The Airing of Grievances

Disney and LucacsFilm was not some rushed wedding in Vegas. This was finally putting a ring on it after years of dating.
I'm glad so many people see it that way. I just don't. I view the franchise the same way I do a rash of other recently acquired IPs. But that's ok, we don't have to see it the same way.

Ok, here's my grievances. I don't really care that UOE and GMR closed. Epcot and Hollywood Studios are dead; they've been dead. Their messages and ideas have faded away with new additions and age. They also don't represent what guests want. In the 80s, the future was bright and limitless. Now, the future isn't very interesting. We are more cynical as a society, and a ride about the future sadly won't work anymore. The best example of what a ride with Epcot's original message would be like now is the end of Spaceship Earth. Does anyone want that? The future is much more vague than before. Making a ride about the future will become dated within 5 years. It won't even draw crowds to the park. Why would any business open (or keep open) something guests don't want?

With Hollywood Studios, film is a different medium. Huge blockbusters come out every weekend now. On TV, movies are played constantly. Most importantly, the idea of celebrity is very different. Magazines are exploiting celebrities every day and showing their worst sides. Movie production isn't very special. People don't care about the process of making movies anymore. If you are interested, you can watch behind the scenes footage at home. Guests just care about the movies themselves. The Studio idea was bad from the start, honestly. A fake studio? Why? I mean, who cares?

Epcot is looking to become a vague "futuresque" park. They'll add in IPs and try to make the park look cleaner. World Showcase will add more booze and more IPs. I would love to see EPCOT Center return, but it's not going to. This is what guests want, IPs. If guests want it, then Disney is going to give it to them, as they should. While Horizons looks like one of the best rides ever made, it didn't have any waits towards the end of its life. As a result, it only makes financial sense to get rid of it.

Hollywood Studios, unlike Epcot, never really had a great message, rides, and theming. It had an idea, sure. However, it's never had enough rides or enough, well, anything! It was underbuilt and has remained that way for over 25 years. I welcome changes being made to an IP based park. Would GMR have fit in new DHS? Yes! Would it have drawn in as many crowds as Mickey ride? No. We all know Disney is a business, and it's going to be run like one.

Lastly, my biggest grievances lie in the awful, awful, AWFUL maintenance the parks recieve at Disney World. The only one treated even decently is Animal Kingdom. Even it has a broken Everest and Dinosaur. Disney should fix their current attractions before building more new ones. Cause my last visit to Disney World showed a resort in pathetic shape.

My 2 cents... I have been going to WDW annually for over 20 years. I love it there! Just the feel of it and the fact that you can walk around singing Disney songs and no one looks at you funny, etc, is like taking a break from every day life. But I think that what people find entertaining has changed. 20+ years ago rides like EEA and TGMR had more of a wow factor and where technically more superior. Now they look old and dated. Even though my family liked those rides are a bit sad to see them go, if we are being honest, it is more from a nostalgia point of view then from the fact that they were amazing attractions. On most visits, we did not even ride them. I think that there is something in us as humans that want to see things stay the same. We like to pass things down to the next generation. I know that I want my future grand kids to ride on something that I took my kids on, etc. But TGMR is very dated. Anyone under the age of 40 did not even see most of those movies and have no idea what they are. They probably could have updated the movies to be more in line with today but it would not have been the same. There really is a fine line between keeping tradition and keeping up with the times and not everyone will be happy. But I am glad to see new things come, even at the expense of some "classics". I think any place, even WDW, needs to change to keep up with what people like and technology.
That being said, what bothers me is the price. It is getting way too high for normal middle class people to be able to afford. It had increased disproportionately to what people are making. The parks have become way too crowded which makes it feel like you are not getting the value of your admission. I personally think that after they finish "fixing" up the current parks that they absolutely need to add another one. Not only for more content but just to spread out the crowds. I am not as closed minded as others here, I would be happy with pretty much anything new. I don't care if it is a Marvel park or a Pixar park or Star Wars, anything. Heck, they can make a permanent food and wine fest park lol.
