A couple of former contestants have books coming out soon.

First is Parvati, who wrote a memoir. I just preordered a signed up. I'm not super interested in the content of the book, to be honest, but I want the signature. It will be the 4th signature I have of a Survivor winner. You can preorder here: https://www.parvatishallow.com/

The other is Stephen Fishbach who is publishing a fiction novel about a reality contestant. You can preorder here: https://stephenfishbach.com/

According to Survivor's Instagram, they're dropping the Survivor 50 cast on Wednesday! They put the message across three separate posts and videos saying, (Survivor 50 logo), "Cast", "Wednesday".

A bottom tier season, but a deserving winner

I think it was seen as a somewhat boring and straight forward series of votes, but I still think time will be a bit kinder to it.

One good point I saw made was that people felt Eva going on the journey and not needing to win another advantage was a waste of air time. It actually had some impact in that had she gone for the Knowledge is Power, it's entirely likely she uses it against the fabricated Shauhin idol and that entire plan goes sideways.

If one watches that play out back to back it is possibly seen as a relevant part of the season.

Well, the finale played out mostly predictably. I did not see Joe coming in third place.

I did think they might have been leading to a "surprise" Joe win during the Jury speaks segment, as he was downplayed there.

The final tribal was actually a fun edit. They built to the big Kyle reveal in suitably dramatic fashion. There were several moments I was wondering why he hadn't brought it up yet.

Are they really going to bring Joe back? I guess he's the type who is popular to a more casual viewer, but what more can he bring?

Coming up: the Survivor 50 cast reveal and I expect 20,000 hours of pre-season podcast coverage for the first returnee season in a long time.

Survivor 49 I guess?

Bur first, Australian Survivor vs The World. July I think.

A predictable finale, but many of them are.

I rolled my eyes at Mitch a bit when he said now is the time to vote out Joe... buddy, that was like the last 4 votes for you, but you chose not to. And no regrets? I can think of one or two.

Kamilla played a great game that would have been highlighted a lot more had she won. I would love to see her come back, as I think she was on the wrong season. She did well, but I'd like to see what she could accomplish if she had other strategists around her. The way she lost in fire wasn't ideal, and she definitely panicked.

I was really shocked that Joe came in third. I've never had my jaw drop for a 3rd place finalist before... I wasn't even paying attention to the winner because I was so surprised. Rob has a theory that they glorified him because they're bringing him back for 50. He's a likable guy, but outside of challenges doesn't bring much to the season. He's the Colby/Ozzy type, but with worse confessionals.

Going hand in hand with Joe getting third, I was surprised Eva got second. The super fans were convinced she was a zero vote finalist, which I'm glad we didn't get one of those this season. But Eva had a really good final tribal council, and I think she swayed the couple that voted for her. When they showed her second vote, I thought that maybe she was going to win. Ultimately, she didn't have enough going for her, other than her argument that she would be a unique winner.

Kyle definitely deserved the win, and I'm going to be honest... I felt like this was a strong possibility for a long time. I probably had more eyes on him because he was my preseason winner pick (woo, go me!), but it felt like he was a winner. He was a very well-rounded player, and I think he could do well in almost any season. He's strong enough, social enough, and strategic enough, without being too much of any of them. He reminds me of a more interesting Tommy, which funnily enough is another preseason winner pick of mine.

I think my favorite moment from this entire season was Kamilla and Kyle communicating at the final Tribal, where Kamilla says, "I got you." I loved that so much. I loved their relationship. Kamilla viewed herself in Kyle, and she really wanted him to win because she wanted to credit their game, which was really good. We've never seen such a hidden relationship before, and they played it beautifully.

Overall, this season was pretty slow. It may be better on a rewatch, as many of the lesser ones are, but it's definitely landing at the bottom of the New Era rankings. I felt like the editing was off in some way, but I can't quite pinpoint it.

I do think there are some fun players this season, but overall it felt like a bore. There aren't many I'm dying to see back. My top probably being Kamilla. Her confessionals were great, when she actually got one.

Outside of Kamilla, Thomas is probably my next biggest want. I wouldn't mind Shauhin, either. From the premerge, I'd like to see Kevin, because I felt like he got a raw deal and would've been really fun. I wouldn't oppose Kyle, but don't need to see it again. Outside of that, not too many.

I'll put my rankings together in the next post.

Here are my rankings...

I have Survivor 48 ranked as the 44th best season, behind South Pacific and ahead of Nicaragua. These can change quickly as time passes.

I have Kyle ranked at the 20th best winner, right behind Cochran, and right ahead of Chris Daugherty.

My highest ranked player is Kyle, coming in at #33 in my all-time player rankings. Other notable players include... Kamilla at #91, Shauhin at #124, Joe at #125, and Eva at #218.

I'd love to see them borrow an idea from Survivor SA and do a returnee season with a tribe of pre-mergers versus post-mergers.

The current pre-merge, by design, makes for surprising boots where players have very little room to maneuver. Give some of them a second chance.

I've been saying this for a while. There are so many great characters and players to choose from. Just look at someone like Kelley Wentworth. She's a legend. Unfortunately, you need to get brought back pretty soon after being a premerge boot, or you're forgotten and never going to get a shot. Players like Brice and J'Tia from Cagayan would be so much fun on another season. And then you have the gamers like Thomas and Bianca. Ali from HHH was widely viewed as a great player, and things just didn't break her way. I remember really liking Stephanie Johnson in Ghost Island, but she got Pagonged out. Reem would be amazing. So many options with so many different archetypes.

what if.... 😜

If Eva had lost the fire challenge and final three were Kyle, Kamilla and Joe, who would have won? Is it possible that Eva winning fire cost Joe the game?

Joe for sure gets two votes, when you add Eva's vote. How about the two votes for Eva - would those have gone to Joe, or Kyle or Kamilla? What about the four who voted for Kyle - would those votes remain as is, or have been split between Kyle and Kamilla? If Joe got three votes (Eva plus one more), and the other votes were split between Kyle and Kamilla, then we have a tie between Joe and someone. Joe would probably loose in a tie, as I think Kyle/Kamilla would vote for the other in a tie-breaker. But if Joe got Eva plus two more votes, then he wins.

Another scenario: what if Kyle and Kamilla had tied for the most votes? Then, Joe would have picked the winner. Who would he have picked? I think he would have picked Kamilla, only because he might have felt Kyle betrayed the alliance.

So, of course, I had to ask ChatGPT who would have won this scenario. It came up with Kamilla as the winner, based on gameplay.

The post finale interviews have been interesting... seems like the Jury did not like any of the final three.

Kamilla said in her interview she was prepared to come in hard and even lie to take more credit for moves Kyle made. It would have been interesting to see.

If the jury really didn't like the final three she would be in the always strong position of being the one finalist without blood on her hands.

She can also cite times she tried to work with the minority to shake things up. An argument used by Sandra in HvV.

It's hard to gauge because the informal poll at the end is based on an alternate reality. It's also possibly Kamilla played above and beyond the best game and we don't know because the edit focused more on the winner.

Here is a dropped cast leak for 50... it's not confirmed, but the source that dropped it has apparently been 100% correct about other casts before, and people are saying it's likely 100% accurate. There are 22 players, so it's assumed two are alternates.

My review...

Joe - Pass.
Charlie - Yes.
Jonathan - Meh.
Colby - Meh.
Ozzy - No.
Q - Meh.
Emily - Yes.
Stephanie - Yes.
Cirie - Yes.
Chrissy - Meh.
Genevieve - Yes.
Angelina - Yes.
Christian - YES!
Coach - Meh.
Devens - Meh.
Mike White - YES!
Kyle - Pass.
Jenna Lewis - Meh.
Aubry - Yes.
Kamilla - Meh. (recency fatigue of 48)
Tiffany - Yes, but for 50 is a stretch.
Dee - Yes.

I was much more excited about the previously rumored cast, but it appears some things have changed since then. Far too many New Era players. And if people like Amanda, Penner, and Elisabeth were really interested in coming back, why did you not take them???

Don’t need to see Colby, Coach, Cirie, Ozzy, Jenna Lewis or Aubrey again. And you’re right about too many season 48 players. Would have liked to see Dom Abatte, Gabby Pascusi, and some players from Millenials v Gen X.

I'm not sold on Joe, but at least in his exit interview he said he'd play differently depending on the vibe.

Getting Mike White back would be a coup. However, he played for the experience, not to win. What more does he get out of playing Survivor again? Will everyone suck up to him in the hopes of getting the White Lotus cameo?

How much more can we really get out of people returning for a fourth time?

Cesternino is such an obvious choice for the podcast fans, also known as some of the most hardcore fans. A very glaring omission.

I wonder if Mike would play differently this time, knowing he can win.

And Rob is a huge loss. He would have been so much fun, and really never got a true second chance with how early he left in All Stars.

In a show where people are worried about being a successful lawyer, it seems crazy to think of someone as successful as Mike White winning Survivor.

He could give the money to charity, but even then he's taking away money from a player who actually needs it.

He had his chance to play just for the fun of it, and I think that's enough. Even if he would be fun to have back as a character.
