You went and spoke to Guest Relations because they don't want you talking to the parrots?

Jeeze.. Makes me think of the other great copmlaints they must hear every day.

I spoke with a cast member at Flights of Wonder. She was as perplexed as everyone else about this "rule". She told me that FOW is a separate company and the birds were not "Disney" birds. The more I delved into this, the more kooky I sounded so I let it go.

I asked at Guest Relations about when and why this rule came about. She couldn't help me either. I guess I'll have to write a letter and ask.

But did you REALLY let it go?

I didn't go to Guest Relations to complain. I wanted to know when and why this rule came about because during my previous visit I was not stopped at all from interacting with the parrots.

If it makes you feel better, I didn't give the CMs name because I understood that she must have just been doing her job.

BINGO. It's nearly impossible to get birds to completely stop mimicking people, when it's swear words, then Disney would have to remove the bird for good.

would be reasonably funny initially though :lookaroun

i tend to not talk to the birds - if you stay still (impossible during peak periods but first thing in the morning...) and arm yourself with a camera they seem to pose.

also if it were for natural habitat reasons, im sorry, but thousands of people walking through a rainforest a day is not that natural. People will always be talking when they walk by the Macaws, the macaws are going to pick up on it sooner or later. Saying hello is not so bad, they should actually train them /to say hello so when guests say it, they say it back,\.

I kind of think the CM is ridiculous in this case.

The CM was one who's job was to answer questions about the animals and whatnot, right? Then if so, part of her job is to watch over the animals as well.

I know its weird, but it makes sense. They don't want the birds to learn any words. Its not natural and once they learn a word they won't stop. It sounds like the CM wasn't rude about it either if she told you the reasoning behind it. I mean, it wasnt like "because I SAID so!!"

I seem to be confused. If i am saying hello directly to the bird or if i am standing in front of the cage talking to my DW wouldn't the bird pick it up all the same. I agree witht he other posters who said if they don't want any interacting then they should either put the birds n a sound proof cage or move them far enough away.
Seems like a weird rle if it truely was a rule

I don't know..i dont want to be offputting or offensive in any way, and I will say that I have no way of knowing exactly what transpired, but honestly there had to be some reason why the CM approached you. Could it be (and i am just asking) that maybe you were a bit loud, boisterous, obnoxious, or otherwise ....um...annoying? Perhaps you were acting in a way that was annoying to the birds and other guests.

The truth is that I have seen CM's tell people to stop talking to the birds because the were standing there for what seemed like FOREVER literally YELLING at the birds trying to get their attention. After they were told to go away, they agrued with the CM, and used the same excuses you have..ie "i was only saying pretty bird", or "I wasnt doing anything"..

Again, I dont know..Im just saying there has to be a reason why this happened. Let it go..It really wasnt a federal offense anyway. Letting it ruin your day is a little much.

No offense, no disrespect. Just saying... :animwink:

Last July while getting a late night ride on the Haunted Mansion I stopped and took a picture of my wife in the doom buggy. We were the only people on the ride and when I stepped into the doom buggy the cast member said no pictures. I said yes no flash pictures of course and he said no you cannot take pictures in here because of copyright laws. I actually laughed in his face and told him he was insane. I then took his picture LOL. I always follow the rules but some cast members are idiots and go out of their way to make you feel bad. I will definitely say "Hello" to the parrots the next time I am in AK :P

How odd! I always stop to talk to the birds, and I've never had a CM say anything. The birds seem to enjoy the attention. (As I stopped to get out my camera once, one of them said "come here!" I'm sure he had no idea what he was saying, but I guess after a million guests tried to get him to come closer, he picked it up!)

I can see a CM saying something if you were trying to teach the bird something inappropriate, but the ones I remember there already speak, so what's the harm in saying hello?

Well, if you always follow the rules, then you should have just had a seat in the doom buggy like you're supposed to. You only have a few seconds to get in the doom buggy before they have to slow down or stop the omnimover system, which I'm sure is something they don't like doing if its because a guest didn't do what they were supposed to. They probably had to slow down the omnimover speed to wait for you to get in.
