the cost of disney

Hi,

Has the price of a Disney vacation gone out of whack??

We are avid Disney vacationers, we have been every year for the last 6 years and always stay on site, with dining plan, park hopper and more. However, due to logitical reasons, this time we will be off site but close to downtown. We have decided to eat and explore the World on the outside, i.e. boardwalk, downtown and resorts restaurants, no parks. While investigating ADR,S , i came across the individual resorts, The Contemporary is $1000/nite, many moderates are going close to $300/nite. is this crazy???

Has Disney become out of reach for average joe vacationer?? Being Canadian to boot, with the exchange, wow!!

Any thoughts has the pricing been deliberatly set at a higher level??

cheers

It's likely the room types you're looking. Most moderates are $200-225 a night, for standard rooms. Values are $150, and deluxe hit around the $400 mark.

However, that doesn't include villas, suites, speciality rooms etc. And that would be before any discounts.
To add to that, seasonal differences can also make a drastic difference in price.

A standard room at the Boardwalk will run you $429 during value season. The same room will run you $683 during holiday season.

Everything gets more experience, including Disney. I've said it before: Go anywhere in the world and it's going to be more expensive than Disney if you eat well and are entertained the whole time. Traveling is expensive and isn't getting cheaper.

i agree everything has gone up, but the vacation that used to cost us $3800, is now $5000. we have only one child, i can't imagine a family with 2 or three kids...phew!

It just seems to go up faster than the rate of inflation. Maybe it's just me...

Last time we drove our company car down (free gas but we pay annual taxes on the car), shared a rented house off property with friends and used the veterans military discount on tickets. I don't forsee us every staying on property and using the dining plan - out of budget.

It may be the same for us in the future. Mind you we always drive, flying cost are way out of control.

this will be the first time we stay off site, kinda curious how it will go. The benefit of staying on-site, you get immersed in the disney experience...friendly staff , have a magical day etc..

If you did all that, all you bought at "Disney" prices were park tickets and food? That's really not expensive at all for your entertainment. The Disney food isn't expensive other than the $3 water and snack type things. Even awful place slike Chilis or Olive Garden have worse food and are even more expensive.

$350 for a 7 day Park Hopper that is all your entertainment for a week isn't bad at all. That's only $50/day. I paid $100 for 2 people for a movie, food, and a couple drinks. Lasted 2 hours and it wasn't a good movie...

We did a character meal which was totally worth it. We ate breakfast at the house, brought snacks, did either a big late lunch and light dinner or vice versa in the park.

We priced-out staying in the parks, (even the DoD's Shades of Green), meal plans if we stayed on WDW property, even consulted AAA for package deals, etc., and the way we did it we saved tons and we had a blast just as much as we had in the past when we flew and did the whole WDW package deals. The benefit we had with a house, was our own pool and hot tub, and a ton of more space. We also had our own laundry room - I hate going home with dirty laundry - I'm sick like that (does laundry on vacation). The only drawback was parking at WDW... A small price to pay.

We went in November and stayed in our huge tent which is 18ft x 12ft with its own screened in front porch. We stayed at a KOA and made the 10 minute drive every day. For a 5 night stay with 4 day park tickets, me and my wife only spent about 1300 dollars for the tent site, food, tickets, souvenirs, etc. We're both teachers so we try to save money everywhere we can so we can travel during the summer.

We only decided to do this when disney raised the prices like they have. Our first year we went we stayed in value resort and loved it. A year later the price went up and the we're forcing us to sleep in two double beds. They would not put a king in there like they had done earlier. To get a king room we were told we had to move up to moderate which was a huge increase in price. Therefor I decided to skip out on it all together and save a ton of money. We both really enjoyed camping anyways.

It often does as the rate of inflation rarely coincides with luxury goods such as a Disney vacation. At best, the rate of inflation is the minimum you can expect those goods to increase as long as the demand is there.

Back in the late 70s/early 80s. Stayed in a MK view tower room with a friend and as students we were both worried if we could afford to split the room cost...for one night!

Back when the average household income was a little over 13 grand a year.

Exactly. People seem to not take into account salaries at the time when bringing up what things used to cost. Disney has always been a serious expense for most people.

I do agree that the last 10 years have seen, in my opinion, ridiculous increases in price, with little to no increase in the quality of the product in the park. Ten to fifteen years ago our family of five was going every year for 7 days. That dropped to every year for 5 days, then every other year for 5 days and we're now looking at 5 days once every two years. With the excessive crowds at almost all times of the year, having to book ADRs 180 days in advance and all the cutbacks in food services and merchandise WDW doesn't even come close to providing the same experience it did not all that long ago.

I was looking at our Disney file comparing trips...I remember Values for under $60! But, more recently we went to Yacht Club 7/17/2010 departed 7/24/2010 We had APs back then so no park passes...but we had the AP dining plan add on option (reg. plan with QS and TS option). 5 in our family the girls were 14,12 & 7 then.....The total cost we paid for a standard room that slept 5 with tax was $2400.08 This was with the AP discount and again...no tickets on that cost. But, looking at Yacht Club for this summer for those same dates we would be over $5000 and still no tickets. That is doubled. My income in 5 years hasn't doubled so I'd say pricing has started to get unrealistic.
We are going in less than a week with a band trip but decided to skip the annual summer trip of at least 8 nights..usually two weeks. We are able to do other trips for less money and include dining and entertainment. I love Disney but until they get improved we will spend our money elsewhere....esp. the dining aspect....that was one thing we really looked forward to and now...not so much :(

I'm not sure what you are looking at, but a check of Disney's web site has a Garden View room for 7/11/2015 - 7/18/2015 for $3123 at the Yacht Club with 2 adults and 3 children. While an increase from 2010, it certainly isn't double. Where do you get your $5000 from?
