glad to see someone who agrees with me. I definitely look forward to seeing all of Spring Awakening's actors as their careers on stage continue--their level of energy and enthusiasm for their job is encouraging. I loved Mary Poppins, but it (like most of Disney's big shows) focuses on massive sets, expensive special effects, and classic music we all love. It's a great day out with the family, and it's an especially fantastic way to get kids interested in musical theatre. However, some of the cast members in the show do not really seem like perfect fits for the show, and I don't like that they in some ways neutered the show from its much moodier West End production. They wanted to make it more palatable for the American audience, but shows like Spring Awakening, Rent, and Chicago show that we are not a bunch of prudes unwilling to enjoy daring theatre. Putting the kids before a toy firing squad is certainly a bit scary for kids, but it would help to develop Mary Poppins character better by emphasizing the lengths she will go to in order to teach the children. It is unfortunate that they decided to give us a nicer Mary Poppins than you would find in the book and on the West End (and, again, I love the show here, but I understand its criticisms). It's also annoying that they introduce a spectacular villain in Miss Andrew (perhaps my favorite performance in the whole show, though Gavin Lee as Bert is right up there, as well), and they don't use her nearly enough. She ought to have been used for more than just the first 15 minutes of Act 2.
