T-Rex Cafe

I know there hasn't been much talk lately on the T-Rex Cafe which is coming to Downtown Disney but I did stumble across the official website:

http://www.trexcafe.com/index.html

The website has the menu as well as some other information about the restaraunt. To me the menu seems very similar to that of the Rainforest Cafe. The interesting thing I found on the website was that under locations it said "Coming Soon to Downtown Disney Marketplace." I found this interesting but I would think they would want to put this restaraunt on the opposite end of Downtown Disney so it wasn't right near the Rainforest. Does anyone know anything more about this?

On the website for Landry's Restaraunts they had the press release saying that they were building the T-Rex Cafe in Downtown Disney. It also said that they were going to be building an Asian themed restaraunt in Animal Kingdom that would probably open in 2007. In order for that to happen don't you think they would have to start construction pretty soon. I haven't heard anything else about this Asian restaraunt. Does anyone know if construction has started or where exactly the restaraunt is going to be located?

Here is the press release from a while back:

Landry's Acquires T-Rex Cafe From Schussler Creative,
Including Two Disney Restaurant Sites

Monday February 27, 7:00 am ET
HOUSTON, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Landry's Restaurants, Inc. (NYSE:
LNY - News), one of the nation's largest
casual dining, entertainment and hospitality companies, announced that it has acquired 80% of the restaurant concept T-Rex:
A Prehistoric Family Adventure, A Place to Eat, Shop, Explore and Discover® from Schussler Creative, Inc. for approximately
$7.6 million, including reimbursements for research and development costs, accounts payable, construction draws and preopening
expenses. In addition, under the agreement, based on the ultimate success of the venture (combined profits of all
stores exceeding $20 million), Landry's can acquire Schussler Creative's 20% interest for an amount up to an additional $35
million.
T-Rex is a unique concept that features dining and retail in an interactive prehistoric environment. The concept is built around
water, fire and ice -- guests visiting T-Rex will be greeted with life size animatronic dinosaurs that live among cascading
waterfalls, bubbling geysers, a fossil dig site and much more. Locations are planned domestically and internationally, the first
of which is slated to open this spring in The Legends mall in Kansas City, Kansas; with another opening in Downtown Disney®
(near Orlando) in early 2008.
In addition to the T-Rex concept, Landry's has acquired the majority interest in Schussler Creative's new Asian themed eatery
(which is expected to open by summer 2007) inside Disney's Animal Kingdom® Theme Park. This Asian-themed restaurant
with retail is reminiscent of the western Himalayan foothills in India and Nepal, featuring a rural village called Anandapur in a
jungle with a tiny town-like mass at its center. Asia will offer full service table dining, as well as quick service food. This
Asian-Fusion concept will feature Asian decor, complete with Asian antiques, as well as a retail component that will offer Asian
goods ranging from Sushi plates to chopsticks and fine teapots.
"One of the major factors that drew us to this transaction was the chance to expand our operations with Disney," said
Landry's President, Chairman and CEO Tilman J. Fertitta. "Our existing three Rainforest Cafes located at Downtown-Disney®,
Disney's Animal Kingdom® Theme Park and Disneyland Resort in California generate approximately $80.0 million in revenue.
We feel that the T-Rex and Asian theme concepts are a perfect fit with Disney's unmatched entertainment offerings."
Schussler Creative Chairman Steve Schussler was the founder and creator of the popular Rainforest Cafe restaurant concept,
which Landry's purchased in 2000, and has since grown to be one of Landry's most successful concepts. "Landry's is the
perfect strategic partner to turn our dream into an ongoing reality," said Steve Schussler. "Landry's has done an excellent job
of maintaining the Rainforest Cafe brand as the premier themed eatery in the world. T-Rex uses elements familiar to Rainforest
Cafe fans such as animatronics and special effects to create a whole new type of dining experience that takes visitors back
in time in an educational and entertaining way," added Schussler.

The walls for the Asia restaurant have gone up, but I'm not sure if any activity has been going on yet. The new restaurant will be located on the left-hand side of Asia when you enter Anandapur from Discovery Island. There used to be a small counter service location (Chakranadi something?) there with tables and chairs in the back. The walls extend from where the broken down truck once was ( before being moved to near the Everest area) and back around the corner to the restrooms in Asia (the ones closest to the entrance to the Maharajah Jungle Trek).

Construction has begun on both projects. The walls have been up in Asia for over a month and they are removing the quick service carts and the kitchens that support them. The wall cuts about 1/4 of the Asia street leading up to KAli River Rapids. The T-Rex cafe broke ground this week. Three parking areas of Pleasure Island have been fenced off and the concrete ha been pulled up. The site is right across from tour bridge two, the main entrance to Pleasure Island. I am not sure how they will connect it to downtown Disney walkways.

Thanks for clearing up that it will indeed be a new building not a re-theme of the existing rainforest cafe.

Actually, ground has not been broken for t-rex. The project you see going on there is an expansion of the parking lot to make room for t-rex. The road that led up to the P.I. trailer has been removed and will now become a much-needed parking area.

Thanks for the video. I was pretty curious to see what this restaurant was going to look like. And now that I have, I have to say, I am kinda disappointed. I was expecting somewhat realistic looking animatronic dinosaur figures... not garrishly painted foam cut-outs (of course, none of us were around back then... so how do I know if they are realistic looking or not!!). But, this just looks like a rainforest cafe with a couple of strategically placed dinosaurs.

Don't get me wrong, I like the rainforest cafe at WDW. But, I used to like it a lot more before rainforest cafes started popping up in malls and popular tourist areas. Now, when I go to the rainforest cafe at WDW, it doesn't seem unique or special. It's just another rainforest cafe... When I dine at Disney, I like to go to places where I can have an experience that I cannot have anywhere else.

Hopefully, the theming at the T-Rex cafe in Downtown Disney will be much better than the theming at the Kansas City restaurant (the one in the youtube video)

I just read a post on another DISney website from a lady who belongs to the Rainforest Club. She receives newsletters from them once a quarter, and she said she just received one stating that the RFC at DTD Marketplace was closing and being replaced by T Rex.

Don't know how credible the info is, but since I just saw it, thought I'd share.

There seems to be way too much going on in that restuarant. The theming is just too over the top and garish. It looks more like a video arcade than an eating establishment.
