We all knew THE AVENGERS was going to open huge, but now we know how huge it is going to be.

Based on a press release from MovieTickets.com, THE AVENGERS is tracking at one and a half times the pre-sales of IRON MAN, IRON MAN 2, THOR, and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER combined (at the same point in the sales cycle).

From the press release: MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS is selling 3,995% more tickets than CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER at the same point in the sales cycle.

MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS is selling 1,034% more tickets than THOR at the same point in the sales cycle.

MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS is selling 114% more tickets than IRON MAN 2 at the same point in the sales cycle.

MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS is selling 1,406% more tickets than IRON MAN at the same point in the sales cycle.

56% of pre-sales for MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS are from fans wanting to see the film in 3D. Nearly 37% of pre-sales for MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS are from moviegoers buying tickets to see the film in IMAX 3D.

What this tells us is that the film is going to open somewhere in the range of 160-200 million, or more. That is a very, very nice opening weekend for a movie and one hell of a way to kick the summer movie season off. There will likely be a drop off in week two, but those numbers will cement sequels to both THE AVENGERS as well as the likely Black Widow/Hawkeye spin-off.

Do you already have your tickets purchased for THE AVENGERS opening May 4th?

Yes. :) And guarding them with my life. I have three different sets for showings bought for me and my son. A midnight 3D showing, one for the next day in 3D, and then another set for IMAX. SWEET! :sohappy::sohappy:

I think if you're getting tickets for opening night or even the day after, you'll want to be safe and get them online ahead of time just in case.

Went to see the movie for the fourth....yes fourth....time today as we have been introducing most of the character movies to them over the last few weeks. Was surprised to find that it was a sell out. Yes, a smaller theater in the complex, but sold out none the less.

While the pre-sales were impressive for The Avengers, at last word they are lagging Batman. Can't say I am suprised in the least.

We were told by some "experts" here that this version would not surpass chapter 2 because it would not have the "Heath Ledger" effect. I of course know that this had little to nothing to do with the success the franchise has enjoyed. This version of Batman resonates with audiences for an entirely different reason.

We saw the preview again for the upcoming Batman, and again, I have a hard time getting excited for it. I will definitely go see it, but Im not excited to go see it, say the same excitement as for the upcoming Hobbit.

Were you excited about the previous Batman films? Movie appreciation is still heavily tied to personal preferences.

I was excited about the first one because it was a reboot of the franchise. I enjoyed the second one more so for how the Joker was portrayed more than anything else.

Thanks. Glad to see Im not one of the masses.

You and me both! But in this case the masses have it right. If they get the story right this could easily be my favorite trilogy ever. Surpassing original Star Wars.

Remember, it all started with a bat.

My favorite trilogy, Lord of the Rings. I said at the end of Return of the King and I have said it countless times since, I don't think I will live to see a better told story on screen.

My impression... the gen pop does not have the association with the main villain - so it's hard for them to get excited about the film. But with the first film.. people didn't think so much of it either as 'whats going to be different' - and Nolan delivered. The second film.. they delivered again. I have faith that the subject and the direction will lead to a good movie again. I don't need a trailer.. I want to see Nolan's work period.
