Anyone ever heard of an apartment in the castle? Is this real or just a rumor? Do any of the behind the scenes tours go here?

It is there. Its just rarely used for anything. I believe though its used to store items for Tinkerbell.

For those of you who are like "What are you talkin about", when MK was being built, Walts plans (So its said) were to move his family into the room. Obviously this never happened.

It was briefly used by telephone operators during the first few years of the park. I believe it is currently empty.

That "apartment" was actually supposed to be Walt's office when he came to visit Florida. It is definitely NOT a dressing room, the dressing room is in one of the spires that Tinkerbell jumps out of for her flight. No behind-the-scenes tours will never go up there either since the elevator to get there is VERY small and cramped (it can fit a MAX of 4 people uncomfortably).

I may be mistaken, but I believe the apartment was used briefly for Disney World Operators. I think it is now the area where the Cinderella's Royal Table restaurant is located.

Cinderella Castle

http://www.hiddenmickeys.org/WDW/MagicKingdom/Secrets/FL/Castle.html

There is a room upstairs in Cinderella Castle. Actually, it is more like an apartment. Walt was going to use this not as a hotel room but as an apartment for his family. This idea was abandoned with the apartment half finished. Unfortunately, Walt never saw the opening of Walt Disney World and this apartment has never been used.

Although it may have been his idea, the apartment in the castle was not for Walt. He died in December 1966, well before the ground breaking of the Magic Kingdom (which opened in October 1971). I've heard reports it was for Roy's family, but can't confirm.
UPDATE: David Poole 09 JUL 99
The apartment that had been built for Walt is now used as a dressing room for the people from Entertainment (for example, the "Mayor's" costume is kept there). The stairs outside the castle, on the Fantasyland side go up to the second level. You would end up on next to the windows for Cinderella's Royal Table. There is a walkway that goes all the way around the castle on this level. The stairs do not take you all the way to the top... There are two elevators in the castle (Not including a dumbwaiter). The one in the lobby of the Castle, which only goes up the the second floor (for use by guests to the restaurant) and the one that is for Cast Member's ONLY. This one goes from the tunnels, to the "2nd" floor (the walkway through the Castle, on the opposite side from the mural. There is a locked door in front of it, so guests can't get into it.) and then the upper kitchen of the restaurant, and finally it stops on the floor by the apartment/dressing room. It is a VERY small elevator. Watch the people from entertainment after a show (like Disneymania) and see how hard they have to squeeze to get in there. (Costumed characters enter a dressing room nearby, and get out of costume BEFORE trying to use the elevator.) The restaurant itself has two kitchens. One on the level with the tunnels, where food is mass prepared, and one on the level with the restaurant, where finishing touches are done. The elevators and dumbwaiters are used often, because there are a lot of stairs to climb.

Apartment: The area located just above Cinderella's Royal Table restaurant inside the castle was originally intended to serve as an apartment for Roy Disney Sr. and his family while staying at the WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort. With the advent of Roy's death in 1971, the apartment was never built. Instead this area first served as the operations unit for Vista United Telecommunications (WALT DISNEY WORLD® switchboard operators). At the present time, it serves as the dressing rooms for the entertainers performing in the shows at the Castle Forecourt Stage.

Thanks everyone. Lots of good information. This apartment is something I would love to see. Guess that will never happen though. Can you imagine actually staying there? Talk about location, location, location.

I think someone with the right pull should finish out the construction of this apartment, decorate it and furnish it to the highest standards of luxury, then rent it out for about $2000.00 per night, with all the monies going to some kind of charity like Give Kids the World or something. I bet the waiting list would be years long even at a crazy price. No one would tolerate the castle being a regular place for lodging, but something special like this that would benefit children, now that would be magical.

Oh well, just fanciful thinking.

Hm. Maybe they'll use it in a commerical for the AP push they're having.

Ill explain, that family that they use could go up there, using that as their room (Since itll work with the whole "You'll think you own the place"). Then someone (me) would run up there and lock them perminatly in that room!

In case you havent figured it out, I hate that commerical. The FCC should look at that and go "NO".

I couldn't find anything in the Imagineering Book, but this is from Since The World Began dated 1996. "Space for an apartment for the Disney family was designed and built inside the castle's upper floors, but it has never been completed or used." Keep in mind things probably have changed since this book was written and I'm only posting what I read.
I do know Walt had an apartment above the fire station, I believe, in Disneyland that he did use and is still as he left it. I have seen video of it on the Travel Channel. If you ever visit Disneyland take notice to the lamp in the window. It is always on to remind you that Walt is always home.

No. No. No. Haven't you guys been paying attention to these boards? That room is currently being used as the control room for the aiming and launching of the infamous ICBM's (aka castle spires) at Cuba!

The apartment's current state!

The apartment is in fact currently used as a dressing room for performers in the castle show. Sorry Nick, whoever told u that there was another smaller dressing room was not entirely accurate. Tink uses this area as well as the smaller are for preperation, but the apartment is primarily used for the castle shows- just like MKT said. Its a nice little space, not that big though. They get cable. I don't foresee the apt. beign used as a hotel room anytime soon b/c a dressing room is something that is contractually obligated. And there really isn't that much space to add one for the performers. Besides, i don't think u would really want to stay in the penthouse any way. Its not like it has a greatview or anything. Its really just sort of a backstage thing.

Actually the room has no view. All of the windows are made so light comes in but no one on the outside can see light or shaddows. Also, the windows are in scale with the castle so the windows up there must be like the size of your head.

The room was supposed to be for Walt, and his family. But that never happend. Then was used for the Disney Telephone Operator's for a couple of years. But now is used for storage, and peformers.
