My GF is on Amazon.com ordering a few DVD's. We need about 25 more dollars worth of stuff for us get free shipping. I was wondering what everyone thought would be the best WDW Book/C.D. to get? Behind the scene's, Trivia, Imagineering, etc..

Thanks,
-:)

Walt Disney World Trivia books by Lou Mongello and the Hidden Mickey Field Guides by Steven Barrett are both fun reading. The Hidden Mickey books are usually really thin and fit in a small bag or pocket in case you'd like to bring them into the park to hunt for Mickeys. :lookaroun

I would recommend either of the The Imagineering Field Guide books. There is currently one for the Magic Kingdom and one for EPCOT. I personally would say the MK one is better but thats just me! Would recommend them both though. Also a good size for taking to the parks with you if you desire.

I really enjoy Since The World Began. I think it's the best official WDW history book the company has released.

The Imagineering Field Guides are also nice, but suffer a little from the amount of corporate spin they include.

If you like art and design both "Building a Dream" and "Designing Disney's Theme Parks" look at the world from an architectural standpoint. They both have great pictures and illustrations, many of which I've never seen in print before, but the text is overly critical of Disney, so wearers of rose-colored glasses beware! :)

Jason Surrell's Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean books are also great must-have books for fans of those specific attractions.

The Walt Disney Imagineering book is also pretty nice. I have the older hardcover version, but it's available again in softcover and it's a pretty good look at WDW, but again a little heavy on corporate spin.

One of my favorite books is Walt Disney's EPCOT - Creating the New World of Tomorrow. Published in 1982, it shows in detail EPCOT in its most early stages. Be aware that there are two versions of this book, one just over 100 pages and another almost 300 pages. Only the longer one is really worth the time and money to track down, but both appear on eBay pretty frequently.

All of the Disney World souvenir picture book have a strong emphasis on the present, with little information on history. If you're interested in WDW history try to track down the older versions. Walt Disney World: The First Decade is a nice look at pre-EPCOT Walt Disney World. It's still fluff, but at least it's vintage fluff. :)

And finally, probably my favorite book is Disneyland - The Nickel Tour. It's not about WDW, but there has been NO better book on Disneyland theme park history, hands down. I wish ALL of Disney's books followed the lead this book set, and it's a real shame they have only reprinted it once. THIS is the kind of book that needs to stay in print.

I really like all of the above but for some deeper reading:

- Mouse Tales and More Mouse Tales by Koenig...awesome behind the scenes
- Vinyl Leaves - a socio-politico-economic look at WDW. If you like this stuff, it's fascinating albeit realistic...so expect some bashing

The Imagineering Guides are fun...the beginning of the Epcot one is fascinating, concerning the design and build phases

Mini-Mickey (Sehlinger's team) is a good behind-the-scenes read and Hidden Mickeys is fun (esp cuz the Columbia House Mickey was one of my finds!)

Has anyone read "Down and out in the Magic Kingdom" ? I started to read that and it was totally not what I expected... I was wondering if it gets better, or if it continues to discuss drugs and random stuff?

Down and Out is a fantastic book - a great look at the future.

And the currency? Well, just think of how MySpace works and it's kind of scary.

I've read it three times and loved it. Then again, reading it as a Disney book is like reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas if you're interested in LV, albeit even reading F&L in LV makes one feel kinda stoned (no drugs that I can recall in Down and Out).

In the beginning of Down and Out, they start talking about smoking their crack pipe, etc. The first and second chapter didn't seem too disney-related.
