Disney Weekends Are On
Mon, Feb 18, 02 11:20:16 PM EST

Leko tells us that Walt Disney World is still planning to have Star Wars Weekends this year, with an after party each night at Pleasure Island. The information came to us after some debate if they would still be on or not. Disney has been in the news lately for hugely declining admissions due to the September 11th tragedy. Hopefully, this will spark some interest and growth within the billion dollar theme park.

UPDATE
Imperial_Grunt also tells us that the weekends are still on, but this year, due to "budget restraints" and the such, there will only be ONE weekend. This will be the weekend of May 16th. More as we get it.

I seroiusly doubt this is going to happen. With the opening of Attack of the Clones on May 13th WDW has enough reason to have it all month. I bet they have something special planned. The Star Wars weekends are soooooo much fun. Especially if you are a Star Wars dork like me!!

Yeah, well Disney doesn't make much sense with the cutbacks as of late. I have heard that there will be NO Star Wars weekends this year due to budget cuts. It is not on their schedule for May events either.

Oh well.

speak about star wars-i saw star wars the very first night it opened in my city in 1977.i was a huge star wars fan when i was a kid-i wanted to grow up and be a storm trooper i thought they were really cool.i have a question does anyone remember there were 2 comic books-that were star wars comic books-from the actually movie.part 1 and part 2-the thing is they were really big-not like rest of comics they were huge as in the size like 12 inches by 9 inches.the first one took u through first scene too tatooine-second form that part to the end.were these worth anything?

But then there's not much on there schedule anyway. I would expect it to appear with the May opening times, that's what happened last year.

LFL like to keep people guessing.

The note about the May 16th release is on the ball to. As someone who runs a big Star Wars website (Oh to SPAM or not to SPAM..... ) I am looking at the events around May to see what will be going on.

Certainly a major event at WDW would seem likely, as in the last 2 years, but then a lot has changed in the last 12 months.

Predictable that they are using 9-11 as a scapegoat for Disney's decline, when the problems started long before that. The bigger cause is the very cutbacks Eisner is still pursuing.

I just don't think that they would do this. I think the weekend of the 16th will be the busiest , for obvious reasons as the movie opens and DD has the only DLP projector in the Southeastern US - but I have been to the weekends the last two years and they were very popular then - so I am sure it will continue. Especially in a year with a new movie. I did email WDW and ask them and the reply was to keep checking the events portion of the website. As far as nothing being on that site yet - they have never posted the SW weekends before late March or early April.

If they are first editions and in mint condition then, yes they probably are worth something. You might want to look around the web for a guide to price them. And people call me a Star Wars freak. Oh well. I have to go wash my ewok bed sheets now.

Talk about thread drift!

The other thing to consider is that Celebrations II will be going on during the first weekend in May in Indianapolis. This alone will draw a good portion of the SW faithful away from WDW.

For more on Celebrations, check out the star wars website or www.indyknights.com which is the local fan club which is helping LFL with a good portion of this.

Maybe, but the ticket numbers for Celebration II are very limited. Yes they will draw the hardcore fans but not so much the general public.

Besides, I think Celebration II is all but sold out.

Yeah, the Star Wars Celebration is definately gonna draw most of the Star Wars fans. I dunno about the Star Wars weekends, though. I just hope they don't not have it this year, cause that would kinda be ruining a tradition.

Maybe in the US, but not so much from the rest of the world. 3 days at celebration or 2 weeks at WDW, with SW Weekends. I know where I'd be. :D

Ummmm....
Before you all go bashing Eisner for this one, I suggest ou read the article..Its a Orlando Sentinel article. Posted at the above mentioned website....For all you Star Wars Fans...it was Lucas who put the halt to this years weekends...being he has a weekend event of his own in a midwestern city. It also says he plans on cooperating with Disney again in the future.
Sorry!
Tig:)

Julian Potter sends in this letter he got from the folks at Disneyworld:

Dear David,
Thank you for contacting WALT DISNEY WORLD! During the week-end that Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones is released nationwide to theaters, the Disney-MGM Studios theme park will celebrate the films opening, with additional Star Wars characters in the theme park, limited-edition pins available for fans and more Star Wars characters in the "Disney Stars In Motorcars" parade.

With our yearlong focus on the "100 Year of Magic" celebration, we will not hold a month-long Star Wars-themed event this year. Instead, our weekend event will enhance the "100 Years of Magic" celebration to give Star Wars movie fans the chance to mingle with more than 20, camera friendly, Star Wars characters and to purchase Star Wars-themed, limited release pins, available May 17-19 at the Disney-MGM Studios.

If you have questions or need further assistance, feel free to contact us.

Please include your full name, E-Mail address, and reservation number if applicable on all correspondence.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Melissa Hunt

That's right! We all know that Disney is 100% responsible for the national recession that we have been in for a little over a year now! As a matter of fact, if Eisner hadn't taken his budget cuts so far the rest of the tourism industry in central Florida would be doing a lot better as well!

The fact still remains that out of all the parks, Disney's have been hurt the least and that even after the loss in tourism, Disney resorts still have a higher occupancy rate across the board than the rest of the Orlando area... The simple fact is that most guests aren't even aware of the cutbacks. Many people still go into the parks each day for the very first time (or for the first time in many years) and aren't likely to notice any of what we are talking about here at all.
