It really bugs me to see people saying "Disney is going to ruin Star Wars". First off, you haven't even seen it, so you can't judge it. Second off, JJ Abrams is directing Star Wars so if anybody is to blame about how Star Wars is, it's Abrams to blame. Do y'all agree?

I am not overly concerned about Disney ruining Star Wars. The have been doing a good job with Marvel so I am hoping they take the same path with Star Wars. I disagree with it ultimately being the directors fault if this goes badly. Some times it is but directors are often under a lot of pressure from studios and producer to make a movie a certain way, so it's not always the fault of the director.

Disney has nothing to do with Marvel films, most were made when Disney did not own them and I doubt they meddle now. The comment about watching Star Wars.... people not seeing them? Almost everybody agrees the first 3 episodes 4, 5, ... and even 6 were the best films.

I believe Episode 7 will be a blockbuster no matter how bad it is, but Episode 8... maybe not.

The one big plus is that Lucas will not be directing them. I think that Abrams is a way better director than Lucas. The action in the movies should be excellent and the visuals will be top notch. The big X factor to me is who will be writing the storyline. I thought that the story in episodes 4, 5 and 6 (with the exception of the Ewoks) was very good. In episodes 1 through 3, the storyline was ok at times.

Actor selection will also play a big part. One thing that Lucas did a terrible job of was picking the actors to play both young and old Anakin. And his direction of them was dreadful.

Lucas did a great job creating his world, but he ultimately had trouble thriving in it. I think that with good actors and a great story, Abrams will nail it out of the park.

Exactly this. The Marvel experience has shown that Disney can let a division thrive on its own without meddling significantly. That doesn't mean that Star Wars will work out well but it is a point in favor of that line of thought.

Disney has nothing to do with Marvel films, most were made when Disney did not own them and I doubt they meddle now.

The linked Marvel Cinematic Universe films (Iron Man/Avengers/Capt America/Thor/the second Hulk film) have all been made by Disney in an organized manner. Disney even had to reacquire the rights to some of the characters to make it happen (which is why, for example, Paramount gets billing on some of the films despite not being involved).

Disney have actively sought to get back the movie rights to all their characters, such that the only one not owned by Disney now are Spider-Man (owned by Sony in perpetuity in exchange for Disney getting the merchandise rights) and the X-men family/mutants and Fantastic Four (owned by Fox, but they need to keep making movies to retain the rights). I know Disney is trying to get the FF back, but Fox has plans for a new reboot for them to keep them.

Lucas already screwed up his own franchise including Indiana Jones and he got tired of all the abuse he has been givin over the years for the prequels, Indy 4, the constant tinkering of the OT, forgetting his promise to bring the untouched OT on BD etc. and his last production was a big flop at the box-office as he decided to call it quits and decides to retire. He knew he had to take care of his family and he had to give his company to someone else as he decided to give it to Disney for 4 billion dollars he got from them and they'll take good care of the company while Lucas is retiring.

Afterall he was one of the first kids to be at Disneyland when it opened and had a friendship with the company for a long time especially giving us those awesome SW/Indy attractions at the parks and Captain EO.

I mean Disney did wonders to other cool stuff they bought like Pixar, Marvel, Ghibli (bringing them to the US to audiences) and The Muppets and now SW/Indiana Jones/Lucasfilm. Plus they hired a good writer this time who can actually do good script writing and a fine director who is more comfortable with SW than Star Trek as JJ is more of a SW fan than a ST fan as he is leaving ST for SW.

Disney will save SW and soon we'll get SW/Indy land at Disneyworld and soon we'll get the unscrewed with cuts of the OT on BD.

I also think the way the prequels turned out also fuels the cynicism and doubts. It's basically saying, "If the prequels were so bad, why should we have reason to believe episodes 7-9 will be any better?"

Plus George Lucas is still the executive producer of the film whom many believe built up the franchise with the original three but also destroyed it completely with the prequels.

I agree with this. Lucas created an amazing world with awesome characters. I think what went wrong with the prequels was Lucas became to possessive with the IP. He tried to do everything and either he didn't listen to anyone or he only had yes men around him who thought everything was a fantastic idea. The ideas around the prequels were not bad. It was the writing, acting, casting and directing that was the problem. If Lucas could have been in an executive producer role and let someone else do the directing and writing, things would have been a lot different I believe.

Disney has a lot riding on Star Wars so I just don't see them "ruining" anything. I believe they will let the powers that be do their jobs and stay away for the most part. I have said it before, but I don't think Abrams would have even taken the job if he wasn't given free rein for the most part. I wouldn't touch the franchise unless I could make the film I wanted to make. If you are going to risk your reputation on a franchise so iconic, you are going to want to have all the control.

My main concern is how the saga will be picked-up after it tied all the loose ends in Return Of The Jedi. It almost seems like an unnecessary continuation after the fall of the empire, the death of the Emperor, and no more Anakin/Vader who (say what you will about Luke/Leia), is the main character at the core of all 6 previous episodes.

Not saying the saga can't be picked back up & done well, but I find it hard to do so without feeling like a desperate plot push or cheesy direct-to-home-video style premise with so much wrapped up in ROTJ.

Here's hoping we're all in for a pleasant surprise from the galaxy far, far away.

Four words...and one name.

The name...Timothy Zahn

The words?

Heir to the Empire!

It's not how they're doing it, but it's been done properly before...

Lucasfilm has announced that Star Wars: Episode VII director J.J. Abrams and Raiders of the Lost Ark writer Lawrence Kasdan have taken over screenwriting duties from Michael Arndt, an Oscar winner for Little Miss Sunshine and nominee for Toy Story 3, who had previously been working on the story.

I see this as good news/bad news. Good news that Kasdan is going to be writing, but bad news that they are shuffling production staff this close to when shooting is supposed to start.
