dragon fans:

Every little piece...every little piece...
They just took a scissor and clipped it up, ripped it up.
Every little part, once a work of art...
Yet, there's enough of it to go around.
(They just want money, money, money by the pound)...

And speaking of Pete's Dragon,
There's room for everyone in "this world" if everyone makes some room.

Oh..wait...room costs money.

I'm so glad people are approaching this issue, as I am getting tired of the endless new "original movies" being crammed down my throat. I've only actually enjoyed two of them. They need to bring out their animated films.Do they think that kids won't like to watch them or something so they don't show them?
Ad what about the old short cartoons? now you can only see 'em on Vault Disney. I personally perfer the older shorts
to the newer ones.

It's all about money and what they "think" people will like (How the h*** do they know?) vs what they won't like. God ... they don't even advertise their Vault Disney or Walt Disney Treasures DVD's; it's as if current Disney doesn't want today's generation to know about the classics ... the real family entertainment films.

Since I'm on spring break now, I will fortunately have more time with this campaign.

Yes Trekkie I also believe in your thoughts on the DC it was also once a premium channel with my cable provider but now has since been included in the regular line up. I too would like to be able to watch the classics and not have to search for them in the stores or try to rent them in the video stores only to be left in the dissapointment of not finding them. The DC quality of programing is now geared toward the young unfortunetly not the young at heart

Here is a somewhat heartbreaking note that I got from a person who signed the petition:
"I know that I took some of the excellent shows for granted that were on the Disney Channel in the evenings (My Tivo would automatically record anything with Disneyland in the title). But now some short sighted execs have cut many of the true "Disney" shows. I teach 4th grade, and interestingly enough, one of my students asked one time "You mean Walt Disney was a PERSON?" Bring back the classics so that the kids will learn about Walt and his dream."

It seems that some people are referring to Vault Disney still being around. The Vault was closed in early september and will not be coming back.

I hate the new Disney Channel and want it to be the way it originally was. Bring back the classics!

With our family vacation comming up, I have been thinking about this topic the last few weeks. As for me any thing Disney gets us excited for our vacation. At this time the absence of the original
Disney Channel programing is missed very much.

My wife and I miss the old Vault Disney. When the kids were sick
or we couldn't sleep, we could find some comfort watching all of Walt's old shows. Whether it was the animal shows, the old clips of Walt, opening up Disney Land, The adventures of Zorro, Scarecrow, or the old cartoons.
It reminded us of the Sunday nights on NBC ,and probably a more simpler time.

I dont understand the Disney execs, Vault Disney was on primarily
in the early AM., during which most informercials are on.
I would think the original audience would still be there to watch it.
I also think there should be more new shows about Disney Land and WDW. The travel channel has more Disney, then the Disney Channel.
IMHO people love this stuff and can't get enough of it.
This is proven by people on these and other boards waiting patiently for the new vacation DVD or vidieo.

This thread probably needs to be on the resort board also.

We need to bring at least some part of the original programing back.
Good Luck with the petition!
It's a great cause!

admittedly, i have not watched the disney channel in quite some time. it's part of my cable package, but very rarely do we actually turn it on... but - based upon all of the comments that i have seen here - and the basic assumption that some people are watching and enjoying the "new disney channel" - my thought would be similar to what was basically said here already...

why not have 2 disney channels - one devoted to the old classic disney that everyone loved... and one devoted to the new disney that seems geared toward a new generation?

surely disney can afford this and it would certainly please nearly everyone....

just my thought.....
