Trip Report The better late than never Princess Half Marathon too many family members trip report

I have started typing many many trip reports in the past, and none of them have made it here to be posted because I have serious time management issues.

But here is hoping the 4th (5th??) time is a charm.

A little background info on this particular mini-trip…

A few years back I made a promise to myself that I would run the Princess Half Marathon, never having run more than a mile at one time in my life. A year came and went and I was no closer to accomplishing that goal. I happened to share this crazy idea with my future sister-in-law who actually was a runner, and she was totally on board. So we signed up for the 2014 Princess and there was no backing out.

So who did we manage to get to tag along? This crazy trip wound up including a cast of myself, my fiancé, his sister, mom and dad, my mom, my step-dad and my dad. Talk about a mixed family vacation eh?

Mike and I after I ran the Philly Half Marathon in Novemeber ( I wanted to have one under my belt before the Princess!)

When we planned the trip, I was hoping we would go for a week , but a little something called an ENGAGEMENT managed to change our plans. We needed to save money (and PTO) for wedding/honeymoon, so what was originally supposed to be a relaxed vacation turned into an extended weekend trip.

Okay Kait, let’s get on with it already!

Friday, February 21st

I woke up bright and early around 5am to take my mom and step-dad to the airport. Why we didn’t just take this early flight with them, I will never know. But ours was scheduled to leave later around 1pm. When we were planning the trip I was so worried about snow delaying our departure…. It would turn out I was super worried about the wrong thing! There was a huge line of thunderstorms and severe weather making its way across the country that day, and this would come to impact our travel greatly.

Prior to leaving for the airport, we got word our flight was about an hour delayed. We decided to get to the airport at our original time anyway, just in case it got moved back up.

What a mess! I’ve never seen a southwest check-in line so long and so slow in my life. I know PHL has a bad reputation, but we’ve really been so lucky previously. Thankfully we wound up in line with some very nice ladies who were also gearing up to run the race, so I had someone to talk to and get some of my pre-race jitters out.

To make a long, horrible, travel story short, we waited in this check-in line for 2 and a half hours. Yes, you read this correctly, 2 and a half. Our flight was now 3-4 hours delayed and the airport was a mess.

Passing the time…

We had dinner reservations at Artist Point, so I called to push them back to 9pm and eventually, I think around 5pm, we were in the air.

Once up above the clouds it was beautiful!

I apologize in advance for the craptastic pictures I took this trip. I normally use my DSLR a lot and take some really nice shots. I think the race had me all in a tizzy, so there are a lot of iPhone shots this time.

We landed at MCO and raced down to the magical express.

Love this sign.

We waited all of 2 seconds to board a bus and we were on our way to….

POP CENTURY!

I’ve stayed here before with my mom, but this was everyone else’s first time at this resort. I’m more of a moderate girl myself, but for a short trip on a budget this wound up being the perfect spot. But I digress.

It was getting late (but the actual time escapes my memory) and I knew we weren’t going to make it to the Wilderness Lodge if we took the bus to MK and then the boat. So taxi it was. We had our clothes in our carry-ons so we changed in the lobby at Pop. My mom and step-dad took our things for us and off we went!

Mike (fiancé) had never been to the wilderness lodge before, so we took a stroll around before we checked in to Artist Point.

having fun with hats..

It just felt so good to be back on Disney ground. Mind you, I’d been here in October for a weeklong trip with my dad, and also in August for a quick trip while I was speaking at a conference. 3 trips in a short span of time is not normal for me, so I was feeling pretty lucky!

We eventually checked in and were seated in the center of the dining room. We had read so-so reports of Artist Point, but the menu was up our alley so we really wanted to give it a try. It was pretty late, so the restaurant was fairly empty. You’d think this would mean we’d get extra attentive service, and we did, mostly.

I can’t believe I didn’t take any food pictures. I told you, I was all in a tizzy about this race.
I got the cheese plate appetizer and Mike got the pork belly I believe. We were both impressed and enjoyed them. What I did not enjoy, was my entrée being brought to me before I was done my appetizer. This really shouldn’t happen. I’m going to sound like a major foodie snob right here, but at a signature (read: expensive) restaurant, the timing of my meal should not be an issue. Regardless, they apologized and it wasn’t a big deal.

I got the cedar plank salmon because I wanted to try the “signature” dish of the restaurant. It was delicious and cooked perfectly. I really forget what it was served with but I remember I wasn’t a fan. Mike got some crazy meat sampler plate and there were things that he liked more than others. Man – I am terrible at this! I should NOT be a food blogger.

Regardless, we had a really nice evening and it was great to relax and spend some time together after a crazy travel day!

We grabbed a cab back to Pop and met up with my dad, who we were sharing a room with. We were pretty close to my mom and step-dad, but not at all close to Mike’s family. I was a little annoyed considering we had made the reservations as a group so we could be near each other, but wound up not being a very big deal.

The obligatory towel picture

We made plans with Mike’s sister, whom I was running the race with, to head to the expo the next morning and then we called it a night.

Coming up…..
Day 2 – expo and exploring WDW outside of the parks.

Saturday February 22nd

Holy cow. I told you we were sharing a room with my dad. Man, does that guy snore. I had no clue. It was a rough night, but sharing rooms was a good money saving option for us because of said upcoming nuptials.

We woke up around 7:30 probably as we were meeting Mike’s sister and parents to head to the expo around 8:30. Here is something you should know about my lovely fiancé and his family; they are not so good at being on time. Ever. For anything. For any reason. sigh.

Around 8:15 they told us they were going to have breakfast….:banghead:

Needless to say a mild argument ensued between Mike and his family regarding our departure time. And a short while later we were meeting them near the buses.

I have to say, the event buses worked well for us all weekend. I never felt like we waited too long at all.

Off to the expo!!

Obligatory picture in front of the sign.

Mike and his sister.

Got some free greek yogurt here which was a lovely breakfast since we had skipped…..

We got our bibs and then headed to get our shirts.

Not even sure why I tried to get a decent picture in that lighting. Ugh.

I know I was at the expo the last day, but man the official merch was really picked over. Do they really have that hard of a time stocking properly? I got a shirt anyway but I was slightly disappointed.

We walked around for a bit but didn’t really buy anything else. Then we headed back to POP.

Mike’s family decided to spend the rest of the day in Epcot. They aren’t seasoned WDWers like my family, and it wasn’t a long trip, so they really wanted to get some solid park time in. I, on the other hand, knew I couldn’t tour for a day and then run a half marathon the next day. So I spent the day with my family.

I sent Mike on his way to Epcot to be the amazing Disney tourist I had trained him over the last few years to be.

I found my mom, my step-dad and my dad by the computer pool. We hung out for a bit and then decided to find a Target to get some water, beer, snacks and other things.

After our excursion we went minigolfing! This is something we don’t usually take the time to do in WDW, but I’m glad we did.

It was a bit rainy, but we still had a good time.

And I won, as usual!

It was late afternoon at this point and my nerves were starting to kick in. Or maybe that was just my growling stomach. I didn’t want any fast food from POP, and really had a hankering for some Captain Cooks, so to the Poly we went!

I don’t know what I was thinking, but I honestly thought we could park at the poly just to eat at Captain Cooks. Nope. So back out to the TTC parking lots we went. I really tried to tell my family to just head back to Pop, but everyone seemed determined to get me what I originally wanted. They kept saying we had all the time in the world, and that was true. So we parked, took the tram, and then walked over to the Poly.

I think I got some pineapple/Hawaiian chicken sammie. The most important part of my meal was obviously…..

Yum! Hit the spot! And no dairy, which tends to upset my stomach. That’s a big no no the day before a race!

We headed back “home” after dinner. I touched base with Mike to see what that crew was up to. Sounded like they had a long day and were heading back soon.

My mom, step-dad and dad (yes, my family is that awesome that everyone hangs out!) decided to hang out in my moms room and have a few drinks. I went to back to the room, showered and packed up my stuff for the next morning.

Wow that’s an early wake up call.

At some point my dad and mike made their way back to the room. I had trouble falling asleep. And then the snoring started. I don’t even think snoring is the right word. Loudest. Noise. Ever. The more stressed I got about NOT falling asleep, the harder it was to fall asleep. I eventually did, at some point past 10 or 11.

Sunday, February 23rd

Might be the earliest I have ever gotten up for anything. Ever. But I wasn’t tired. I knew it was adrenaline and hoped it would last.

I got ready quietly so I wouldn’t wake up Mike or my dad. I grabbed all my things and met up with Mike’s sister at the bus stop. I attempted to eat my luna bar on the bus. I could barely choke it down. I was so nervous. I really don’t know why, but I always get like this before races.

We made our way to what I assumed was the corral area but soon discovered I was wrong.

Mike’s sister and I stretched out, took some pictures and just enjoyed looking at everyone else’s costumes! There are some super creative people out there!

I “dressed up” as Ariel, and Mike’s sister as Belle.

I’m impressed at some of these costumes people wear. I couldn’t run with wigs and long pants and all other types of stuff on me. But kudos to you who can because you look fabulous!

After a while, we started off for the corrals. I had read this was quite a hike but it was really much farther than I expected.

Mike’s sister and I eventually split off, as she was in a corral ahead of me. This was when I really started to get nervous. I’m a slow runner. As in possibly the slowest runner ever. I started this adventure of running half marathons with very low expectations and just being able to complete them is accomplishment enough for me.

I had really struggled to train for this race. The weather here in the Northeast all winter was ridiculous, to say the least. Besides freezing, there was just ice and snow covering everything for so long. It made training much more challenging, and I don’t think I ever got in a more than 9 mile long run. For my last half marathon I got in much further distances than that. I was really worried about being swept, most of all, even though I average a 12 minute mile. I think being a few corrals up from the last was a saving grace for me in the end..

Anyway, after what seemed like forever, the first corral was off. Eventually my corral started creeping closer and closer to the start.

Before I knew it, there I was!! Man my heart was pumping.

And then, I was off!

The first mile really flew by. Before I knew it we were on world drive. I had to remind myself to slow down a bit and pace myself or I’d be in trouble later.

Next thing I remember is cruising past the pirate ship. I really had not planned on stopping for any pictures, and after seeing the line I’m glad I stuck with that plan. Like I said, super slow runner here, no time for photo ops!

I had planned on taking pictures of each mile marker – nope that didn’t happen! But I remembered to get a few of this beauty…

This one on of the highlights of the run for me. What a cool thing to say I've done, ran under that sign.

I remember running over the 5k mat and waiting on my text message to tell me my first split. But it didn’t come. This is when I cursed myself for not keeping my own time like I did when I ran the Philly half. That feeling of not knowing, or trying to do the math of when did I start minus the time now etc etc. I eventually gave up and just enjoyed myself.

I next ran past the villians, which I did not get a picture of unfortunately. This is one place I would have loved to stop but I didn’t because….

I knew these guys were coming up!

My fiancé, my family and his family waiting to cheer me on! I know Mike’s sister had probably run past them a long time ago, so I was thankful they waited to see me.

Here they are setting up shop earlier in the morning (because of course I didn't get a picture of them as I ran by!). I am getting welled up a bit writing this because I truly am so lucky to have so many supportive people in my life. I remember texting my mom a few days after our trip and saying how thankful I was she came to cheer me on and her reply was something along the lines of how wonderful it is to watch your children reach their goals. Oh mom, I hope I’m as amazing as you someday.

Back on track Kait…

I gave some kisses and hugs and I was on my way. The drummers at the TTC were pretty cool. I enjoyed the variety of race entertainment.

I think this is about where mile 5 was… but regardless here is my mile 5 picture!

I got a new burst of energy because I knew the Magic Kingdom was coming up. There were a few short hills here but I don’t remember them wiping me out too much. I was too excited!

I should take this time to mention, because my pictures reminded me, of how crazy foggy it was this morning! It ended up being a blessing, because later when the sun came out it was HOT! This was another downside to training for a winter race in Pennsylvania that took place in Florida. I really couldn’t have prepared myself for the warm humid weather after training in super cold weather. I did some runs on the treadmill inside, but it just isn’t the same. Needless to say, the foggy moisture kept my skin wet and the sun off my face, so I was happy.

Soon, I saw this amazing mountain in my view! I had never been back on this access road before and it was pretty darn cool. I was struggling to get my bearings, and eventually realized we were coming up along side of Main Street, USA!

It really started to hit me here; where I was, what I was doing, and how awesome it was!

I took my headphones off so I could really enjoy the sounds of cheering and of course the Main Street music!

I knew it was going to be crowded and difficult to run in this area, and I was correct. I kept a slow run and eventually just walked quickly.

This. Was. Awesome!

Running (or, you know, fast walking) down Main Street towards Cinderella Castle while tons of people cheered you on is pretty indescribable.

So much fog!

We ran towards tomorrow land, and then looped back up towards the teacups.

Love this guys shirt!

There were so many cast members and characters cheering us on. And the music. Oh my the music. I’m really a sucker for WDW area music. It’s what I listen to in the car ride home after a long day, or when I need a pick me up, or just want to feel like I’m at my favorite place. It was really amazing getting to hear it while running through the park.

We came up through tomorrowland and I caught a glimpse of this dapper mouse! The line was soooo long. So I kept moving.

My mom’s favorite ride.

Another massive congestion area, but awesome to run through! They were playing the Rocky Theme too, when I was running through. Nice Philly nod right there :)

There was a photo op in front of the castle, but I kept going on my way, starting to get worried about my time. I might have failed to mention but I stopped to walk a few times in the last few miles. I had promised myself my only goal was just to finish, but here I was, determined to beat my previous half marathon time by even a second. Way to set unrealistic expectations in the middle of the race, Kait!

We made our way across the bride and into Liberty Square.

I took this picture, and sent it off to my family with the caption “is it time for a nap yet?”. Wish I could have snuck in there for a quick on…. But on I went.

I kept running through frontierland and managed to get another mile marker! I think that’s 2 now? Nice job with the picture documenting Kait…

We exited the park along side of Splash Mountain and I was sad to see the park go. I knew it was going to be hard to keep my adrenaline going. We ran through some backstage areas where there was some parade floats and other things but I really don’t remember. I was focused on using my Find my Friends App which was perfect for finding my family. I saw that Mike’s sister was now way, way, way ahead of me. Like 3 miles ahead of me. And I could see my family was waiting for me on the other side of the Poly.

I trucked on for a bit, thinking I wasn’t that far from them, but started to peter out a bit. I think I walked a few minutes in here, then ran, then walked etc. Also pretty sure I maybe ran over another mat somewhere around here. And actually did get the text update this time. It's kind of all a blur.

This was, if I remember correctly, one of the most congested parts of the race. I really wish I had constructive criticism for RunDisney on how to make this better, but I really don’t. It’s literally a one lane width street and you’ve got 10’s of thousands of runners. I know the common complaint is over-selling the races, but I don’t know if that would make all that much of a difference. Then there are the “brady bunches” of people who are walking about 5 people wide across the road. The few times I did end up running, I think I ran on the grass. Just when I thought I couldn’t take much more, it would open up. And then merge down again. It was rough.

I really was starting to lose steam here, but knew my family was coming up. Got a text from my mom that they were on the right side of the road, and Mike and his family were on the left.

These are pictures Mike's family took, because clearly I was pooped and past the point of picture taking at this time hahaha!

They were a sight for sore eyes.

Love my "Go Kaits" sign :)

I took a few shot blocks (mm margarita flavor!) from my mom. Gave them hugs, and then ran to the other side of the street to give my in-laws and hubby-to-be a hug. I may or may not have started to well up here. But I think I held back the tears. Confession. I’m a big crier. Drop of a dime, crier. I think I cried ever time I saw a friend of family member along the race course when I ran in the Philly half in November. And I sure a heck sobbed like a baby when I was finally done and got the biggest hug ever from Mike (see picture at top of trip report). But I am proud to say I made it through this race without all out crying. Just a few “moments” if you will.

I left them and moved on to mile 8….

DO IT! No really - if I can do it, anyone can! It was such a great experience. And always good to have an excuse for more WDW time, am I right??

I hear ya....if you are not too exhausted to enjoye the parks after the race :) What was your overall time? I wold want to be sure I could keep a good pace.. although it sounds like you had a few spots where it was congested so it forced you to slow down a bit.
