LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (May 28) - Hundreds of workers at two hotels on Walt Disney World property walked off the job Tuesday in what is the first strike in years in the Orlando area's tourism industry.

Teamsters-affiliated housekeepers, laundry workers, seamstresses and public area attendants at the Swan and Dolphin hotels picketed outside the hotels.

Last week, the workers rejected for a second time a three-year contract covering 400 of the hotels' 2,000 workers. Management said it would implement the contract unilaterally.

Although the hotels are on Disney property, they are owned by Tishman Hotel Corp. and managed by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide.

Treva Marshall, a spokeswoman for the hotels, couldn't comment immediately on whether there was any disruption in services.

Workers wanted a guaranteed 40-hour work week and job assignments based on seniority.

Strikes in Orlando's tourism industry are rare. Area labor leaders could recall only two in the past decade: a musicians' strike at Walt Disney World and one by hotel workers at the Grosvenor Resort near Walt Disney World.

Hundreds of hotel workers were laid off last year during the tourism slowdown.

There also had been fears of a strike in Las Vegas this week. But Monday, a weekend walkout on the Strip was likely averted when unions representing culinary workers and bartenders agreed to a five-year deal with hotel-casino giant MGM Mirage.

Negotiators had also reached deals in recent days with Mandalay Resort Group, Park Place Entertainment, Harrah's Entertainment and the Tropicana. The agreements cover about 35,000 of the 47,000 workers represented by Culinary Local 226 and Bartenders Local 165.

A strike is still possible, pending the outcome of negotiations with smaller Strip and downtown Las Vegas properties. The strike deadline is Saturday.

Yep, I know that...you should see it down here!!

When I was at WDW this past weekend, (24-27) we stayed at the Boardwalk. Saturday morning we woke up to a low-flying plane with a banner that read "Stop worker abuse @ Swan & Dolphin" I was like  So, the next night, we have a friend that works at the concierge desk in the Dolphin. We asked her what was up, and she said it didn't involve her, but the housekeeping workers. Thats all I know.... And I didn't see the picket this weekend??? Wow, it must have been pretty bad...

I was in the area yesterday. Police had the road in front of the resorts blocked off. Helecopters were constantly positioned over the resorts to keep an eye on the activity.

Its hard to say..if they negotiate a contract by then...you will be fine...call and check on your reservation..talk to the folks and ask how this will afftect you and your familys stay?

It might not have much impact..I am sure they have scabs covering the work, (sad but true)..while the others picket....

They usually fly in managers from other regions to cover things for a strike situation.

That's what that plane's banner said!!! We were at the All Star and he kept flying back and forth while we were in the pool.... I guess it was a bit further away from me than it was from you, b/c I could hardly make out what it said...

I thought Disney was sorta like a no-fly zone? Am I wrong?

WDW is ok to fly in. A no-fly is something like Washington DC, expect flying in in out of the airports. Militery test ranges are a BIG no-fly zone. Anyway, Disney is ok to fly into as long your above 2,000 feet. I have done it before, it's a trip!

"Hundreds of Disney World Hotel Workers on Strike." FoxNews.com. What is wrong with that headline? Actually, two things. One it is the truth, but it is not the whole truth. Yes, the truth is that hundred of Disney World hotel workers are on strike, but, the whole truth is--so far-- is that they are only on strike at two hotels at Disney World, the Swan and the Dolphin.
The second thing wrong with it (IMHO) is that it is, what I call a "scare" headline. If you see it, you might immediately presume that it affects all the hotels at Disney World, and get scared, especially if you are planning on soon taking a trip to Disney World.
Now compare that headline with this headline from iWon. "Workers Strike at Two Disney World Hotels." See the difference between the two headlines. The one from iWon is closer to the truth, and second, if you see it, you won't immediately get scared that the strike is at all the hotels at Disney World.
I bring this up, because I find much of the news about Disney is like that headline from FoxNews.com. It is not totally accurate, and alot of it is scaremongering. (IMHO)
So, just a precautionary warning. Take much of what you read about Disney with the proverbial grain of salt. And enjoy!

Although a strike is not good for Disney World, I think its better if a strike is gonna happen that it is at a non-Disney hotel operated by someone else.
I think since it doesn't involve a Disney hotel, it might do less damage finanically and image-wise (although with WDW, people aren't exactly going to stop visting.)
What do you think? :lookaroun
