Star Wars Weekends 2002?

Just wondering if anyone has heard anything about this event yet? Are they running them next year at MGM, especially with the new movie being released on May 16th?

Star Wars weekends are VERY popular at MGM...So i would expect it do DEFINIATLY be a big event especially with the opening of Episode 2 the same time of year. Nothing is confirmed yet, but I wouldn't doubt seeing some HUGE..uh...updates made to the Star Wars area of MGM for the event...

It is rumored that it will be for a full month this year, rather than weekends only

Well, you are someone who would know. I'm not doubting you at all. I can't help but wonder what they will use to fill the whole week with, though. I mean, they've had a DJ, and a parade and some costumed characters but hasn't the only really big thing been the star appearances? They've had enough trouble getting two of them to show up each weekend in the past. I can't imagine that they would have somebody there every day... I guess they could do more on the making of the movies or something (seeing as how it's the studios and all) Any ideas on how this might work, Tiggerman?

Celebrities on weekends only, and characters/special star wars events on every other day

Yes Star Wars (just) Weekends this coming may. They only draw back this year is that they are fighting for guests the first weekend in may due to the fact that Star Wars Celebrations II is going on at the sametime on the otherside of the country. Lets hope all the Star wars Stars and Fans come to Disney instead!

I recall reading once a long time ago in a forum not so far away... that disney was planning on revamping Star Tours to include a podracer sequence. i always assumed that they'd finish with it in time for the opening of the next movie and star wars weekends in may. I suppose this hasn't happend and isn't being planned on since I haven't heard anything in awhile. Anyone know differently?

it WAS going to be done by now...that's why they made the gift shop area look like Tatooine--for the Podracer scene. George Lucas was set to make the movie for the ride, but then he started Episode II: The Clone Wars, and it got pushed back. I dunno if he'll agree to make the movie for the ride now or go right ahead and make Episode III...purely his prerogative, b/c disney wants him to make it.

Nope, the "Endor Vendor" rehab had been planned long before the "Podrace rumor". I believe the "Endor Vendor" to "Tatooine Traders" rehab is what sparked the podrace rumor....

Actially...reading the funny papers (Disney notes etc) the reason for the delay in the StarTours 2 rehab is due to the conflict of what George Lucas WANTS..and what Disney is willing to PAY for. He wants a new projection technology to replace the old (and very nausiating) one thats there now....that would be EXTERAMLY pricey...

Now...here we go with what I know to be UNCONFIRMED rumors::

The little kid who played anakin in episode one supposidly did an interview where he let it slip that he filmed a few pod racing scenes for a new ride. (This is most likley where the PodRace theme rumor spawned from)...

I have seen a Star Tours II "Prelimnary" pin..weather or not it was authentic or a good fake I can't determine...but on it was in fact...a Pod Racer...

IF Disney was to debeut the new Star Tours ride...they would of started the hype by now (give people a chance to get tickets etc)...seeing how everything everyone (myself included) is saying is from what we THINK...and there has been no confirmation on ANY of it.....I don't see a new ride system until 2003...and even then (due to Mission Space opening)...I would be shocked...

I don't think Episode II even has podracing, so it kinda wouldn't make sense at this point. However, having a store called Tatooine Traders on a ride called the Endor Express makes little sense...they were obviously planning SOMETHING at the time. It wouldn't be the first time disney opened a ride's gift shop before the ride itself opened...

The production dates from Episode-II (Attack of the Clones) & III were decided back in 1995, they have (had) no impact on any refurb/redesign of the ride elements.

I believe the problems (Finacial implications) of implementing a new digital projection system are far more likely to be the issue than anything else.

Plus, if a prequel trilogy theme were to be in place, such as the Pod Race, then the AT-AT and other Original Trilogy vehicles would probably go as well as they would have no relevance to a prequel trilogy ride.

That may have been the source, however the interview in question, with Jake Lloyd, referred to his filming of sequences for the Pod Racer computer game, not for Disney.

you are correct, there will be no podracing in episode II attack of the clones (thank god! i hated that!). the movie will mostly be more of a romance... but it should still be good... what am i talking about? it will be good its star wars!

Well, that isn't strictly true actually, but it will be the 'romantic one' AotC is going to be highly action-packed.

Anyway, that isn't the point of ths post.

News has circulated the Star Wars community this week that Star Wars Weekends have been cancelled due to falling gate numbers at WDW.

According to a Star Tours cast member at any rate.

Anyone got any insider information on this that they would care to share.

From what I heard, Star Tours will be changed not until Episode 3 is released and so the new trilogy is completed. This is because Lucas wants to see what type of ride can he invent to mix the three new movies. I also was told that even the simulator idea would not be used with the new ride, but a new technology sort of the one used for the Spiderman Ride, including 3D.

is the ride building big enough for that? Also, by the time Episode III comes out, Spiderman will be old news...Mission: Space will be the talk of the town.

Whilst the Spiderman ride is impressive, the technology behind it isn't that fantastic. - IMHO-OC

Back on topic though, does anyone have any info on SW Weekends not being run this year.
