You started with five movies with 10 points each for a total of 50 points. The game redistributes the points among the different movies, one point at a time, but it doesn't add or subtract from the total number of points in play, right? At the end of the game, the winning movie should have 50 points, yet there are currently only 38 points in play.

No, how it is usually played (at least here) is that you add one to heal, and subtract one to hurt.

Right. You add one and subtract one for a net gain among all the contestants of zero. Therefore, you should end with the same number of points as you began with.
