Superficial Requirements

I've never (seriously) thought about working at WDW, although I'd never pass up the chance to do so. But I do have a couple of questions.

I have a goatee. How would that go? I can shave off part, but I'd still have to retain a moustache. Is facial hair allowed period? I'm not looking to be way out in the public, but even if standing "guard" at a ride entrance, would that be feasible? If not, other than emptying dumpsters, what could I be qualified for?

I have 2 tats. Both can be covered with a (long) short sleeve shirt, at least down to the elbows. How would that go? Most short sleeve shirts I wear still show the very bottom (tail) of the cobra on my arm.

Breaks. I see, especially on RnRC that I ride multiple times in a row, different CMs, and then see some back a few rides later. So are breaks a frequent? I smoke, only reason I ask. Not like I wanna duck out every 5 minutes or anything, but at least once an hour, I need a smoke.

ok.. goatee, no. Moustache, as long as you keep it clean, sure. Don't tell casting about the tats, and make sure they're covered when they hire you, and that's not a problem.. also keep them covered on the job. As for the smoking, if you can get it up to 1 every 4 hours, you'll be set. There's no way you can get a break every hour unless you're entertainment

Cool.

Yeah I can usually go longer without smoking if my time is occupied. And hopefully I'm getting closer to quitting.

Hey Mobile,

Mktiggerman covered most of it, but thought i'd clarify your break question for you. The reason you see people in different places at RnRC is because they use what's know as the Cast Deployment System (CDS). It's a computer program that rotates cast member to all areas of the attractions. If you're not on that, you'll be on a handwritten rotation as i was, still in every position though.

Hope this helps,
Brian

one thing though, only attractons, merchandise, and SOME foods use CDS. The rest of the company abstains from it

As I was returning last August, movements were being made throughout a few more areas to incorporate it. Right now it's in its test stage with attractions, merch, and foods, but it will incorporate all areas once certain adjustments are made. There's differences in local CDS and Global CDS. I know the front desk at some resorts use CDS, however, only on a local level to determine rotation, but do not however use Global CDS as of yet.

I think most foods find it hard to use CDS because of the limitations some of the people may have and what positions they could and couldn't do, ect. Correct me if I am wrong Rob but I think SSFF in the Land was trying it for awhile? Or maybe I'm thinking of Liberty Inn.. *eeks* brain not working.

Anyways ***thread drift*** I didn't really like CDS because ... CDS didn't like me very much. Sometimes when my levels weren't set right it would have me greeting at Image all day (I was trained to do other things) or when I was doing merch it had me on tasks for an hour once... (I think this was actually Image merch but it has also happened to me at Mousegears lol).

CDS kind of stinks. You never know WHEN your break is coming until someone just randomly pops up with the surprise info for ya. And you can conceivably end up leaving late to go home, if someone before you took a little longer on their break! ARGH!

I dealt with it in Attractions, and all I can say is: thank god there's no possible way to implement it in entertainment. We tried it for 3 days with MK greeters a while back, and we crashed it repeatedly to the point of making it worthless to us.

They tended to use it to set who was where, just like in anywhere else. Between the desk itself, phones room, and the office in the backstage area.

Hey all,

Granted it isn't a perfect system, but neither was the rotation we used at my work location. We had the same problem with people on breaks, leaving late, all those sorts of things. There were many times they had to take me off the rotation all together while I was training someone or working with a group checking in or out of the resort. That through a wrench into it each an every time. CDS has yet to make it easier for anyone so far, but as I said, it's still in its infancy. I say give it some time.

Liberty Inn tried it. I don't know if they still have it or not. It's not a good system to use in the restaurants. The system is terribly flawed for food & beverage.

Some people aren't made to handle certain positions. The system sent people on breaks one hour into shifts. There is no way to gauge the impact of crowds in the system. We had 2 people on break when a rush of people would come in and be shorthanded.

I can understand where it could work with attractions, possibly merch, but food, custodial, and other departments wouldn't work in my opinion.

Well I KNOW they weren't using it on New Years Eve. I had the really late shift (till closing). Maybe if we WERE On CDS I'd have gotten my breaks LOL. As it was I was there at like... 4 I think it was I didn't get a break at ALL until midnight. (which means I hadn't had anything to eat and was on my feet for about 6 hours straight). But that was New Year's Eve and that was a special case (you know how crowded that place gets New Years Eve? it as a NIGHTMARE).

I don't know... CDS is just... fustrating. Also... maybe it's cause people are flawed and therefore the program can't determine those flaws. How many times I went to go look for people the CDS told me were in a certain place and could NOT find them I do not know.

About those tats...

With apologies for interrupting the other discussion, I wanted to suggest to MobileBadBoy that WDW may not be the best option for his career move.

My feeling is, when you go into a new employment situation, you want to be 100% straightforward with your new company. If you know in advance that tattoos aren't allowed and you got 'em, well, that isn't the place for you. Why put yourself in a position where day 1 you are hiding something?

Since I understand you "never (seriously) thought about working at WDW"... maybe you won't see that as a great loss!

More employers would have difficulty with hourly smoke breaks. If that's important to you, most hospitality industry jobs may not meet your requirements.

Mobile bad boy, it's great that you thought enough to ask about WDW opportunities. I hope that means you enjoy WDW and will visit again soon... long sleeves or short! You asked honest questions and I trust you understand this is just an attempt to give you the same kind of reply... point for point. I don't personally see WDW as a 'right-fit' opportunity for you, but wish you complete success... and happiness in finding that place to meet your needs.

Well, the thing is, I didn't know. That's why I asked. Since I've seen a couple of people down there over my last 2 trips that do have tats (they've seen mine, and shown me theres), I had assumed as long as they're covered at all times, it wouldn't be a problem, which mine can be easily with a short sleeve shirt, just as there's were.

I never said it was important to me, and even previously said that it's not necessary, especially if my time is being occupied (as well as saying that I'm working towards quitting).

Sorry, MobileBadBoy, I made some wrong assumptions.

It was good that you asked those questions. Having been around Disney so much, I make the mistake of thinking everybody knows all about it!

Good luck with quitting. I know that's a tough go. The only reason I didn't get hooked years ago was that I didn't know how to look 'cool' when smoking. My friends made fun of me when I lit up.

I wasn't trying to sound so defensive cm1988, I get that way when I just wake up. But other than the outer goings of the parks, which I know quite well, I don't keep up with the day to day of a CM. :)

I know folks down there that have tats, and as I said, assumed as long as they were covered it was ok, I asked anyway. I never thought it was "cool" to smoke either, just got my curiousity up at an early age by seeing some relatives smoke (who I used to yell at about it 24/7) and 13 years later I'm yelling at myself.
