Strong Earthquake Strikes Central Calif.

PARKFIELD, Calif. - A strong earthquake struck Central California on Tuesday, and it was felt from San Francisco to the Los Angeles area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (news - web sites). There was no immediate report of injuries.

The quake, which struck at 10:15 a.m. PDT, had a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 and was centered 9 miles south of Parkfield. The area is 17 miles northeast of Paso Robles, scene of an earthquake that killed two people in December 2003.

An aftershock of 5.0 magnitude struck four minutes later.

Paso Robles police said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

"It rattled everything hanging on the walls and the chandelier was swinging. It didn't do any damage to our house. There were two shakers, one right after the other," said Ben Brown, who lives in Paso Robles.

The quake was felt along a 350-mile stretch, as far north as San Francisco and as far south as Santa Ana, southeast of Los Angeles, the geological survey said.

Parkfield, located on the San Andreas fault, is known as the earthquake capital of California.

A magnitude 5 quake can cause considerable damage and a magnitude 6 quake severe damage, though problems are generally far less severe in remote areas and areas with strong building codes.

I hope everyone is doing ok out there..... :(

Awwwww, baby eawthquake, how cute. :p

Seriouslly, in CA, I'm sure they're okay. While a 5.9 is certainly bigger than average, it's still nothing huge by California standards. :)

Well I do know they have felt rumbles over by Mt. St. Helens.. wonder if that is going to blow.

Nah, it won't. It's not the first time they've had trembles like this since the big eruption in 1980. They might get a little flow going, but nothing that'll do major damage.

Didn't feel it down here in Escondido either.

Earthquakes are unpredictable, but like everything else in life, you can't live your life afraid all the time! How much fun would that be?? :)

I find this no fair because the major Earthquakes in Illinois are barely noticable. I think we had like a 2.0 earlier this year.

 We have several of those per day here in SoCal.

Trust me, when a major quake hits you will no longer say no fair.

Never Felt A Thing Here In South San Francisco (strangely), Though My Dad Said He Felt It At Work..

I Heard, In Other News, That Scientists Were Exited For This Quake Since They've Been Waiting For One.. They Had Put Monitors On The San Andreas Fault And Got Very Good Data For Their Research..

Yes, and I'm hoping this was the "big" one that was predicted to hit this month...

Naw, I doubt it would have even been felt in Anaheim, let alone do any damage. It sounds like there really wasn't even any damage at th epicenter.

It's funny, I didn't hear much of the earthquake on the news.
