Technology is killing creativity

It’s amazing to see how Disnwy can add so much more affects to their nighttime shows but boar the audience or at least me at the same time. They used to have so little to work with, Magic Kingdom had pyro, changing color light and narration but could still have a crowd roaring and flooded with nalstalgia. Epcot had pyro, laser images and blue lasers in the sky, light the buildings but could at the same time bring so much charm and keep the audience hooked thruout the entire show. The creativity that went into those simple shows is what made them just from the music alone. These newer shows despite the technology are horrible. They are soulless and They loose my attention half way thru.

What shows are you referring to specifically?

It's definitely easier to include 10 second clips of movies rather than develop a unique storyline. It's frustrating, sure, to lose those elements of the shows that we love as adults. But, I'm not sure we're the target audience for these shows anymore. Flashy photos and videos (really just IP) sell to the kids more than any well-developed story. As heartbreaking as that may be, Disney can be lazy here and probably attract bigger crowds and create a "must see" attraction with no real hook.

Totally agree.
HEA is a joke compared to wishes.

We were there last week and watched HEA with our 19 year old twins and 21 year old. They were all relieved when I suggested after watching the first half that we go on some more attractions instead. I really wanted to love it, but couldn’t even get through it.
Yup...exactly.
We felt the same way.
No story.... No emotion....no connection.
Cool tech though.

The practice of using film clips in spectaculars goes back 27 years to the opening of Fantasmic! in Disneyland. So Disney's been doing this a very long time. And they are relying on it much less now than they used to, instead using advanced projection technology to craft a lot of new content projected onto the castle, the Chinese theater, the tree of life, and Spaceship Earth.

I think "soul" and "emotion" and "connection" are things that are in the eye of the beholder, and the people who get the most out of a long-term Disney affinity are those who have a never-ending well of pixie dust within themselves so as to see the magic that Disney continues to create just as they have always created it, even though adapting to changing times and evolving technologies.

creativity gave us technology. someone thought it up all the technology that we love to complain about yet can't live without.
I like HEA and I liked Wishes, they are two different type of shows.

this is simply about preference. folks here tend to want the "old" wdw. basically there is nothing new that disney could do that people would like.

I've never understood the "emotion" thing? are folks dating the shows? what emotion? wishes did not "move" me or "inspire" me. basically I said "ooh" and "aah" like I do when they have the Macy's 4th of July fireworks along the Hudson.

and I've never left HEA without the crowds clapping and cheering wildly so not sure about these crowds you've seen that are "bored"

Emotion is feeling a deeper connection beyond just "ohhhhs and ahhhhhs".
Honestly - Wishes was one of the reasons why we kept coming back every summer. It was a huge emotional draw for us.
Watching it evoked feelings of happiness and connections to our real lives - -- the whole story and message of wishes just clicked.

-- folks here tend to want the "old" wdw. basically there is nothing new that disney could do that people would like.---

Folks here also tend to just LOVE whatever WDW does......WDW could do not wrong / how dare your criticize what the Mouse does!......stop complaining you are lucky to go and you are lucky to give WDW your hard earned money.

---I've never understood the "emotion" thing? ----
I feel sorry for you - - - - emotion and WDW have gone hand in hand for generations in our family.
Emotion is WHY we keep coming back. Story is why we keep coming back -

We all feel that WDW has been missing on these beats - - not just for the sake of complaining - - - but through our emotions.
We just don't feel it as much in their New creations.

IP experiences are nice - - - but the original WDW rides and ideas hold up more in my opinion. They have a uniqueness that IP based attractions can never hold.

I feel this way in the Navi river journey in pandora, with the creatures/animals on the "TV" monitors. To me that technology takes away from how Disney used to create attractions.

It is element changes like this that totally take away from that "emotion" that WDW was amazing at creating.
Imagine if WDW took out AA's in Splash Mountain and threw in some screens?

It just does not work as well to emotionally connect us.

While Fantasmic might have started it, the DL World of Color took it to the over the top infomercial level it seems to be at now. I still have no clue as to why people flock to World of Color the way they do... Nothing more than showing projecting trailers for movies on fountains.

With Happily Ever After I can't help but think that they created it as a way to save money. I haven't counted the fireworks, but it seemed to me that it had fewer fireworks overall and that they were just using projections more which is kind of lame. But if it saved them even 10% on the cost of fireworks each night it would add up over the years.

Have to agree with the OP here.

We were at Animal Kingdom this past February and were walking past the Tree of Life when their projection show began. We watched for several minutes, and even our 4 year old grandson got bored with it and was ready to move on....which we did.

It's pretty bad when HUGE colorful projections bore a 4 year old!

I think it is because projections on a immovable object are lifeless. Fireworks in the air drift move across the sky and appear in different areas to help hold your attention. Pretty lights on a fake tree or castle are just there, pretty much like christmas lights on your house. Sure you might look at a really well decorated house in the neighborhood at Christmas time for a minute, but you wouldn't stand their staring at it for 20 minutes when all that happens is different patterns of light.
