Texting each other WAY too often!

Here's an unfortunate sign of the times in today's society. This is a pic of a group of teens walking by, all of them texting on their cellphones and NONE of them actually talking to each other!

I texted my mom on her iPad (iMessage) one time across the room because my dad was sitting right there and I really didn't want him to hear what we were talking about. Other times I've texted someone sitting next to me just to be silly. But never just walking next to each other having a conversation. I think my bff would give me a very hard time if I even tried that. Besides, are they aware that texting while walking is not safe?

I don't get it when they do it in the parks. I mean why go if you are not going to look around and enjoy it? Our standing rule is no phones taken into the parks. Of course mine gets locked in the gun safe and never leaves Texas when I go to WDW :)

You know my wife is cool with it, she gives her up as well. It's very liberating to just leave it behind :)

Common sense says we should take one into the parks for the MM app, but I am not sure we will even do that.

I'd never leave mine behind. Not because I'd be texting the entire trip (heck, my ex-friend and I got into a huge fight because I told her I wasn't picking up my phone if she called on vacation anymore; she could email me if she needed something and I'd get back to her; she didn't like that very much...) but I just feel like it's a safety issue. I know, there's the whole "In MY day we didn't have cell phones and managed" "Just pick a meeting place", but I still feel much safer having it on me. Last trip I was without parents for the first time ever, so there was no question; cell phone came with me. I get the rule of "Hey, no texting, you're on vacation with us as a family" but I'd never leave it behind anymore

Good logic, it's a personal preference thing I guess. I have a somewhat stressful job that my phone attaches me too. Leaving it behind is leaving the job behind in a way. As for my the family I just want us to have unintrupted bonding time :)

True, and I can see that, although I'd still bring one of those prepaid cell phones that you buy and use until you're out of minutes thing for vacation, and then not give the number to work. The unfortunate part of technology is that life can get in touch with you on vacation; I still have to check school emails and we bring a laptop so my dad can check work stuff.

Phones are good and bad, but the good by far outweighs the bad. They make life so much easier, and I don't see that as a bad thing. Does it make us lazier? Maybe, but so do most of the inventions and good ideas that have come into our lives.

On the topic of phones at Disney, I can see both sides. I like them for emergencies, as stated already, but they are also great for getting in contact with other members of your group should the group split up for some reason. With MM+ they are almost necessary IMO. When we were at WDW last week, we had to check our FP+ times multiple times because we couldn't remember what we booked. Plus, those FP+ kiosks never had a short line from what I witnessed.

The thing I can't stand if when people text, check Facebook, etc on rides. Especially on dark rides, it's just disrespectful to other guests on the ride. It's also disrespectful to the CMs if it's a ride like Jungle Cruise or GMR. A few years back we were riding JC, and I remember looking up, and 4 of the 7 people in my party were on their phones. The CM was making jokes that involved them, but they didn't even know it. That's probably not a great feeling as a CM, and I was kind of embarrassed.

That's just my take.
