it's not that difficult...

find out your ip (if it's changing every now and then I have more tips for you) with the URL I posted before...

register your dyndns with this ip .. or just type the plain ip for your urls .. like this

http://195.4.22.123/test.jpg

then you have to set a port forwarding in your router .. port 80(webserver) or port 21 (ftp) .. forward the port to the proper port (same) to your computers internal ip (e.g.192.168.1.101)

then it should work fine

Are you guys really sure you can do this? I mean, wouldn't you need a webserver to type http:// and then the ip address?

I just tried it with my FTP and it doesn't work. If i try http://(my ip addy) I get nada - but ftp://(my ip addy) then it asks for a login.

Tried to link http://(ip address)/image.jpg

nothing

I mean, if you guys are sure it can be done - then go for it, but I've got a nagging feeling you're barking up the wrong tree. Not to mention would a forum even support linking images that way?

I would definately go for a webserver .. to make sure it 100% works ....

but the setup of router and dyndns is (almost) the same and there is the main problem .. right now

I don't believe the image will show up in the forum, but a link to the img on the FTP server should open as a binary attachment. It will probably pop up the "Do you want to save or open this item?" box.

ok, now i'm with you. I used to do that all the time here - I'd post links to disney videos on my ftp.

the format was ftp://username:password@ipaddress/filename.ext

I was under the impression he was trying to insert an image into his post from his ftp. Posting a link to the file should work just dandy, as long as you include the username/password (if there is one). Oh, and of course the router stuff too. Has anyone tried to connect to his ftp using ftp software?

edit: I'll split it up, since the forum thinks i'm using smilies

ftp:// username : password @ ipaddress / filename.ext

A quick note of caution for anyone following this thread. This may be obvious to some, but others may not understand and could be opening themselves up to a problem.

If you link to your FTP site with the username and password, be sure to make the permissions for the username in the link READ ONLY. Do not post a link that contains a username with WRITE access. Even if you don't mind someone uploading to your directory, if you are not careful with security restrictions, they may upload a script that would allow them to take control of your machine.

yes, this is EXTREMELEY important. when i used to link files like that, i had created a special account for wdwmagic forum members. they had read ONLY permissions. in addition, i also limited the amount of simultanious (spelling?) connections - only allowing three people with that username at a time.
