That good 'ol Disney Magic

So I just got back from vacation. Y'know, just a standard, vanilla, plain, boring, regular vacation; a.k.a. a non-Disney vacation. We went to the beach for a few days, and while it was nice to relax and do nothing for a few days, I was just... bored; bored with it very quickly. Yet, I have the feeling that before Disney, I might have thoroughly enjoyed it. I try not to, but I can't help but internally compare every vacation I take to Disney, and yet no matter how good it is, it always falls short. It just isn't the same.

And I'm not even including the rides, attractions, characters & shows. It's the Disney Bubble*, the wonderful attitude of everyone around you**, the great food, the constant cleanliness of the parks, the cheerful atmosphere, not having to deal with your own luggage (thank you DME!), the AMAZING customer service (at the resorts, parks and restaurants), the wonderful smells (even though some of them are purposefully pumped out into the air as sales tactics doesn't mean I can't enjoy them!)... the list goes on and on. Am I alone in this?

* - The Disney Bubble:
The magical bubble that encompasses your time at Walt Disney World from the time you get on the DME (or arrive at your resort if you rented a car) that somehow, some way, makes you forget all of your worries and stress caused by your daily grind and helps you immediately unwind and relax. That thing (or things) that's been bugging you all month is somehow forgotten and slips away and is replaced by MAGIC and FUN and your inner child returning, if it ever left (and if it never left, he/she brought FRIENDS.) <--- this is the case with me

** - Those kind strangers (with a touch of magic):
While not EVERYONE you meet in the parks is going to be polite (let's be honest) most people you bump into are. In some cases, it's quite literal; like this one:
On our first trip together, my wife and I were excitedly taking advantage of short lines in Frontierland and after getting off of Splash Mountain decided a repeat was in order. We rushed off and were headed back around to get on again and I just simply wasn't watching where I was going. I was too busy laughing and joking around with the wife, and bumped into this poor, unsuspecting woman at the back of the line; and I mean HARD. I immediately begin to apologize profusely. This was my first foray into Disney since I was a kid (I'm pretty sure it was even the 2nd day we were there, so I was a very recent convert!), so I was not familiar with Disney Magic yet... so when her giant husband turned around, I was totally expecting a confrontation. And then, he simply checked on her, she said she was fine, and he asked where we were from and then we had a rather pleasant conversation with them for the rest of the time we were in line, carrying on as if we'd known them for a long time. I was shocked! And this is pretty commonplace while we're in the parks. People just have a better attitude at Disney unlike any other place I've seen.

Agree? Disagree? Have stories of Magic experiences at the parks yourself? The Magic in the parks converted me from an absolute Disney grump to a full-on Disney FANATIC very quickly, and that's amazing in my book.

I totally agree. If you're unsatisfied with anything, they never say "sorry there's nothing we can do about it". The CMs have always been polite and have been helpful, especially at the resorts. Smiles go a long way! If you have a complaint, do it nicely. You'd be surprised what you get in return! You can never go wrong on a DISNEY vacation! I'm so sad that was have to go to Myrtle Beach this year, but that's my husband's family. My husband wanted to "skip" Disney this year!:in pain: We will be going in 2015 though!:cat: Disney just makes me happy!:joyfull:

I know a good divorce lawyer...

I keed, I keed! :hilarious:

You wag!

Anyway, Disney just brings out better behavior, at least in me. I'm a smoker (I know, need to quit), and generally, I'll throw a butt anywhere. Not in WDW, though. I will either throw it in the designated receptacle or pick it up and find a trash can. AND if I see other people's butts on the ground, I will pick those up as well.

I totally agree! We love WDW. One of our favorite memories is of staying at POR. Every morning, we would make a game out of jumping only on the white lines on the cross walk to the car. How stupid is that! I could do that anywhere, but there is something particularly pleasing about thinking about doing in in Disney World! I could go on and on... But I'll spare you

There is just something different about being at Disney. I do NOT however enjoy all of the pre-planning I am now having to do for my upcoming trip. Wish they would have just stuck with FP or do away with it altogether. Let everyone wait the same amount of time worked fine for years.

We have moved the the "other side"- becoming more and more Uni vacationers- but it is the same feeling. IDK what I'd do sitting on a beach for a week! (but I live 5 minutes from the beach). I need lights, action, rides, loudness, and a little bit of crazy- all within walking distance. DH gave in a little and said we could do a giant WDW vaca in Dec 2015, but it doesn't look like it would be as spontaneous as it used to be. I'm not a fan of planning a detailed vacation down to the time I ride something- we like to just go and wing it. Wish Disney would do something similar to Express Pass instead of those wrist crocs :)

I love all my Disney vacations and enjoy each and every Disney vacation. I take lots of pictures every time and enjoy every attraction I have been on many, many times. I can't tell you how excited it was to take my 2nd trip to DLR 2 years ago and seeing the attractions WDW doesn't have any more. I must say I have also enjoyed my other trips to different places. I go to places that I know I will enjoy and most of them involve seeing historical areas. A totally different vacation was when my husband took me to Freeport Bahamas. I didn't want to go, but it was during the summer, and we don't do Disney in the summer. It was a wonderful trip and relaxing trip with lots of good food and beer. We went back a couple of years ago and it was even better. Of course the 2nd time I didn't look for things to do, like a tour through the National Forest where in the heat you walked for 15 min. in the extreme heat to the water to see the Golden Rock, never again. Nor go on a glass bottom boat, not like at Silver Springs. You went down in this narrow area and looked out dirty windows. Then you could snorkel when they reached a certain point. I thought I would drown. They threw me float to help me. HA! HA!

Theme parks and beaches aren't the only two options for vacations. There are certainly other vacation choices where you will not be bored. You could visit a city and see the cultural attractions such as shows, museums. You could visit a foreign country and see the history, architecture, try the local cuisine. You could go to a national park and see the natural wonders or do various outdoor sports like fishing, boating, climbing, skiing ...

Yep, everything is taken care of. You will not find that in many other vacations, but cruises, all-inclusive resorts try to provide that. Different companies succeed to different degrees.

It's related. If people are worry-free, then they are quick to dismiss harmless affronts. Most vacations will involve some sort of challenges, and if those are causing the vacationers stress, they may lash out even at someone who is not the cause of their problems.

Hey, love the avatar. I am a grumpy fan, too. I bought a grumpy shirt on our first trip, and it's always a conversation starter in the parks:

I hear you about FP+; it frustrates me too, but from what I understand, it has helped shorten wait times on other rides around the parks. I will try to find the article that has the documented proof if I can.

Going to a Disney park really does feel like you've entered another world. You feel like you're HOME. Like you're visiting family. I remember something I read in Imagineer Rolly Crump's wonderful book "It's Kind Of A Cute Story" - he said that "Main Street hugs you. Walt wanted it that way". Well, he certainly succeeded. :)
Sounds like I need to read this book!!!

I think the difference is that most vacations aren't actively TRYING to keep you entertained. Disney is. Every minute you spend on Disney property, you are completely enclosed in a world that is artificially created to be pleasant: you're never far from a restroom, a cold drink, or something to do.

Some years ago, my father attended a business conference hosted by Disney (because everyone wants to learn how they do what they do so successfully), and the Disney team flat out said that the goal is to make the guests happy to receive their bills. To ensure that no matter how much money a guest spends with Disney, that when the bill comes everyone just smiles happily and says "Well, that was money well spent! Can't wait to go back!". Their business model is built on the sale of intangibles: happiness, memories, and childhood dreams.

By contrast, the beach doesn't care if you're happy. The great cities of the world are indifferent to your desire for a perfect family photo. Individual hotels and restaurants have an investment in pleasing customers, but no one at the hotel really cares if your kid got sick during Phantom of the Opera and you had to leave early, because it isn't their problem. At Disney it's all connected, so every aspect of guest experience is everyone's problem. It's good to take risks and broaden our horizons by seeing the world, but it's also good to take a break and escape from it.

When I walk on Main Street and see the Castle, it is a wonderful feeling. I like to start there at the MK and end with a last look at the Castle.

There's no place like Disney World! I believe it's magical for the visitor no matter if they stay on or offsite.
We also visit the beach each year and many other places, but we continue to come back to WDW. We choose
not to over plan every meal, ride or show but rather take it as it comes, after all it is a vacation. It's a shame
so many folks have to complain about peeling paint and dust. Keep up the good work Disney World!!!
