Welcome to the Alternate History Timeline: What if Epcot was still great in this blog I will create an Alternate History timeline of Epcot where the park gets updated and made even greater then it was on opening day this happens because of the successful record breaking opening of Euro Disneyland in 1992, Frank wells continuing as President of Disney into the 2000's, The Strong opening year of Epcot in 1982, The Millennium celebration and the emergence of SC-FI and Animated IP's that will be used in the Alternate history timeline of Epcot in a way that continues the core themes of Epcot well into the 21st century. All of those factors in this Alternate History Timeline help Epcot avoid the path it took in our reality and be a greater park then it currently is thanks to more stronger budgets and encouraging creativity for the Imagineers under the leadership of Michael and Frank that will lead to multiple golden ages for Epcot even into the 21st century including the 2020's which is the 40th anniversary decade but before we get that we have to start with the pre-history and early 80's era before going into Epcot Alternate history timeline leading up to the 2030's so we can see what Epcot would be like in the past, present and future if it stayed great and kept it's core themes intact well into the 21st century honoring the original purpose of Epcot being a city of tomorrow and the futuristic ideals of Walt Disney who envisioned the Florida Project and it's most important part The Experimental Protype Community of Tomorrow( EPCOT) which lead to the creation of Walt Disney World and Epcot Center that will continue to evolve becoming greater and continuing the message of it's core themes for years and generations to come.

So the internet, ubiquity of reasonably affordable travel, and zoning laws never happened in this alternate world so edutainment was/is still a viable concept?

those still will happen and the park would get updates to keep up so the edutainment will be a part of Epcot in this alternate world but it will evolve over time to include IP that will entertain and educate guests very different from the former future world area we have now.

==== The Beginning of Epcot: The Journey to Opening day 1966-1982====

df7b22d3181e7251ccd6f2e50d38757f.jpg

In October 1966 Walt Disney presents plans for the Florida Project and Epcot the city of the future in a the famous Epcot film we all know that showed the World Walt's grand plans and dreams for the Florida Project that will become Walt Disney World. The Epcot in the film shows a city with monorails, peoplemovers, communities, domed city centers, leisure attractions, underground roadways/service areas, Industrial park showcase and so much more in order to create a city of tomorrow that will change cities and the world forever but then 2 months later on December 15th 1966 Walt Disney dies and the company is immediately left without it's visionary leader to guide the company putting the future of the Florida project at risk of cancellation but then Roy O Disney comes out of retirement in Early 1967 to run the company and fulfill Walt's final dream. Later in 1967 it is decided that Magic Kingdom, golf courses, the seven seas lagoon, monorails, transportation center, 2 hotels, lake Buena vista villas and a campground will be built for the first phase of Walt Disney World Epcot becomes a part of the phase 2 plan and is still planned to be a city in fact all the needed requirements come together with the formation of the Reedy creek improvement district that gives Disney special governing powers and the ability to provide it's own services on their land this district is formed on May-12th-1967 ahead of the official groundbreaking of Walt Disney World on May-30th-1967. With Construction underway work on bringing Walt's final dream to fruition begins and throughout 1968, 1969 and 1970 construction processes on schedule for a 1971 opening but on January-10th-1970 the Walt Disney World preview center to show people the vacation kingdom of the world coming in 1971 and show future plans including the city of Epcot the preview center continues operating until September 1971 in preparation for the grand opening in October 1971.

On October-1st-1971 Walt Disney World officially opened with the Magic Kingdom theme park, Disney's Contemporary Resort, Disney's Polynesian Village Resort, 2 golf courses, The Seven Seas Lagoon, Transportation and Ticket Center, Hotel Plaza Blvd, The Walt Disney World Monorail system and Reedy Creek infrastructure the resort becomes an instant success and later in 1971 the Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground opens along with some additional attractions in MK. In 1972 The Lake Buena Vista Villas and golf course opens bringing a community to Walt Disney World and Magic Kingdom opens a couple new attractions but in the following year of 1973 The Energy Crisis emerges in America slowing down the success of Walt Disney World and only actively under construction projects move forward and throughout the next 3 years Pirates, Space Mountain, Wedway peoplemover, Carousel of Progress, Star Jets, Discovery Island, Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village, Fort Wilderness expansion, Disney's Golf Resort and River Country open completing Phase 1 of Walt Disney World. Now In 1976 Disney President Card Walker appoints Marty Sklar to begin plans for Epcot which will no longer be a City due to the company not wanting to operate a city so instead it will be a Theme park that still celebrates the future and community of the World as Walt envisioned back in 1966 and throughout 1976 planning moves forward on Epcot that is not in it's opening day form yet in fact it's still split into 2 parks Future World in the current location of Epcot and World Showcase in front of the Transportation and Ticket Center in 2 massive buildings housing multiple international pavilions.

In 1977 Epcot becomes 1 Park with Future World and World Showcase together under the guidance of Disney Imagineers and Future Disney Legends Marty Sklar and John Hench now Epcot slowly becomes its opening day form but with major differences including a figure eight shaped World Showcase surrounded by 3 dozen nation pavilions and American Adventure pavilion is in the center around where the path to World Showcase exists today very different from the World Showcase that was ultimately built. Meanwhile Future World is very similar to it's final design most of the pavilions are present but with different looks and locations the only pavilions close to final design are Spaceship Earth and
Communicore overall Epcot is on the path to it's final opening day design.

Throughout 1978 and 1979 Epcot continues evolving into it's grand inspirational opening day form that will become loved by Disney fans and general public around the world for generations to come and when the park opens it will change Walt Disney World forever slowly throughout the next 2 years Future World and World Showcase begin looking more like the areas we know and see today and the locations and looks of all pavilions continue to change until Epcot is announced to the Public in 1979 and showing the world the near final opening day design for the first time revealing the greatest Disney Park every designed to date decades before Animal Kingdom and DisneySea become reality until then Epcot will be the greatest Disney Park in the world setting the standards for future Disney Parks.

On October-1st-1979 Epcot Center breaks ground beginning an impressive 3 year construction project the largest one in America for the next 3 years starting a journey to the completion of Epcot Center in 1982 that will further expand vacations to Walt Disney World as construction is happening the final design of the Park now resembles the Epcot we know and love. Throughout 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982 work on Epcot continues on track for a 1982 opening with all major pavilions and areas taking shaping including the 180 foot Spaceship Earth the grand and miraculous Central Icon of Epcot towering over the whole park so big you can see it from a distance and around the park itself. In Early 1982 The Epcot Monorail opens for a special preview experience for WDW Guests with the monorail traveling in the opposite direction with a stop at the station and viewing preview center platform and later in 1982 the Monorail closes to receive final preparations for the October opening that is on track with Construction entering the final touches phase in preparation for the arrival of Epcot being on October-1st-1982 a historic moment for the Walt Disney World Resort and the Worl the Journey to opening day is almost complete.

The changes for 1997 at Epcot are new entertainment for World showcase and Future World, 3 new exhibits in Innoventions including a updated House of Tomorrow, a Covered outdoor seating area for Electric Umbrella, Updated exhibits in Wonders of Life, Updated exhibits in the Living Seas along with an updated pre-show film and queue elements, a new stage area behind the Fountain of Nations, Updated Fountain of Nations show and audio systems, Updated exhibits in World Showcase, the closure of Impressions de France for the film update project, Le Cellier becomes a table service signature restaurant, Les Boutique des Provinces is updated, The new Odyssey events pavilion opens, Liberty Inn updates it's menu, Voices of Liberty moves to the American Adventure rotunda, Friendship Boats are refreshed, The Outpost food location opens and a small Espresso Coffee Stand opens in Itlay all those changes improve the overall park experience ahead of major new additions and experiences to Epcot Center in preparation for the Millennium Celebration and the 21st Century ahead that will bring increased and higher than normal attendance in 1999 and 2000 the peak of the Millennium celebration Epcot has been selected to host for the Walt Disney World Resort. Beyond the park wide improvements and changes in Epcot for 1997 work continues on the Space Pavilion coming in late 1998 and work continues on Test Track due to issues with the new state of the art ride system which will delay the ride to 1999 in addition to this on March-6th-1997 work began on the UK Pavilion expansion coming in 1999 and later that month the Journey into Imagination pavilion update project is announced for 1999/2000 a few months those developments The Brazil Pavilion is formally announced and will begin construction in January 1998 for a 2001 debut plus plans for a updated Body wars in 2001 that will feature the new ride film from Westcot but this will not be the only ride from Disneyland Resort to come to Epcot in the 21st century after the opening of Westcot with those new developments the transformation and evolution of Epcot to attract guests of all ages and keep the park great for decades and generations forever keeping Epcot among the top 5 greatest Disney parks in the world far into the future of the Parks all thanks to Michael and Frank who have transformed the company and the Parks including Epcot for the better that will serve it well in the decades and years to follow.

Cool idea, but if I was going to create an alternate timeline, Walt would not have died of cancer and would have lived 12 years more and would be able to work on the original EPCOT Center.
