The Black Hole...

I like this movie a lot.
When i bought a used Dvd of it some months ago, i was not expecting it to be a good as it was.
I had seen it upon original release in the late 70s, but remembered little about it.
Recently i went on a old-school Disney live action film exploration...and picked it up cheap second hand.

I thought it was pretty decent with some cool effects that still hold up after all these years.
Sure there are some 'cheesy' moments...but overall i thought it was worth the time viewing.

The molten meteor that smashes though the Cygnus towards the films climax is impressive.
I wonder if Spielberg or Lucas saw this and it inspired them to create the famous 'rolling boulder' scene from 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'..?
It crosses my mind every time i see it....and it was a good two year before 'Raiders' came out.

Of course most remember this movie for the trippy ending ( or non-ending..? ).
A interesting way to close a film.

Just a follow-up about this thread...

I've come to find out that Amazon (and I believe itunes) have HD versions of The Black Hole available for streaming/purchase.

I went ahead and purchased the one from Amazon and it looks great! It is a considerable upgrade from the DVD version but obviously not quite as good as what a restored/remastered blu-ray would look like. However, I am extremely happy to be able to watch this in HD and for me it was worth the purchase. I'd still double-dip if a great blu-ray version came along though, but this will keep me content in the meantime.

I was reading a thread on IMDB about how you would cast this movie today, here are some the of the suggestions I liked....

- Hans Reinhardt - Christoph Waltz
- Alex Durant - Stellan Skarsgård
- Captain Dan Holland - Liam Neeson
- Lt Charles Pizer - Joseph Gordon-Levitt
- Harry Booth - Paul Giamatti (I also think it would be cool to see Robert Forster back for this role)

Not sure who I would like to see as Kate.

It's one of those movies that I just am desperate to love, but I just can't. I saw it when it was released and recently streamed it. Same deal. Just ok for me. The 2nd half is pretty exciting tho.

Great soundtrack, boring movie.
I find it astounding that something as old-fashioned as The Black Hole came out after Alien and Star Wars.

Just read that Yvette Mimieux, who started in Black Hole, passed away. I always liked this movie, although I will admit that the ending was not great.

Disney has some IPs they could easily reboot and use. Can you imagine the merch they could sell with a Maximillion/drone hybrid flying robot?
