OK, so the movie has been out a few days now. Who has seen the movie and what did you think? Those who have not seen this please beware of the Spoilers below.
I loved it!! I only knew a brief summary going into it and while it was twisted, I really enjoyed it.
The actors were all great, both in their acting and in their vocals.
I was very impressed with everyone's voices. While it was weird to hear Johnny sing in the begining, I got used to it and actually enjoyed it. After the movie, I went home and bought the CD...it's the only thing I've been listening to.
Onto the blood- I'm terrified of blood. Even the talk of it gets me dizzy. So I didn't know how well I'd handle it. Thank god Burton made the blood neon-ish. That made it bearable to look at...I never had to look away. Back to the color of the blood, it was almost like it was a character of its own. The movie lacked color. The blood was very bright and stood out. To me, it was like its own character.
Now, the spoliers.
Was anyone else shocked when the weird homeless lady turned out to be his wife?! My friends called it when she first appeared, but I didn't listen to them. Completely shocked me! I had a feeling Toby was going to kill Mr. Todd after he sang Not While I'm Around. When Sweeney found out about his wife, and started dancing with Ms. Lovett, I was like "??" But once I saw the fire door open, I knew what he was going to do....still shocking.
I didn't think I'd like it as much as I do. I'm seeing it again tomorrow...can't wait!
edit: Oh! Did anyone else hear Jack Sparrow's voice throughout the movie? My friends and I did, and my mom heard it in the CD.
That was very puzzling! When it was over, my friends and I looked at each other and said, "what happened to Johanna??"The homeless woman turning out to be his wife, Toby kiling Todd and Mrs. Lovett being thrown into the oven I found a bit easy to guess. The only thing that bothered me actually was they never say what happens to Johanna and the sailor. I assume they run off together, but we never find out. I guess Tony runs off and lives, but I wanted to know what happens to the two lovers. I wonder if the play reveals what happens?
Yeah, Todd's voice did have a Jack Sparrow feel to it, only his was much angrier due to the crimes against him.

Like you, we just assumed she ran off with the sailor boy.
edit: Saw it with my mom today. She didn't care for it because of all the blood and gore. I kept asking her stuff like "what about Johnny? what about the singing? what about blah blah blah..." She couldn't answer. I think she was too petrified to answer.
I myself saw it opening day, first showing at PI 24. I was super excited cause this is one of my favorite musicals, and I knew that Burton was a perfect match for it. It was absolutely PERFECT. I myself have seen the musical and I can say it's VERY faithful to the show, and while it does have its cuts and trimmings with the songs, it's still very faithful to the show. Depp and Burton once again prove to be a huge force to be reckoned with and a spectacular duo again. It was also REALLY impressive in how Depp was able to sing those songs and NOT have any experience. Sondheim is VERY hard to sing at times, particulary with his melodies and harmonies. I myself firsthand experienced how hard it is (I sang with our mini-ensemble The Ballad for our District Thespian Competition back in January).
Green Lantern: Actually, that's also a bit of a tiny plot hole that the show itself has. What happens with Anthony and Johanna is never explained.
And yeah, the ending was still shocking even though I did know what was going to happen. The movie is THAT good. Go watch it folks!
Thanks for clearing this up. I wonder why they never explain what happened?
FINALLY, GL, I get to enter this thread!!
I went today... all alone, because no one wanted to go with me... lame.
But... I truly loved it! Burton is genius and everyone in it was brilliant. Helena is just breathtaking to me... she just embodies that character perfect.
I thought Johnny's voice was perfect. I need to get this CD tomorrow. I am in love with the soundtrack.
I agree Nicole, about the blood being it's own character.. and a prominent one, at that. The way it was like fire-engine red made it much more apparent in all the darkness. I grinned through the whole film... I dig on the blood and gore.. I am kind of grim like that. hehe
I loved the dark dirty filth of it all.
I thought he was pretty good as well...kinda annoying, but kinda funny. What did you all think of Pirelle? I thought he was pretty good in the film. I love the song when they were trying to sell the hair elixir.

I liked that song too. It was the funniest song...well that and A Little Priest.
