When do you think running shoes are at their best? It would seem they take a while to break-in, but then fairly rapidly drop off to the stage of being worn out.

For me, about 2 weeks to 3 months.

I never really have a problem with them breaking in. At about 3 months is when I begin to notice a loss of cushion.

But then I am a larger person. (6'4" 210 lbs). I put a beating on shoes. They break in faster but wear out faster.

I like them right out of the box. That seems to be the best feel they will ever have to me. About 1 week after, they seem to loosen just a bit and hold that for about a month. Then it is like they loosen a lot more and so on and so forth.

After 2 months, Im ready for a new pair but my budget makes me keep them till I have adequate mileage on them. Always depends on the shoe.

400 on my Asics 1125's
300 on my Mizuno wave riders and they were slap worn out. Hurt to run in.
I have 125 on my current Mizuno Inspires. im looking at about late February to get some new ones.

I get 300 out mine...back in the day would always have to break 'em in but now if they're not good out of the box, they're not going to get better, but once I start closing in on that 300, I agree, that side of the slope comes fast and you can just feel it...

Sweet spot? Ehh.. usually seem to stay constant for me from about 2-3 weeks or 15-20 miles in, til I start to wear through them. I don't do it consciously, but I think I get 8-12 months out of them. My legs don't seem to notice extra wear, and since I have corrected my stride a touch the shoes themselves wear much more evenly.

It takes a while for me to get the sweet spot. 150-175mi for me to get comfortable, that's why I hate getting new shoes. Out of the box, I swear I'll get a stress fracture in the midfoot.

Depends on the shoes and the runner. My Newton Racers took a while to break in - almost 100 miles until they started to feel really comfortable. The Newton Sir Isaac felt just as comfortable right out of the box (due largely to the contoured lug design). Nike Free take little to no break-in time - a couple of short runs.
