Thanking a Cast Member?

I made a 1-day trip to Epcot in March. During that day, we had 2 memorable encounters with CMs.

I was with a high-maintenance 6 year old (not my child) who pitched a major fit at Living with the Land. She didn't want to ride it because she had never ridden it before :brick: .

Yolanda was far more patient than I--calmed her down and gave us FastPasses.

(kid loved the ride, BTW)

Later that same day, we bought a popcorn bucket at Epcot, and went to buy more. Since it was close to closing time, the CM gave us a freebie.

I was careful to write down the CM's name, location, and time.

On the way out, we stopped at Guest Services to fill out cards (at least I thought that was the procedure). The CM behind the desk asked what had happened, and said "OK." He did not give us cards to fill out or even write down what we had told him.

So...my question is:
What did we do wrong?
Were the free popcorn and "free" FP not appropriate CM responses? Could they have gotten in trouble for doing either of those things?
Were the FP and popcorn not considered "above and beyond" actions that would land in a personnel file?

I really do believe in giving back when CMs are good to me. I would think that those thank you notes are meaningful on a personal level, if not on a personnel level.

What should I have done?

Write a letter to guest relations. There's a forum at the bottom of this (Walt Disney World) about "Cast Member Appreciation" that will tell you what to do. CMs always love it when people send them letters- they may get written up in "Eyes and Ears", the CM newsletter.

BTW, the CM who's nametag said "Yolanda" was probably "Melissa," if you are going to write in to complement her. And yes, she's a very good CM.

Without question e-mail or even better write to guest relations about the cast members. I had a great experience with a merchandising manager at Epcot last May. I e-mailed guest relations and told them the story of how great he was to my 4 year old. I ran into the same cast member about 7 months later and he thanked me profusely for the e-mail sent to guest relations. So good news does get back to them. I make it a point now to write down names and send in my praises to the mouse.

Haha, it really is, isn't it? Yes, definitely write in, but I'll be sure and mention it to her, I'm sure it will make her day. :)

Letters to GR really do mean a lot to CMs. I got two while I was at The Land (maybe it's something about that pavilion  - although I was working in the greenhouses instead of the boat tour). I also love when people do because it shows the importance of good training. That's the Disney difference to me, and those that make it happen should know and be rewarded (and, generally, take extreme pride in getting these types of letters as their reward).

LOL...I had a very similar experience with my 6 year old. We had FP for Living with the Land, (DH, myself and 2 DS) When we got up to the ride, DS age 6 freaked out when he saw the water. He thought it was a flume type ride, which he hates, and refused to get on, no matter what we said. So, DH sat out with him while DS age 9 and I went on. Of course when we met back up, older DS had to tell younger DS all about the ride and how cool it was.....As you can imagine, younger DS was now upset and crying because he didn't go on.....

So....DH went up to Jeff, CM at FP line and explained the situation. (we had already turned in our FP earlier) He asked if there was any way he and DS could get in the FP line again (wait for stand-by was about 45 min). Jeff smiled happily and said "No problem, and the rest of your family can go again. No reason for them to sit and wait for you". And he waved us all through.....

So, Jeff saved the day and dried up a little boys tears.....we really appreciate the extra magic he gave us that day.

And, of course DS age 6 loved the ride and we ended up riding it again another day.

Love the CM at the Land!!

I used to work with him over at The Land, Jeff is a really good guy. Glad to hear everyone was able to go on and enjoy the ride!

I have gone to city hall and told them about the CM. One time i did that and wrote a letter. I actually got a letter back from the CM from Disneyland thanking me.
