TDR Resorts

I was trying to do some research as to why there wasn't any interest from TWDC and OLC to build Disney branded resorts until so late in the game? Does anyone know why this business decision was made?

Was there a contractual agreement that TWDC couldn't build/manage their own hotels?

My sense is that OLC didn't really take the whole multi-day destination resort thing seriously until Disney started making every location a "Resort". I mean, Disneyland didn't really get into the hotel game either until it bought the rights back from Wrather Corp, and then leased the Pan Pacific. Paris, shortly after opening, resulted in a very serious re-evaluation of the hotel strategy for what had previously been single-Park locations. Plus, I have to assume DisneySea made Disney-operated hotels much more feasible for OLC, since they had a little more breathing room in terms of land, traffic flow, and infrastructure.

I've never heard about animosity between OLC and Disney, but OLC seems pretty willing to tell Disney "no" to whatever concepts they're peddling that OLC thinks are crap. Case in point would be Disney trying to push Disneyland's then-new Pressler-Tomorrowland onto OLC. Despite being what many consider to the only blight in an otherwise stellar property (though, it IS pretty cool to still see the Space Mountain ramp somewhere!), OLC chose to keep their 70's-Tomorrowland, bluntly passing on Pressler-Tomorrowland.

I'm really curious to see how they do their version of "New Fantasyland". Maybe they'll be the first to do a legit Frozen themed area (sorry, I don't hate Frozen :))
