I was just watching the news and they just blew up a backpack left in front of Planet Hollywood. That is crazy something like that can happen in WDW.

What that somebody left a backpack behind?

They will blow up any package left unattended these days for safety, doesn't mean there was anything more than somebody's snacks and rain ponchos in there.

I've never heard of them blowing things up in WDW before. I know it happens but in the world seems rather extreme. What ever happened to bomb sniffing dogs.

They don't want the dogs getting blown up doing the sniffing! Just kidding--my guess would be that in today's age of evolving technology, there are now odorless bombs that dogs cannot detect.

Sounds reasonable. A year or two ago, my dad (being the colonel in the national guard he is) saw a suspicious looking briefcase by a dumpster, and alerted the police, which turned into a lockdown of the surrounding area, and they ended up evacuating us and blowing it up.... but there was nothing wrong. Someone was just too lazy to throw it into the dumpster.

So yeah, it's a "rather be safe than sorry" thing. That sort of stuff is a tipoff to guys who are trained for it. Sucks to be the person that left it there, though.

Just got back from DTD, I was trapped in the Marketplace because my car was over by Cirque and they weren't letting people get across the bridge from PI to Westside. Originally they just had the walkway between Planet Hollywood and the AMC back to the parking lot blocked but they expanded it when they decided to the blow the thing up.

I traveled all over North America in my last job for about 10 years. I flew about 4 days after 9/11 happened and had to go through O'hare Airport in Chicago. For those that don't know, O'Hare is the busiest airport in the world and just an unreal sea of people once you get into the terminals.

I remember landing those days after 9/11 and walking into the terminal and then just stopping in my tracks. As far as I could see in just about each direction...there were about 10 people. This was a weekday about 9AM when there would normally be thousands, if not tens of thousands of people. The police and the bomb dogs outnumbered the passengers 10 to 1.

Anyway, I remember stopping to go into the men's room and there was a briefcase on the sinks. It just sat there and noboby took it. Finally, some cop came in and said "Is this anybody's?" Nobody answered and we all just kind of looked over at him.

He said...quite angry..."Haven't any of you learned a thing? Even after the knock down the World Trade Center, nobody takes an unattended backpack or briefcase seriously! Everybody is just too busy and it will never happen to me!! Well...it happened people!!! WAKE UP!!!"

Will never forget that. He was so right on and people need to realize that there are some MESSED UP PEOPLE living on this planet that want to hurt you!

Blowing up and unattended backpack at Planet Hollywood is what happens post 9/11. And if you want to really really get scared about how vulnerable we all are, do a google search for TATP and see what that mess is all about.

I'm a long time fireman and have received quite a bit of specialized training regarding weapons of mass deststruction and IEDs. Its a scary scary world out there and it can all come crashing down on you courtesy of some few house hold products you can pick up at Home Depot.

Even worse than the suspicious package stopping me from getting to my car for a while was that Ghiradelli still isn't open.:fork:

Thanks for your story, we should all be on the lookout for suspicious items. Just too make sure everyone is aware though, Atlanta Hartsfield is the World's busiest airport.

Oh please! Everybody is overreacting to a practically non-existent threat. You have a greater chance of dying from a hangnail than being killed by a terrorist. Are there terrorists? Absolutely. Are they dangerous. Some are, definitely. But the chances of anything on the scale of 9/11 (which only happened because our gocvernment was asleep at the wheel) happening again are remote, even with the shredding of the Bill of Rights. If you people are scared, then stay home. Blowing up an unattended book bag is ridiculous.

I didn't know we had a gcovernment.......ugh yet another political war. So if the pope took a dump in the woods and no one was around to hear it and im "AFRAID" my coffee will get cold on my way to go to work, I should stay home?

-draws line in sand-

-in family guy old pedophile voice- you shall not pass

On the other end, I do approve of the security precautions; no one ever can be too careful really.

So do you volunteer to go around the country checking out all the abandoned packages?

My vote is for fosse to inspect all packages heck would make my job a lot easier

Would not have to attend anymore WMD classes , not have to use Haz mat suits that roast you when your in them and not have to carry anymore drugs to counter act chemical or bio weapons heck again makes my job easy

WDW has its own K9 unit with bomb sniffing dogs. Security does take unattended packages seriously, and CMs are instructed to call in any bag left unattended. 99.999999% of the time, it's just a backpack somebody forgot about or stashed in the bushes while they went on a ride, but like others have said, Disney would rather be safe than sorry.

How about we just leave them be.

I'm pretty certain that we'd have exactly....

....wait for it....

....almost there....

....getting warmer....

....I can feel it!....

....and....

....NONE OF THEM EXPLODING!

Common sense would dictate that with all of the "security" in place now, knowing full well that terrorists, while "evil", aren't stupid, would not attack in the ways they've previously attacked us or how they attack smaller targets.

What this means is. The bag exploding is nothing more than security theater here to make sure Ma and Pa Kettle can sleep well at night. Nothing more.

This is almost as bad as the TSA.

So honestly, how many of the packages you've diffused or help to diffuse have actually contained any explosives? How many times has the Haz Mat suit actually protected you, or have you had to use the anti chemical/bioweapon drugs outside of training.

1, 0, 1/2?

Enlighten me, since I'm genuinely curious
