Well guys im a Hardlines Exec at Target and it turns out as of Nov 1st Target upper mgt instructed all of the stores to take down ALL DISNEY POS(signage) .
Turns out Target is mad at Disney due to the fact that Disney is doing biz with Itunes and allowing members of the site to download new movies at a discount rate verses buying it from Target.
All stores were not only instructed to pull down movie POS and replace signs for CARS and Pirates with Over the Hedge POS but also pull signs down on ALL other merchandise as well including toys and clothes.
This is Targets way of telling Disney they are mad?????
Even though I work for Target in Mgt my heart belongs to Disney!!!!!! Maybe nows a great time to send Disney my Resume and let Disney use my 15 years of Mgt experience with my MBA.

This sounds silly to me. I love Target (and I would definetly shop there over Wal Mart any day) but if I am looking for a discount on DVDs it is not the first place I would go. I would also not download a movie from Itunes instead of owning the DVD. Maybe the execs should wait and see if this has any impact on the DVD sales before removing all marketing out of anger.

Nov. 1st has already passed...do you mean Dec. 1st?

If they're mad at iTunes and Disney why don't they stop selling iPods too?

It was Nov 1st when they decided to make a statement against Disney. They did this already on the 1st. I think Target is really being very dumb. Disney has the right to sell and do biz with other retailers and web sites to sell it content.

Disney's response to Target was if they continue to pull down Disney's signs, they will not receive any more shipments of Cars DVDs and will not receive any DVD shipments of Pirates, which is likely to be the top selling DVD this year.

Target has more to lose than Disney does in this little hissy fit. Disney can sell their product at any other number of stores (the already have big deals with Wal-Mart and K-Mart, Target's competitors) and people will go there to buy it if Target doesn't. The way people get their entertainment media is changing rapidly and I'm glad Disney is charting the new course to not only give people the options they want but also providing a way to indirectly fight movie/tv show piracy on the internet by simply making it available directly from the source.

Very well said.Wal Mart sells 40 % or more of all Disney DVDs worldwide so if Consumers have to get their Disney DVD there instead of Target they will take a lot of their buying dollars to buy other items to Wal Mart as well.
Also this a big mistake as far as timing too.You dont start a war right before Xmas shopping season. If Target has a gripe they should have worked with Disney after season to work something out-This will only send people away to buy Disney goods even though Target has not pulled Disney products off the shelf only not getting Cars or Pirates Dvds and of course the Target shopper will be the one who gets wounded in the battle which in turn hurts Target because if I cant get my Disney DVD at Target ill go somewhere else who has it.
Man im embarresed im in MGT at Target:cry:

Ummmmmm...

The Disney Store wasn't around until the 80's, many years after Disney merchandise was available for purchase in various other retail establishment :)

Sounds like another bad decision. Remember, last year Target banned the Salvation Army, now it has waged war on Disney.

I generally dont mind paying the higher prices at Target because the store atmosphere is nicer and I dont have to generally worry about the mass shoulder to shoulder crowds like at Walmart. But I think this is a little over the edge. If Target had an exclusive arrangement with Disney to be the only outlet in the market for Disney DVDs then I would understand. Sounds to me that maybe a higher up in Target management is upset because he didnt get his rear end kissed when he went on vacation at WDW.

Bob Ulrich-CEO of Target didnt get to ride in front of the Monorail last visit-lol

At my last management meeting we discussed to combat not allowing the bell ringers in front of the store they decided to pressure us all into giving money every check to United Way and Target has an exclusive Salvation Army Xms tree orniment that for every one u buy Target gives a percent to the Salvation Army.
Makes you wonder why Target allowed people to camp out in tents 2 days before PS3 came out in front of the stores but wont allow bell ringers.

I really do believe that the Salvation Army is one of the few charities that walks the walk. They do not have executives with huge salaries and everything is run on a shoestring.

However, I must say that Target is fairly enforcing their rule about no soliciations.

Running errands on Saturday means running a gauntlet of people wanting money from me. It's reminiscent of film I've seen of children begging in the streets in 3rd World Countries.
Boy Scout Popcorn
Girl Scout Cookies
Raffle tickets for a soccer team
Entertainment cards for playground equipment
Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll sales
Send a kid to the circus
and the list goes on

At Target there is NONE of this, regardless of the worthiness of the cause.

In response to the hoo-ha last year, Target is donating a lot of money to the SA (I thought I heard $1 million) and selling the ornament.

I may not like a rule, or may not agree with it, but if it is fairly enforced, it is harder to criticize it.

From www.showbizdata.com:

Target and Disney Call Truce
Target and the Walt Disney Co. have apparently reached a cease-fire agreement in their battle over DVD pricing. Target had begun taking down some signs advertising Disney DVDs and moving others to unfavorable locations after Disney refused to lower the wholesale prices of the products to the level of those offered by Apple on its iTunes online store. Disney, however, observing that DVD buyers receive many "extras" with their purchases, reacted by threatening not to provide new releases -- including Cars and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest -- to Target. However, on Saturday the Los Angeles Times reported that the two sides had reached a settlement in which Target would restore the in-store Disney ads in return for a licensing deal that would allow it to sell a Winnie the Pooh product line made exclusively for the chain. In reporting on the deal, disclosed by sources who "asked not to be identified because the subject remains tense," the Times commented: "If Target had imposed drastically reduced shelf space on Disney, other studios would have been more reluctant to make their own cut-rate deals with Apple, which wants uniform pricing in its catalog." Currently Disney films are the only studio films available in Apple's catalog.
