Anyone done the tour that takes you behind the scenes and underneath the MK?

I think it looks quite cool... let me know if any of you have done it and wether it was worth it or not! :slurp:

It is really cool...For the first 30 minutes. Its called Keys to the Kingdom. They take you, well they took me, in the Utilidors (Underneath MK), behind the scenes at MGM, behind the scenes at MK, where they throw all the garbage (which was sort of gross), and to the float garages (really interesting). We also went back somewhere where they house costumes and uniforms, and that was pretty much it. The downside is that you walk for the whole six hours, minus lunch; You can't take pictures, if you are caught, they take your film, no matter what is on it; You are asked to be quiet, and questions to a minimum; and you HAVE to stay in a really tight group at all times. You feel like a kindergartener by the end of the tour, as you are repremanded and told "don't sit/touch/do/look/walk by that" all afternoon. I recommend it, but I would never do it again.

You have to buy a Park Hopper pass, because they make you pay the admission to whatever parks you visit. So thats a little more than a hundred I think. But I have an annual pass, so I didn't have to pay admission, so it was only about a hundred and something for me.

We did the "Behind the Magic" tour back in September. We read many reviews, but had the see it for ourselves. In short, it was worth every penny. Period. The tour guide was knowledgeable, and didn't pull any punches. All of the questions were answered frankly, and if he didn't know the answer, he said so, and then tried to find the answer. Be sure to participate, ask lots of questions and stay close to the guide.
Two pieces of advice.
1) Be ready to walk a lot.
2) At the lunch (yes it's a very nice lunch) be sure to try to sit at the same table as your guide. We did, and got to ask a lot more questions and learned a lot that the other folks in our group didn't.

Have a GREAT time!!

I took the Backstage tour a few years ago, it was 7 hours, lunch included, no park pass required. It was great, went behind the scenes at MK, all through the utilidor, into the attraction and parade control room, backstage at the American Pavillion and Living Seas, through the animation studios, the maintenence shops, and much more. We were bused around, had a great tour guide, I asked lots of questions and he invited them. Also talked to various other employees we encountered at the stops. The guide was a WDW training instructor and knew everything. No pictures of course.

We did some painting and drawing with a senior animator at MGM. Had a great lunch at Mama Rosa's, one of the highlight's of the day. One of the MGM street characters came in and she did this bit as an obnoxious uninvited relative of the tour guide who just dropped in to grab a free lunch, he called her Aunt Helen. She had all of us fooled for a few minutes then we played along. She was a wonderful character. After lunch she boarded the bus with us and gave a brief talk about the work life of a WDW character actor. Great stuff. Ended the day with the utilidor tour and came up through a secret entrance on main street just in time to see the parade.

I could go on but safe to say it was well worth it. Cost $200, I probably won't do it again but glad I did it once. Not a kid thing for sure.

I'll throw in my $.02 here.

We did the tour in October of last year as well.

Tour started in Epcot, we went behind the scenes at the American Pavilion and at Body Wars. Body Wars was cool to see from the outside with the lights on. That ride really moves alot more than people think it does.

Then over to MGM where we had lunch at Mama Rosa's. Like other said, this was a good meal. I know my wife has told me that we need to add this one to our restaurant list next time we visit. Then on to the workshops. Wood, metal, robotics, costumes, uniforms. We got to see how Disney builds all this stuff, and to walk the halls where all the creative staff works. The robotics stuff was very cool. We also toured the Christmas warehouse were they were gearing up to decorate all the parks and the two ships.

Then over to MK. Did the Utilidor, watched the 3:00 parade, a walk up main street, then over to where the parade ends and we got to see the place were they reherse for the parades and all the floats.

Then we were taken back to Epcot, and it ended.

It's a really long day (7 hours), so ready your feet for some pavment pounding. They do bus you around, but you're still on your feet most of the day. Everyone should do this one at least once, but once was enough for us, we wont do do it again. Thes cost was $200, but I could use my DC to get a discount.

As for booking, we just booked through Disney, the same as the room. Actually, that's wrong, we stayed at AKL concierge, and they booked it for us. But the year before, we did our own bookings through Disney, and we just booked through them.

I would think that backstage they would shuttle you around in a golf cart or something. All that walking seems unnecessary for the price. Oh well... such is Disney! :D

That would have been nice! My feet were killing me after that day. I have a bad ankle to begin with, and even though I wore my brace that day, it still took a day to recover. I was like some 50's movie monster, dragging my foot behind me. :zipit:
