News The crane.....

For three months they should order the sausage in. 1/4 of the year the sightline is affected, not what I would call guest centric thinking.
It isn't there for nearly as long as everyone seems to think. They put up the lights, remove the cranes and bring them back to take them down again. I only remember one extended stay in the spring when the did some major repair work the castle. I, for one, am happy about having that reaction because that is one of the main reasons why they don't do overlays in WDW. People barely tolerate having things down for a brief time. Can you imagine what would happen if the shut down HM for around six month a year to do the holiday overlay. There'd be a revolution. We have to remember that those thousands of lights do not put themselves up especially when we considerate "Guest" insisted that they only be put up eight hours of every day in the dark. Maybe if we were to be just a little more tolerant it would be done a lot quicker, but, for a brief time our magic bubble would be popped.

Just the classic example of everyone wanting to eat he sausage, but, no one wanting to see how it is made.
I think it was Mark Twain who said "No man who likes sausage or respects the law should watch either being made."
Watched hot dogs (wieners) being made one time at a meat packing plant. Couldn't eat a hot dog for three months.
You would think it would cost less in the long run to put up some sort of permanent lighting rather than installing it every year.
One way to look at it though is that since the construction crane is the state bird of Florida you have the opportunity to make photos of this one in its natural habitat.

It’s funny you mention the crane it’s there in the back but you can’t really notice it I was going to take pictures the other day I’ll take one tomorrow

The crane was deployed week at least by the week of Labor Day. I don't mind seeing it parked behind the Castle. What I did mind was that shuts down the path from the Castle to the Wishing Well, closing a nice short cut.

I suppose on the surface it would seem that a permanent solution is logical, but, the side affects are the problem, I believe. Putting a permanent system embedded in the castle only to be used about 3 months a year would be 1. Very costly, 2. Require that they drill tens of thousands of holes in the outer skin. 3. Doing that creates entry areas for the famous Florida torrential rains to find spots to drive water into the interior. 4. The mind boggling expense to wire it up inside a structure built almost 50 years ago. 5. The equally impossible task of maintaining (bulb replacement/cleaning, not to mention that ongoing need to repaint from time to time). 6. The fact that it would be impossible to not see those thousands of holes in the outer facade when close to the castle thus ruining the view all year instead of just three months. 7. The likelihood that at some point in time the public will grow tired of it and want something new, then what do they do with all those holes that still need to be maintained, and want to put something new on it. So what seems a no brainer is anything but that. Bring on the state bird of Florida. It's just a minor inconvenience for a memorable sight during the holidays.

As has been discussed in previous years, it's very easy to use Photoshop to remove the crane from your photos.

And then there is me. I have rather enjoyed the documentation of all the Cranes EVERYWHERE in WDW. The Castle brings a lovely view for the holiday, it is awesome. I'll take the cranes while not pretty will bring new things to the Florida parks. I have photos of the removal of the train station from Frontierland that added Slash when my adult son was a tot. Often Cranes bring nice things.

They’ve been doing this for so many years now and I’m used to it, but I don’t like it. I also don’t much care for the castle dreamlights anymore. Been there done that.

Personally, I don’t see why they don’t just skip doing this now and just use the projection mapping for a similar effect. After all, it would save them LOTS of time and money, and they only use it for the Christmas parties anyway.

I believe they light the castle on non-party nights as well, but I would agree that projections could achieve a “similar” effect. It’s not often I’d suggest WDW do less work but this is one of those times for me.
