Hey Ya'all!

Im headed for a 7day eastern Caribean cruise Soon. I wanted to Know what kid of SPF i should wear. Im a fair skined person, but Im going tanning before we go so I'll have Base tan, so I shouldnt burn. I usually go to the beach everyday here in NJ n I wear an 8 and Im fine, but i herad the sun is brutal there. My mom wants me to wear a 30 but I think I wont get tan If I do that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Susan

PS-Sry if I didnt post this in the right area, but I thought it went with crusies!

The minimum I wear is 30. I am very afraid of skin cancer.
The sun in the Caribbean will certainly be different than in NJ. Combine that with the salty water at the beach and you will be dieing if you don´t hydrate your skin. You are going to be there for 7 days so you have plenty of time to get a nice tan without burning. The secret is to start with about 20 mins. of exposure the first day and then increase it gradually without forgetting the sunblock. If you do it right, the tan will stay a lot longer than when you get all red and burn, and it will be nicer.

Have a safe and fun trip!

wear the 30.

Mom is right.

On my first trip to Florida (with my H.S. band in 1975 when "Magic Kingdom" really WAS "Disney World"), there were signs all over the hotel pool:

the sun in Florida is tropical sun. You will burn more quickly than in more northern cities. Exercise caution...blah blah blah

Point is--I was 16 and didn't believe it. What words describe the pain from the sunburn I got? (even with a good "base tan")

The other issue is that on a cruise, you'll have the sun reflected off the water, which also intensifies it.

If you're so worried about your tan, skip the sunscreen in the morning and put it on at 11 AM when it really begins to get bright.

SPF 15 is more than enough, if you buy a quality product that includes UVA / UVB and IR protection. Anything above SPF 15 is just hype in that the SPF is based upon hours in the sun. You couldn't spend 30 hours in the sun, therefore a SPF of 30 blocks no more sunlight than a SPF 15 contrary to beliefs based upon advertising.

Can you give some examples of what a "quality product" is? I thought they were all the same.

I used 30 (Hawaiian Tropic) for the three day cruise. The only day I spent any length of time in the sun was at Castaway Cay. I'm also fair skinned (I usually burn, freckle, peel). I actually got a tan without burning. I just made sure to keep the sunblock applied. I'd definitely go with the 30. That's my plan for the seven day I'm taking in June.

Have a wonderful cruise!!

I usually go with the 15 but when we went on the cruise i was using 30 except for the day we went out on the beach and then i used 45. the spf is based on hours like Woody13 said but its not 15 hours for spf 15 its figured out based on the color of your skin, SPF 15 generally last for 4 hours on most people in most sun (which is why i choose 30 so i don't have to put more on all the time). but yea, have fun in the warmth!!

Everyone is different, and if you (or your mom) knows that you burn very easily, than a 30 will be fine, you WILL tan with a 30 on if you are out long enough. You could wear a 75 and still tan if you were out long enough. Do you know how sunblock works? I never burn, even when I am out all day on the lakes here in Michigan or out all day in sunny Florida. At the end of the day, people leave so red and burnt, and I'm still pasty white. I don't ever wear sunblock in any area other than my shoulders, which do seem to burn a bit. But I wear a 15, and I am fine. But, like I said, everyone is different, and you know yourself, none of us do!

As Crazygirly said, everyone is different. When i did the cruise, i took an assortment of spf. i had a 4, 8, and 15, plus a special lip balm with a 30. Depending on what i was doing, would determine which spf to use. When on the beach i used a 15 on the tops of my feet. for some odd reason they always burn first and fastest. Usually i can get away with a 4 anywhere else. On the cruise i used an 8 for outside all day. If i was only going to be a few hours i would use a 4. And don't worry if you forget any sunscreen, there is general store on the ship.

a doctor once told me that anything over 15 was overkill. Whatever you decide to use make sure it is waterproof and put it on more than once a day. I too have that wonderful Irish skin and I usually burn first, freckle and then tan.

This is PARTIALLY true....SPF ratings are based on AVERAGE skin types.

People with more sensitive skin need higher SPF ratings
My wife who has extremely sensitive skin wears an SPF 48 and STILL gets burned if she's exposed too long to the sun.

Coppertone Sport seems to work well for us...it stays on even if you're active and playing alot in waterparks.
