Survivor is back two weeks from tomorrow! I've been listening to the preseason interviews on RHAP. So far I like the people I've heard from.

One week from today, Survivor is BACK! I still have a couple hours of a preseason podcast to get through before I make my winner pick, but I am highest on these players so far...

Chanelle
Romeo
Hai

I think Drea could be good, too, but not sure if her preseason stuff gives me winner vibes. Rocksroy is similar. I could see Drea and Rocksroy being close allies, and I think they're starting on the same tribe.

I also really like Tori, but am afraid she'll get the Parvati/Kelley Wentworth treatment. I've gone with those picks too often, and I always get burned. Sara was my female winner pick last season, and Molly was my female winner pick in 39.

Here are what I can remember of my winner picks since I started doing them. I've mainly done one male and one female winner pick, but have done a couple different style of picks over the years. And yes, I did go through all of the old Survivor threads to see who I actually picked.

31 - Vytas
32 - No winner pick
33 - M: Adam, F: Figgy
34 - M: Malcolm, F: Andrea
35 - Winner: Ashley, Runner-Up: Desi
36 - M: Brendan, F: Kellyn
37 - M: Dan, F: Alison
38 - Returnee: Kelley, Newbie: Victoria
39 - M: Tommy, F: Molly
40 - M: Jeremy, F: Parvati
41 - M: Ricard, F: Sara

In summary, I've gotten two male picks right with Adam and Tommy. I've guessed 7 pre-merge boots as winners. One was the first boot. Two second boots. Zero runners-up.

Once I finish the last podcast, I'll make my official winner picks for 42.

Here are my official winner picks, one male and one female.

Male: Hai
Female: Chanelle

I feel like Hai is the middle ground between social and strategic. He isn't going to be so likable that nobody will take him to the end, but he also isn't standing out as a massive strategic threat. I feel like Chanelle is a little riskier because I do think she could be seen as too strategic and not social enough. I just didn't see another female that had as much as she did. This cast is really hard for me to peg down. I don't see a major front runner, and there aren't many I view as sure-fire early boots.

Interesting fact... today is Lauren, Devon, and Patrick's birthday. They all started on the same tribe together. Literally half their tribe had March 6th birthdays.

What are the rules of discussing episodes? I didn't want to say anything until I knew it was okay to do so. I saw that nobody had posted since Sunday so I was wondering whether it was due to restrictions of discussing until after episodes aired.

Essentially, once the episode has aired on the east coast, it's free game to post thoughts and opinions about it here. If you haven't watched it yet, just avoid this thread until then. There will be spoilers.

If there are any leaked spoilers about episodes that haven't aired yet, obviously don't post those.

Preseason press coverage is fair game to talk about. As long as it's officially been released, go for it.

Gotcha! I will make it a point to either post very late (if I am up and not doing something else) or the next day to be safe. Just gonna say that this season seems like it is going to be fun and there are plenty of big personalities.

It was overall a decent first episode. The cast seems very strong, but the outcome was a little dull.

I liked the opening dilemma in the challenge where three players had to make a decision together. It's a fun way to add more layered social dynamics and strategy. The whole mud and fake blood thing was over the top, but I loved it. The mud is one thing, but fake blood?! What happens when you get back to camp and your tribe realizes you have no wounds? Lydia's response was hilarious... "you're bleeding A LOT!" I think I'm going to like Lydia. She's fun. Daniel paying tribute to Stephenie LaGrossa was also not something I expected to see tonight.

I'm glad we got to see the tribes choose the triangle problem this season. Although I did notice they changed the rules to make it more likely they'd choose Savvy over Sweat. This season, only one player got to carry water, but you got two guesses at the triangle. Last season was the opposite: two players to carry water, but only one triangle guess. And Jenny rocked that problem. I'm really liking Jenny so far.

The return of Shipwheel Island is not my favorite. Especially in the same exact way as last season. I'm hoping the advantages will kind of get brushed aside at some point like they did last season.

The Jackson situation feels a little scummy. I didn't like how Jeff put the blame on Jackson for not sharing his medical information until the last second. There are alternates in place for that. I'm assuming even with covid protocols, they had a plan in place for alternates at the last minute. Production shouldn't have allowed him to play. It felt like they let him go on, just to share his story. It feels a little gross, but also it's a really important story to share. But also, Jackson should have disclosed that information ahead of time. If he had, production could have told him he can play again in a year after he's had a more healthy environment to get off the medication. It seemed poorly handled from all sides. But again, I'm grateful we got to see his story.

That immunity challenge was brutal. I was exhausted just watching it from my couch. I'm not sure what they were thinking putting that blue tribe together. The two scrawniest players, and neither of the two strongest ones? Maybe they'll get it together, but yikes.

Zach played everything wrong coming back from the challenge. Don't apologize! It may feel like you lost it, but you were already way behind by the time you got to the puzzle. Don't give them that easy option. It seemed like his lack of confidence and life experience played a part in his early exit. Good on him for trying the Shot in the Dark, though. Everyone else had to be as nervous as can be.

And now some thoughts on a couple players...

Drea - She's very blunt, but in a fun way. She doesn't even recognize it, but she just cuts to the chase.

Rocksroy - Does not quite have the social skills early on. He had a "get off my lawn!" moment already. It's hard for some people to realize that just because you're older, does not make you wiser or more correct than someone else.

Jenny - She seems awesome. I really like her so far. Through one episode she may be my favorite. Obviously that's subject to change.

Tori - She is doing her best Angelina impression, and I'm here for it. She's going to be entertaining.

Maryanne - She seems quirky and fun. I'll be interested to see her gameplay and strategy.

I can't wait to see how this season unfolds. It seems like an interesting, likable cast.

It's more of the same from last season. The prisoner's dilemma that isn't. Lots of advantages. A lot of influence in terms of putting different people together for little side stories.

Which is to say, whatever one felt about last season, they're going to feel the same way here. It is what it is.

It's as always, ultimately about the cast, and this one seems interesting so far.

The puzzle was odd. A puzzle is supposed to be an equalizer but from where I'm sitting it wasn't. By dividing it into three sections there was minimal chance any team would catch up.

Meanwhile, I'm still trying to catch up with Survivor Australia because I was out of town when it started airing, and the three episodes a week schedule creates a backlog.

I'd add to this, is one dilemma with Survivor is whether or not discussing the edit is going into spoiler territory. People can be very good at assessing a winner or front runner based on their edit, screen time, confessional count, etc.

Last season I thought they did a good job highlighting the key players at a given time, as opposed to focusing on a winner edit. Which itself was controversial as many people felt the win came out of nowhere to a degree. But I digress...

It's nice to see someone like Maryanne on Survivor. She is clearly on the AU spectrum. Not sure if she's the first but the most pronounced. Unfortunately, I don't see her long for the game. She was VERY heavily edited the first episode and could be this season's JD.

Last season taught me not to make any predictions. A few people stood out as big characters and I have my favorites already (Maryanne, Mike, and Jenny). But when Erika was 1-3 confessionals away from having a very strong edit last season, it's a "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me." situation with editing. 1-3 confessions can decide whether a person is an obvious winner or a winner. (@Wendy Pleakley you are correct about Erika and she's one I would have rooted for from the start, but her post-merge was great. I NEVER had her on my list and pretty much had her eliminated due to pre-merge edit. But give 1 or 2 key confessionals pre-merge about her relationship with Heather and she would have been in the running throughout the season).

But, like I said, I like Maryanna, Mike, and Jenny the most. The winner, however, will probably be someone who had 1 or 2 confessionals and was probably mostly hidden.

I don't like sappy stories... I fast forward through those in the Olympics, Ironman Hawaii, and Survivor. Just not my thing. I don't understand how Jackson even made the cut to be on Survivor, other than to share a story.

Jenny is my fav so far - I like her personality. But, I fear she is too smart and others will fear her and vote her out early. I hope I am wrong with that prediction.

Too early, I think, to predict a winner. An OK first episode, but not one to get me excited about the season.

They talked a little bit about his application process in the premiere, but he applied back in the early 20s. I believe it was during the casting for Redemption Island. He didn't apply again after that, and randomly got called for 42.

It's interesting to me how casting works. Do they randomly decide to go back and look at old applications? Were they purging old auditions during quarantine and rediscovered his? Was he not the "mactor" type they wanted back then, but fit the "everyday person" they're going for now? How many old applications do they hold onto, and for how long? Are there people who applied once for season 2 that have never been thrown out? Is it only digital video applications they still have access to? I have so many questions.

Also, Jackson did some of the exit press for the season, but not all of it. In his exit interview with Dalton Ross he said it was too late for an alternate by the time he told them about his medication. The alternates had all left. He said he didn't even think about the medication being an issue because he thought he would be totally off it by the start of the show. Apparently getting off took longer than he and his doctor had discussed. He said he had two doses left to go when filming started. It sounds like production was dealt a difficult decision. Either start off with 17 players and alter all of their plans for the season format, or start him out and see how he did after a couple days. It was also hard because Fiji was beginning to reinstate international travel bans as covid cases were rising right at the start of season 42. They probably wanted to get the alternates out before they would be affected.

Something does seem off. Jackson had to have known this would be a potential issue for him. He should have disclosed the information right from the start, even if he thought he'd be off it well before he went to Fiji.

I am enjoying the extra camp life scenes we're getting. I'm sure they won't last for long, but I'm thankful we're getting them at all.

The first half of the episode was a masterclass in why you shouldn't share your advantages with others. In the past, you could leverage them to gain trust. In modern Survivor, it doesn't work that way. They just paint a target on you, and telling others pretty much begs them to manipulate you. Drea shouldn't have spilled the beans on her extra vote. I think the women's alliance could have lasted without that. It at least would have had a better chance. And Mike shouldn't have spilled the beans to Daniel. Both Drea and Mike used it as a way to gain trust with people they didn't have strong bonds with yet. I think you have to build those strong bonds first, before giving up that information.

I think it's very smart how Daniel is approaching Mike's beware advantage. His thinking transcends anything the season 41 cast did with the same advantage, and even what the entire Survivor community way able to come up with. It's brilliant to try and negate all idols by convincing Mike he's safe and doesn't need to activate it and tell everyone else he has it. Daniel has a good read on Mike and realizes he's someone he can control. I'm also really liking the duo of Daniel and Chanelle. It's very early on, but they seem to be this season's Shan and Ricard.

The blindfold challenges are always fun. It was an interesting choice to put Jonathan in the puzzle position. It's ultimately why they lost, but it was extremely close. It was a great and exciting challenge.

The decision between Marya and Maryanne was a somewhat dull decision. I feel like there had to be another reason they voted off Marya. They only talked about how loyal she was and how frantic Maryanne was. Maybe it came down to Maryanne having better relationships, but the reasons we saw on TV did not make much sense based on the outcome.

I do find it interesting that we've had two votes, and both times we got a shot in the dark from the person voted off. It just shows how hard it is to blindside someone when it's a unanimous vote. You almost just have to risk that the shot in the dark isn't going to work.

Through two episodes, it really doesn't seem like there are any front runners. A lot of players have shed all expectations I've had coming into the season based on their preseason interviews. Daniel doesn't seem as frantic. Jonathan doesn't seem like he's as big of an Ozzy type like he said. Rocksroy has been the drill sergeant after being deemed the "most normal Survivor ever" based on his interviews. I feel like there are more players veering from their expectations this season than past seasons.

Overall, I'm enjoying this goofy, quirky cast. I'm excited to see some more gameplay from them. So far it's been two straightforward votes. I'm interested in seeing some of the gamers come out as we get further into the season.

This season is already fantastic! The editors must have learned a thing or two.

Right now, I have six people I am looking at closely: Mike (too obvious?), Chanelle, Jonathan, Omar, Lindsey, and Swati.

I love Maryanne, but I cannot see someone with her editing winning. I fear she may be gone soon.
