I've been a dis freak since I was five. 16 visits later I have seen and done a lot. however, this year i tried something with my girlfriend that i heard about, but never tried, surfing at typhoon lagoon. It was amazing. We arrived at the lagoon around 530am met six other really cool (but nervous) people from all over the US (youngest was a girl who was 16, oldest was a man 50). after brief instruction, we were in the water. two and a half hours later both our shoulders were on fire from paddling but we had ridden some serious waves. i was able to get up and finish seven or eight times. (my girlfriend was like 10, she was better:brick:) we are both crazy surf fans and can't wait to do it next year. I recommend this to anyone looking to do something a little different that you'll love.

I am an East Coast surfer here in southern Jersey. I wanted to try this, but was afraid it's not really what I am after.

-Must everyone take the instructional part?
-Are the boards made of foam?
-Did you hear or see anything advertising surfing in the Lagoon in the mornings or after closing, without the lessons?

^^ Thanks for posting all the information...I've thought about doing this myself; one of those things that's on the "Someday I'd love to try..." list. Sounds like a blast!

They offer three different size foam boards for you to choose from( small, med, large. i wish i could remember the exact sizes). and yes the instruction is mandatory. they don't even turn the wave pool on till it's over. It's wicked quick though so I wouldn't stress. there was actually a guy who surfed before who just hung out for a 1/2 talking with instructors who have competed in some serious tournaments. The cement floor can be a problem so they set up some floats that once you reach them you must jump off on to your back, so as long as you do that there will be no scraping of your skin. The floats are set far enough so you can ride a nice wave for awhile. Also, two you can bring anyone with you to watch for free so they can grab some crazy pics and laugh as you wipe out. Plus Disney photo pass photographers are there and they take about fifty or so pics. some of them are so good i actually look like i know what i'm doing.
