Star Wars weekend - i don't get it

Nothing wrong with it, it's actually pretty cool. Part of the event is having everyone dressed up in Star Wars gear or full costume. It's like going to Comic-Con. Sure, you could go in normal clothes and be boring, or you could go dressed as your favorite character or wearing gear for your favorite show. It's not "rather tragic." If that were the case then people wearing jersey's of their favorite players at a sporting event would be tragic. People get really into things, nothing wrong with that, just having fun (really, that's the best way to get into something, go all out and don't care what people like you think).

Basically, lighten up, let people have fun. Chances are they had their vacation already planned, found out it's Star Wars weekend, and decided to have fun with it (I wonder if any people dressed as Star Trek/Doctor Who/Firefly/Battlestar characters and acted like they got caught up in a different world or something like that).

Helpful hint. Don't go to a Ren Fair. You probably wouldn't like it.

I was about to say the same thing. Especially since there it's not just Ren Fair type outfits. Went last year and one guy was dressed as a character from Assassin's Creed (with the legitimate replica of the hidden wrist blade), a surprising amount of comic book characters which was kind of weird, and I was dressed as the 11th Doctor, which was pretty cool getting recognized and it fit since he's a time traveler. And of course a lot of cool Ren Fair costumes.

Several of my customers went to WDW this year specifically for the Star Wars weekends. This was, in every case their first times at a Disney Star Wars event. Something they had longed to do at some point and now they were able to go. When they came back they told me about the fabulous times they had, their meet & greets, special pins & souvenirs they were able to purchase, and the unique Star Wars treats. For them it made their trip.
Now I'm a Star Wars fan but not enough of one to want to go to WDW just because of the Star Wars events held, but I look at it as anything Disney can do to come up with events that build excitement and enjoyment into visiting their parks its worth doing. They should look at ways of doing more of these types of themed weekends.
A lot of people grumble about why DHS isnt as much movie/hollywood themed as it could be. This brings in the guests and the park interest builds. Maybe it can lead to improving more of the park areas.

So was at the parks again last week. Friday at Hollywood Studios and the start of the Star Wars weekend. I really didn't see what exactly Disney were offering. They had the characters Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, etc all around at various points for photo opportunities, you had Goofy, Daisy and co dressing up as Star Wars characters, there was an interview over at the Fantasmic seating area for an hour with some obscure past cast member who had a background scene. They had a stage set up infront of the Chinese theatre where they would hold some quizes with kids, and finally a DJ to play dance music that was not Star Wars related.

The only redeeming feature was the fantastic fireworks at the end of the night - similar to the fireworks you see over at the Magic Kingdom. They were excellent.

Yet the place was packed out, with grown men in their Star Wars tshirts, grown men with lightsabers, it was all rather tragic at times to see.

I just didn't quite get it. I didn't see exactly what Disney bought to the table?!

I am not sure which cast memeber you are talking about, but only one of the four guests opening weekend, Amy Allen, could be considered a background character. Ian McDiarmid is a major character in 4 of the 6 films, Ashley Eckstein is one of the main voice actors on Clones Wars and now Rebels, and Tiya Sircar is one of the main actors on Rebels. Any Star Wars fan would really enjoy seeing any of these three.

And let's not forget they are having Frank Oz one weekend, he rarely does convention appearances.

You are correct, but this dude should make a full time career out of it though.

Nah, he's small potatoes compared to some gaping douches on these forums. Like that stunt that Weslley kid pulled last night.

Ive been convinced that I need to put them on ignore rather than suggesting a career in podiatrial protection polishing or tell them exactly what they thing.

Think of it as more of an excuse to get together with other Star Wars fans. Disney is just giving them the space and making it "official." Disney contributes characters, an attraction, a themed area, and a show all related to Star Wars.

RunDisney is the same thing, people often ask why we pay hundreds of dollars for Disney races when all we get is a few characters and get to run through the park before it opens, you either get it or you don't. It's as much about the people and experience as it is the location. Anytime you can combine 2 loves (Disney and Star Wars, Disney and Running, etc) and can bring together thousands of like minded individuals it's just fun. Disney doesn't really "need" to do anything beyond organizing it, theming it, giving us some special elements you only get at the event, and giving the fans a place to meet up. I've made friends all over the country through runDisney and look forward to the next race for not only the personal accomplishment but also to reunite with all of them.

Blocking takes the fun out of it Dave...

While yes... its been explained (repeatedly) to me (over and over) that I should not tell people off nor give them tastes of their own medicine. All off limits are Goodfellas references and I'm just gonna assume any Duggar family references are just verboten as well.

That is if i want to continue posting on these forums.

As for the OP? I've never understood car selfies. Therefore I don't take them. I just don't whine about it on a message board.
