I haven't seen it yet, but I am very familiar with the plot and the music. I need ot make time to see it.

My 17 year old daughter saw the movie yesterday. Jen loved it. But Jen is a "Broadway baby", she's seen over 40 musicals on Broadway since she was 6 years old. and she also loves horror/slasher movies. so sweeney is perfect for her.

I saw it yesterday and it was very good!:sohappy: I've never seen the musical so I cannot compare the movie to it, but it is definitely worth seeing!

I went in with a very small knowledge of the story. I honestly went because I am a Tim Burton fan and will see anything he does. That being said I really enjoyed it. It made me want to see the musical now to get the full story, hear the songs that had to get cut from the film and so on.

I loved it!! I only knew a brief summary going into it and while it was twisted, I really enjoyed it.

The actors were all great, both in their acting and in their vocals.

I was very impressed with everyone's voices. While it was weird to hear Johnny sing in the begining, I got used to it and actually enjoyed it. After the movie, I went home and bought the CD...it's the only thing I've been listening to.

Onto the blood- I'm terrified of blood. Even the talk of it gets me dizzy. So I didn't know how well I'd handle it. Thank god Burton made the blood neon-ish. That made it bearable to look at...I never had to look away. Back to the color of the blood, it was almost like it was a character of its own. The movie lacked color. The blood was very bright and stood out. To me, it was like its own character.

Now, the spoliers.

Was anyone else shocked when the weird homeless lady turned out to be his wife?! My friends called it when she first appeared, but I didn't listen to them. Completely shocked me! I had a feeling Toby was going to kill Mr. Todd after he sang Not While I'm Around. When Sweeney found out about his wife, and started dancing with Ms. Lovett, I was like "??" But once I saw the fire door open, I knew what he was going to do....still shocking.

I didn't think I'd like it as much as I do. I'm seeing it again tomorrow...can't wait!

edit: Oh! Did anyone else hear Jack Sparrow's voice throughout the movie? My friends and I did, and my mom heard it in the CD.

I loved it. Having seen the original tour with Angela Landsury and owning the CD, the VHS of the show, and knowing the score by heart; I thought T. Burton and S. Sondheim did a superb job of transforming the show to a new format. Regarding the cut songs, they were mostly chorus songs used for scene changes. The only song I really missed was The Quintet. I MUST own the DVD!

The homeless woman turning out to be his wife, Toby kiling Todd and Mrs. Lovett being thrown into the oven I found a bit easy to guess. The only thing that bothered me actually was they never say what happens to Johanna and the sailor. I assume they run off together, but we never find out. I guess Tony runs off and lives, but I wanted to know what happens to the two lovers. I wonder if the play reveals what happens?

Yeah, Todd's voice did have a Jack Sparrow feel to it, only his was much angrier due to the crimes against him.

I myself saw it opening day, first showing at PI 24. I was super excited cause this is one of my favorite musicals, and I knew that Burton was a perfect match for it. It was absolutely PERFECT. I myself have seen the musical and I can say it's VERY faithful to the show, and while it does have its cuts and trimmings with the songs, it's still very faithful to the show. Depp and Burton once again prove to be a huge force to be reckoned with and a spectacular duo again. It was also REALLY impressive in how Depp was able to sing those songs and NOT have any experience. Sondheim is VERY hard to sing at times, particulary with his melodies and harmonies. I myself firsthand experienced how hard it is (I sang with our mini-ensemble The Ballad for our District Thespian Competition back in January).

Green Lantern: Actually, that's also a bit of a tiny plot hole that the show itself has. What happens with Anthony and Johanna is never explained.

And yeah, the ending was still shocking even though I did know what was going to happen. The movie is THAT good. Go watch it folks!

That was very puzzling! When it was over, my friends and I looked at each other and said, "what happened to Johanna??"

Like you, we just assumed she ran off with the sailor boy.

edit: Saw it with my mom today. She didn't care for it because of all the blood and gore. I kept asking her stuff like "what about Johnny? what about the singing? what about blah blah blah..." She couldn't answer. I think she was too petrified to answer.:lol:

Thanks for clearing this up. I wonder why they never explain what happened?

Well, I've been thinking about that, about why even in the movie they've never explained what actually happens with Anthony and Johanna (however, it's clearly assumed that they've run away together somewhere else). I think in both the show and movie (and looking at it from a writer's standpoint, as I write stuff for fun), it's an artistic decision.

Why for you ask? Well, cause of how at that moment, after all through the movie/show escalating more and more the events leading up to Turpin's death (the climax), you saw more and more his rage growing. Of course, once he gets Turpin in there, he goes all out as he kills him. Once he notices the sailor (aka Johanna), he starts to notice another flaw in his plan. In that, his madness has finally taken over and blindsights him, which inevitably leads to how he accidentally kills his wife. This leads to him going down to basement with Ms. Lovett, and how he realizes the truth, and well, you know the rest of the story.

Thing is, if there was a random scene like that of Anthony and Johanna being there in the midst of all that, it would just seem REALLY out of place and would distract from the action going on and also the emotional effect of that whole sequence.

It was pretty good. Some weak bits, but that happens with stage musicals adapted to cinema. But still well directed and well acted.

FINALLY, GL, I get to enter this thread!!
I went today... all alone, because no one wanted to go with me... lame.

But... I truly loved it! Burton is genius and everyone in it was brilliant. Helena is just breathtaking to me... she just embodies that character perfect.
I thought Johnny's voice was perfect. I need to get this CD tomorrow. I am in love with the soundtrack.

I agree Nicole, about the blood being it's own character.. and a prominent one, at that. The way it was like fire-engine red made it much more apparent in all the darkness. I grinned through the whole film... I dig on the blood and gore.. I am kind of grim like that. hehe

I loved the dark dirty filth of it all.

Welcome to the thread, Peaches!

I went alone too to see it as you know, no worries, at least we got to see it!

I like the blood color in this, as well as in Sleepy Hollow.

Helena was good in this, but she's been good in all of his stuff she has done so far. It's nice to see them working together. They just had their second child together this month, a little girl. Now they have a boy and girl. I'm so happy for them. I love Burton. I just got the book on the Todd movie this week, as well as a stack of other Burton books.

What did you all think of Pirelle? I thought he was pretty good in the film. I love the song when they were trying to sell the hair elixir.

I thought he was pretty good as well...kinda annoying, but kinda funny.

I liked that song too. It was the funniest song...well that and A Little Priest.
