I haven't been back in more than a year. Returning 10/29-11/4. Would it be worth it to purchase the card during the trip then use it? Or just go directly with AP discount?

Depends. The TiW for APs is $150. The discount is 20%. If you calculate that using the 20% discount will save you more than the purchase cost of the card (it's good for 13 months), then go for it.

Here's the website. Check it out; not every restaurant accepts it and there are blackout holidays.

FWIW we are a family of 3 also. We try to squeeze in 3 trips a year and have always got a TiW. For us it pays for itself on the first trip. However we do like to dine at signatures several times during a trip and we don't eat at a whole lot of counter service places. But for us it's a no brainier. Like was posted before - I would look at your dining habits and what you typically spend to see if you can cross that $750 threshold. Once you do that - the decision should be pretty clear.

My wife always saves our receipts from the TiW places we eat and adds up the savings at the end of our trip. It's usually pretty substantial. Maybe that's a sign that we're enjoying ourselves a little too much ;)

My experience w/discounts for AP at WDW hasn't been rewarding - most places don't offer a discount for Annual Passholders. DLR and WDW are a different story, all dining locations and most snack locations give discounts with an AP.
