Super rare Magic Kingdom construction footage

That was great...and I haven't seen the whole thing yet. Did you notice at the beginning on the big model there was Thunder Mesa and, presumably, the Western River Expedition?

Awesome video! Thanks for posting.

The end where it's black and white and all construction-y (proper term, of course) and then tink comes and brings it to modern day MK = awesome sauce. Loved it.

Great footage.

I just have to laugh though, at 2:46 when the guy with seemingly no fall-protection whatsoever jumps from one Monorail beam to the other, and as if that wasn't enough, is jumping into the path of a moving Monorail. I'd love to see someone get away with that today without being fired!

What awesome footage!
I especially liked the Liberty Tree oak (pre-graft, I assume) being trucked in.
I wonder what it looked like when they flooded the 7 Seas lagoon. Did they bulldoze all that swamp grass before letting the water in?

Great footage.

I loved that too.

Its odd to me to see those late 60's styled trucks carrying the monorails which STILL look modern and futuristic (to me)..like a time warp or something

Great videos! Thanks!

Two things...

On the first one, I thought it was cool-looking how the shops on Main Street look so "square" and "normal" (before their facades were built). I knew that the 2nd and 3rd floors of the shops were just that (facades) but to actually see them as a typical square building was cool!

On the second video, I've only so far watched the "part 1" video, but it stood out to me how often Walt called everyone coming to WDW "tourists". HA!

Thanks again for these; they're awesome!

Wow, that's so amazing! I so wish I could have been a part of Magic Kingdom's construction... if I had a time machine, the first place I would go would be MK back in 1970-71... and then maybe to 1986 to see the filming of Captain EO :D

That footage, while rarely seen, isn't hard to find if you are looking for it.. It was included as part of the promotional materials for Epcot Center in 1982, for the grand opening.. The original video was called "Floridas Disney Decade" and includes a LOT of additional footage..

I can provide a copy to anyone that wants it.. Not sure the best way to transfer it around? it's about a gig uncompressed..

Also, I should add that the disney decade footage has sound/audio/narration

All i want is for Disney to put together a doc about the construction of Disney World. I actually got a response from Disney and they said there is not enough interest for them to produce a doc about it.

Our household would love a documentary like that. Are there any books about the construction? I've always thought of it as the untold tale of WDW.

That's too bad. Maybe for the 50th. :brick:

It's so weird to see it being built. It's so well done that it almost feels like it's just always been there. Never built, just always there.

Great Stuff

Ah, fun to watch. Note that the very large rock formation seen at the far end of the model at the beginning of the footage is Thunder Mesa, home of the probably the most famous of all "lost" attractions, the Western River Expedition. At a glance, it almost looks like BTMR.
