Suggestion: New account limitations in political threads

With all the RCID stuff going on there's been a pretty noticable uptick in brand new accounts posting on threads - I'm sure the staff & mods are probably having to deal with deleting a lot that we're not seeing, and they're doing a great job of keeping on top of it.

I wonder if there needs to be something set up to prevent brand new accounts talking in political threads. MacRumors (who, like WDWMagic use XenForo) have a system in place where topics with a 'politics' flag are restricted to people who've been a member for a specific amount of time and have a certain number of posts, the idea being it stops people popping on, posting something that's an obvious rule break and then vanishing.

I know it really shouldn't be needed on a site about WDW, and I know theres a general 'no politics' rule so people shouldn't be posting about it anyway, but it's possibly something to consider at least as a short term option until things settle back down.

Thanks for the suggestion. We did have the same system back when we used to have a dedicated politics section, and surprisingly the biggest issue was not really with new users.

So far, things in the RCID have not been going too far astray, particularly from new users.

I think it would be worth re-considering now that the forums and that post in particular are making the national news.
It wouldn't surprise me at all to see a huge uptick and a lot of repetition.

It would be nice if we could start a new thread on this, and only allow "Well-Known Members" or those with certain Reaction Score or Points to discuss. That would cut down on some of the riff-raff, repetitiveness, and off-topic side trails that happen so frequently. I might even consider paying for something like that.

I was just thinking the same thing. As of this message, there are four threads in the WDW News and Rumors forum related to Disney's political/"culture war" issues, and a handful of others not directly related, but where things still tend to get political.

It might be worthwhile to merge them all into one giant thread.

Disagree.
The whole point of having separate threads is for discussing different topics.
The giant mega-thread on this issue is nearly 1000 pages now, and discussions are all over the place.
It would be nice if people would just stay on the topic that's being discussed.
