Trip Report The cat had its own hotel room? What'choo talkin bout Draybook? Our Spring Break 2018 trip...

Placeholder for now, but let that first part sink in. Let the curiosity marinate in your melons.

I'll be back this weekend with a disheveled trip report and random photos.

Well, I have a few minutes and I'm waiting for these photos to upload. So, I guess I'll start off with some details of the trip. This was originally supposed to take place from 2/24 through 3/11 and we had a rental house booked. However, due to some financial changes and hold-ups, we pushed it back a week...and then another week. The original dates were set to coincide with the wife and two teens' birthdays. Amy and Ashley share the same birthday, 2/25, and Justin's birthday is 3/6. Plus, there was supposed to be an anime con that they wanted to go to on the weekend of 3/9 at some hotel attached to the Florida mall or some other mall.

But, since we couldn't make those dates, getting to go to Disney was still a bonus, right? Yeah, except we forgot to factor in the Spring Break crowds. Meh, no biggie. So, due to a glitch with some of the budget, we had to drop the rental house and settle on a hotel room. Man, that was quite the experience, especially when you're talking about a party of 6. It was a bit snug and we hated not having a washer/dryer at our immediate disposal, but we made it work.

Well, not only did the dates get pushed back, but we almost didn't even go. The original called for us to be on the road by 3 am on 3/9. We didn't get on Hwy 78 until almost 6 pm. I had been calling the hotel all day to let them know that we were indeed coming and that they had already charged my card. They were cool about it and had automatically checked us in to make sure the system didn't boot us out.

This trip was much less eventful, and that's a good thing. I don't remember if I posted about our trip in October, but we ran out of gas on that journey, right around the Live Oak area. Needless to say, the Mrs. was NOT happy with me after that and when it's midnight in the middle of nowhere, FL, it was an adventure. Anyhow, none of that foolishness this time. I made sure to stop for gas any time we got close to having 50 miles left until E. We arrived there around 9 am and got settled into the room. Seeing as how I had been up for 24 hours and did all of the driving, the wife took the kids to run their errands while I caught a much needed nap before heading to get our APs at Disney Springs.

And that, my friends, is where I'll leave you folks hanging for now. I'll try to post some more tonight when I get home from work. Thanks for following along!

Following. My husband and I were there right before you, from 2/27 to 3/7, at POFQ. Interested to see what you think of the crowds and wait times.
For us, the crowds were not too bad, but the wait times seemed extra long for the amount of people around.

We're been during the first week of March before, for our daughter's cheer. Twice, as a matter of fact. Oddly enough, I don't remember too much about the crowds but I think that's because we didn't have two little ones with strollers back then. Not going to lie, it was pretty crazy. One thing we did was just be laid back and not expect too much, which I'll delve into during the report. I will say one thing, though. I think there's something to the theory floating around here about Disney inflating the wait times. The one time we were able to get on Kilimanjaro Safari, the posted wait time was 55 minutes but we spent only about 10 minutes in line.

Ok, so to pick up where I left off. So, after letting me get in an hour or two nap, the wife and kids swung by and picked me up. We got ready and headed to Disney Springs to purchase our APs via the gift cards we had been buying from Target. Quick backstory on that. So my wife had to redo her Target Red card for some reason. Well, while she was waiting for the actual card to come in the mail, she was given a temporary card or something to use. The problem is that they gave her guff about the 5% discount because it kept popping up some error. They said to try smaller amounts than the $500 we were trying to purchase and that the reason it might take lower amounts was because the account approval was a "sign of good faith" as to the validity of our attached bank account. Yeah, nonsense.

Long story short, we had $3900 in gift cards, mostly $50. I knew it was going to be fun turning those in for the APs. The parking garages were full, a sign of how busy it would be. So, we were directed to park in the lot next to Cirque De blah blah. Since Jace was getting cranky, Amy decided to stay back with the kids while she gave him his bottle and they would meet me at Guest Relations. I hurriedly made my way there, navigating through the crowds. I was shocked how crowded it was but hey, we're at Disney. When the hostess greeted me, I told her I was there to get APs and she told signed me in and told me it might be a 30 minute wait. I meandered over to the corner by where they keep the maps and started scratching off the little gray spots on the back of the gift cards. Maybe 10 minutes later, a young lady named Amy from Brooklyn came and led me to a little office.

Needless to say, she was shocked at the amount of gift cards we had. After about 10 minutes, the transaction was complete and we were once again AP holders. Now, I will say that when she told me the total, it was about $400 more than what the website had shown and I asked her about that. She told me that sometimes the tax isn't on there and sometimes the online pricing is off. Well, after a 14 hour drive, I wasn't about to walk out without them. However, this would come into play a few days later. Luckily for me, I just so happened to have stashed away an extra $500 "just in case" money.

So I made my way outside and met up with the family. We went back to the car and grabbed a bite to eat off property. It was probably around 6 pm by the time we made our way to the Magic Kingdom. Now, as most of you know by now, we've become horrible at keeping track of the trip. So, I will just inform you that we basically just hopped around from park to park and the majority of the trip, we ended each night at the Magic Kingdom. Most of the time, we tried to be the last ones on the Haunted Mansion. Tim Tracker may be the king of the bus, but I always try to be king of the mansion!

I'll just toss in some random pics here and come back later to add some of our thoughts about the trip and get back to that whole "cat had its own room" deal. Also, we met this really nice couple at Pirates on our last night there. I never did catch their names, but they said they were semi-locals and they are on these forums as well as Disney Junkies on FB. I hope they're reading and if so, howdy again!

Okaaayyy . . . :cautious: Wow.

Thank goodness you had an extra $500 with you for "just in case".

P.S.: Baby is so cute!

So, to clear up the pricing situation. In the three days following the AP purchase, it kept lingering in my mind that something wasn't right. Well, I finally found the receipt and looked it over. Mind you, there were so many gift cards that she had the receipt folded over 4 times and stapled together. I found where it listed the pass type and sure enough, she had charged us for Platinum PLUS APs. That explains it. See, she said Platinum when she was doing her thing on her PC, so I knew something had to be off. Regardless, at the end of the night when I found the error, I went to Guest relations while Amy and the kids hung out at the west rose garden. I can't remember the CMs name, but she was a very nice young lady from Japan and she not only reversed the excess charge on my CC, but also gave us a gift card with the balance AND she gave me celebration buttons with "come visit us" in Japanese for my kids. I had told her that the kids love anime and they want to go to Tokyo some time. Very awesome guest service on that part.

Now let me get the negative stuff aired out. Yeah, sorry guys, there will be negative stuff and you know I don't hold back. For starters, the security folks at the T&TC. This isn't about them as a whole, just a few select ones. Attitude like I don't know what. As you all know, you go through the bag check and then some folks get randomly selected to go through the detector. Well, the issue with the detector part is that if you have a stroller, they want you to park it in this taped off square and go through. Harmless enough, right? Well, not with us. You see, you'll be leaving your stroller+baby about 8-10 feet away while you go through. As the security officer, do you know who's in my party? No, you don't. So who's to stop someone from coming up and taking my stroller + baby while I'm messing with the detector? Yeah, sounds pretty out there, draybook, that would never happen. Well, tell that to the thousands of kids who disappear every year.

Anyhow, Amy had talked to guest relations about it as she was not thrilled about having to leave her child to the side like a piece of luggage. They told her that they really shouldn't be asking you to do that and to ask to be wanded next to the stroller if it happened again. t did happen again, and again, and again. The first time it happened again was at the T&TC. Come to think of it, that's the ONLY place we were asked to do it. Not once were we asked to do it at the other 3 parks. Anyhow, this incident was comedic. So, the guy asks her to put the stroller in the square and go through. She tells him what guest relations said and we'll be 100% honest, she was a bit upset when she said it. So, she asked for the supervisor as instructed by GR and he comes over. Let me tell you that this guy had an attitude when he walked up. Mind you, I'm actually over at the other detector line and I was asked to do the same thing. I told that guy no and walked over to where Amy was at. I listened to this supervisor(Jeff) get kind of mouthy with her and he told the one officer to wand her. As she walks over to be wanded, she tells him that she'll be contacting a manager when she gets over to the MK. He said, and I quote, "contact whoever you want". They don't know that I'm with her and as soon as he turns around, I asked him who HIS supervisor is. He tells me the guy's name and I told him, "that's not how you speak to guests/customers". He says ok and that was that.

We got to GR at the MK and Amy went in. I'm standing outside checking my wallet for bail money, just in case. Please note that the last statement was exaggerated sarcasm. Simply noting that she's fuming at this point and she should be. Anyhow, the manager made some calls on the radio and went down there to speak to Jeff and his crew and they gave us 3 FPs each for any ride. That's cool. We're not looking for handouts or anything, we just want less attitude and a better procedure for checking folks with strollers. If I left my stroller unattended 10 feet away off-site, CPS would be on the scene in 5 minutes. And again, a moment is all it takes for a child to be snatched, especially in a place where they don't know who's with who. Anyhow, this was the first of three incidents we had with them. It seems like it was only on the night shift at the T&TC. The second incident was actually funnier that the first.

The second time, the guy I got had a really bad attitude. Billy from Bartow. I told him I wasn't leaving my stroller to the side so he told me to "come over here" to be wanded. I told him I wasn't leaving my stroller and child alone. He tried to get stern and I reaffirmed my original statement. So, he wands me and of course my belt is the only thing that beeps. He asks to see my buckle, which I show. He then tells me to flip it inside out as if I'm hiding a 249SAW inside my $10 WalMart belt buckle. You could tell he was doing this to be petty to try to "show me who's boss". I told him no and that I'm not undressing for his silliness. Then I told him I wanted to speak to his supervisor. That guy came over and I told him the business and took their names and hometowns. I asked if Jeff was on duty and he said yes. I told him they should probably expect another visit from the manager from the other day. I actually made a running joke out of it though. Every night, Billy seemed to be one of the officers closing(standing at the exit). So, when walking past him, I asked if he wanted to check my belt. Yeah, I'm the part of your body that emits feces, but somebody has to be. I don't like being treated differently than others and I especially don't liked being singled out. Sorry if you feel otherwise. But to me, customer service is customer service. I handle customer service for a Fortune 500 medical supply company. If I treated our customers the way these few officers spoke and treated guests, I'd be looking for a new job by the end of that same day.

On to another gripe, traffic. To borrow from Tim Tracker, HOLY MACARONI. Leaving DHS is a NIGHTMARE at closing. We were parked towards the very back of the music rows, I think it was. We sat there for 10 minutes and didn't move an inch. We were right where the cones turn into concrete barriers. Just as I was about to hop out and move some cones so we could merge with the two outgoing lanes, the passenger in the car in front of us had the same idea. Within 30 seconds, we were out and about. Other than that, it wasn't too bad.

The crowds. Man, was it busy. However, we didn't really get into the parks until 5pm or so every day. We enjoyed sleeping in. At the MK, it really clears out right after HEA.

Well, the babies are up now so I'll have to continue this later. Thanks for following along, folks!

First of all, I'm happy to hear that you figured out where the overcharge was, and got refunded. Also happy to hear about some nice customer service there as well.

I'm trying to figure out the location (in relation to the security metal detector) of the squared off area where the strollers must be kept (with an infant inside--unattended). Because I wasn't there to see this, I'd assume that they would, at least, put the stroller area after where people would go through the metal detector--and they'd see it AHEAD of them as they walked through. (That way, they could keep moving ahead while keeping an eye on the baby in the stroller.) But it doesn't sound like that, it almost sounded like it was behind you, when you went through the detector? Don't blame you and your wife for being upset.

The taped off squares are to the left of the metal detectors. Many people don't see them. We generally wait for each other to come through the bag check and if one of us isn't screened for the detector, that one will stay with the stroller.

Alright, finally got some free time to add some more thoughts and pictures.

I wanted to take a moment to highlight the many positive experiences we had. First was a security officer named Vickie from St. Augustine. She closed the MK several nights during our trip and Chris made a friend in her. The first night was when I was at GR dealing with the overcharge issue. Amy said that he pretty much talked and played with her the whole time. She was awesome and I made sure to let wdwguestrelations know that. Also, the CM that I spoke to at MK GR about the overcharge was awesome. She was from Japan and she was very friendly! Not only did she fix the issue, she wrote on some celebration buttons for our kids to come visit Japan, but she wrote it in Japanese. Very nice touch! There were numerous others and I made sure to let guest relations know in my emails. I am one of the first people to voice my concerns about negative experiences but I'm also the first one to recognize excellent service and those who provide it.

Anyhow, I wanted to start off with this picture first, so you guys could see how long Christopher's hair was when we had it cut at the Harmony Barber Shop. I didn't necessarily take a photo of the after part when his hair had dried because by that time it was looking like Lord Farquaad and my wife was already upset about it enough. Trust me, the lady butchered it. Anyhow, look at this cutie and enjoy some more random photos. I'll add some more tonight or tomorrow.

I just wanted to say that I know how you feel about getting singled out by security. First of all, I agree with the security measures that are taken at the airports and parks to try to stop terrorism. But, right after 9/11, I was in the security line to board a flight. I was near the end of the line, and the security officer pulled me out of line for random checking. They went overboard with everything and I felt like a criminal by the end. They had to hold up the plane for me to get finished. At that time, everyone was nervous about flying, and I got a lot of anxious looks by people already on the plane. I think they did this to make a point that they were PC, and would check out the old lady too.

I was embarrassed to board the plane last and to hold the plane up because of this. I think they were trying to go overboard showing that they would do these checks "randomly". Like I said, I am completely in agreement with the security measures that are taken to keep us safe, but I think that because it was so close to 9/11 that a lot of extra was being done just to show they were doing it. I don't know.
So, I know what it's like to feel singled out for whatever reason. I think the way the TTC handled you and the stroller was definitely NOT right, and I would have been right there with your wife about it.
Glad to hear the good things that happened too.
thanks for your report

I don't remember if I posted or even made a TR for our trip back in September of 2014, but it was our first time flying and the TSA at MCO reaaaaaally ticked me off. Ashley(dd) was 15 at the time and while Amy and I were going through the scanners, they took her about 150 feet away for a swab and pat down. Without our knowledge or consent and without her consent. I was beyond ticked and I even filed an official complaint and request for the video.

Yep, they dont' seem to be consistent, but they were really nervous after 9/11! That would tick me off too.
