100 minute Slinky line at 7:10 all the way backed up to Mermaid. I guess his is a byproduct of letting people in the park so early.

So from people's experiences, would it be a valid tactic to get to the park before opening, get in the boarding group stuff while heading directly to Slinky first thing?

There is a DVC Moonlight Magic on October 6 this year and we will hopefully be a part of it and I'm really curious to see how they do this for that event. When we done Moonlight Magic at AK they gave us a ride time and paper pass for the Safari so as not to flood that ride with a huge line that would have kept people from doing other things. I wonder if they'll do that for ROTR at Moonlight Magic? This whole "boarding group" thing is just a limited time thing though right for them to try and somehow manage the demand? I mean they don't intend for it to perpetually be this way do they? It seems to me if this is something people are fine with then they should maybe try it for FOP as well because clearly people still go crazy for that ride as well. When we done Moonlight Magic at AK Pandora was still a few weeks from opening and so I didn't see how they managed that ride during events but I would assume people would go just as crazy for it at Moonlight Magic. I will say that everything else was literally a walk on and sometimes we'd just stay on. I can't even tell you how many times we rode Everest that night so I would assume that if there are any devout Toy Story Mania fans they will sure get to spend some quality time with it at Moonlight Magic while everyone else goes crazy for Slinky Dog and ROTR and Tower of Terror stands lonely in the distance saying "am I dead to you"? LOL!

8:11am and it seems the ride is not operating? No boarding group are listed as being called. I’m in 67; any idea when I will be called?

I suppose I should have known but taking the bus was terrible. I got up at 5:15, was at the Grand Floridian bus stop at 6 and did not make it through the gate until 7 on the dot. One bus came at 6 and a second at 6:30. But a bus to Animal Kingdom came at 6:15 even though that park would not open until 9! What?!!! (I am in a scooter and had to skip the first bus).

Tomorrow I am going to take my car even though that means disassembling and reassembling the scooter. Sigh.

If it opens anytime soon, it can end up being like last Friday (red line). Group 67 was called around 1pm;

to further what @nickys said above....the steps in order:

1) You and your party scan your band and enter Disney Hollywood Studios .... to be safe, be inside the Park before 7:30
2) Open app....you'll see this screen 1st
3) Click Find Out More
View attachment 439479

You see this screen next....click Join Boarding Group

By the way, at 7:53 this A.M. there are still back Groups available

View attachment 439478

Next screen....click on everyone in your party that you want in your Boarding Group. Your Boarding Group will be constructed from your Family and Friends list, so make sure you have added everyone to your Family and Friends!

You'll get this next:
View attachment 439480

Then you'll get this...and you've succeeded in joining/building your Boarding Group! Our group was created at 7:32 A.M. and wasn't called until 7:41 P.M.....you'll see more below

View attachment 439491

Finally you receive this, prompting you to head over to the ride....you'll notice our group wasn't called until 7:41 P.M., and we were given to 9:41 P.M. to make it over to the ride que (9:41 is 41 mins AFTER Park Closing)

View attachment 439492

Once you make over to the Que, you'll scan once where all the CM "Guards" are making sure no one gets in without a BG. This is a holding area just outside the ride; I assume this is for those people who have arrived and are waiting for the rest of their Boarding Group. Then you'll scan again as you enter the actual line....once you've gotten in line, the line moves very swiftly, almost so swift you'll slow down just to absorb the line que....it is pretty cool!
Will they keep the ride open after the rest of the park closes or is that a mistake and you really need to get there before closing?

Unless you get there super early, there would already be a ton of people in the holding area in front of Chinese theater, waiting to go to TSL after 7am. It's a slow moving group/process to get there, so you can surely do the BG stuff while on the way.

For me, I always head to Tower of Terror first thing since it's short lines and rerides isn't much of a wait.

Yeah, I had planned to get there as early as possible to get a good position to rope drop to Slinky, then head to GE. I have my Oga's reservation at 11 so I was hoping to experience GE then head to my FPs in the rest of the park after noon.

So I was at HS on Saturday, there was a CM standing at the queue entrance with a sign saying what boarding groups were being called. And then there was a queue outside the ride with many people waiting. Is that people just hanging out for the next group to be called, or do they open it up if the line gets low? This was about 7 on a 8 closing night. Though the line seemed really long, if they close but there is some BG's in line, do they still get to go on, like they do with other rides?

Child swap. Just visit a CM with an iPad near the entrance. It’s very easy.
Can you (or anyone else) offer any more specifics? I'm familiar with standard child swap, but information for this ride has been sparse. All I have seen is that every rider needs a boarding group.

Is it just like standard child swap, with the prerequisite that everyone first needs a BG?

Yes, Galaxy's Edge, RotR, as well as many of the GE shops were open after Park closing in early December, and I assume it continue to be on most nights.....with all entrances guarded by many CMs.

The time we rode with BG 77 (pics in thread), we got in line for Slinky at 8:45ish as the line was really short and we couldn't pass up the opportunity. We departed Slinky AFTER 9:00 (Park closing), and headed from TSL to GE. The entrance pathway (at the top of the hill in TSL) had many CMs restricting entrance without a showing proof of a BG. They were really militant and it was nice to see how serious they were in not allowing anyone in. One of those CMs escorted us to the bottom of the hill to another group of CMs guarding and we had to show BG proof a second time. Again, it was refreshing to see.......

Anyhoo, at Park closing, GE entrances are closed/guarded, but the Land still has many guests. We rode the ride and hung around in GE til after 10:00.....were even able to take in Oga's Canteen for a few minutes (no food, just drinks as the kitchen had closed).

Looks like boarding has started a few minutes ago with 13-17. I'm sitting at 54 for my first run today.

On a related note, anyone have any great spots with a plug for me to do a bit of work on the laptop while enjoying the people watching?

Those peeps you saw standing there had a Boarding Group that had yet to be called. Many people show, up beforehand and wait until it's time to go in. So yes, they were part of the next groups to be called.

Let's say the sign said Boarding Groups 63-79....many of those people had Boarding Groups of 70 and above....

The ride stays open after Park closing....so many if not all of those peeps you saw would have been able to ride, assuming they were part of a Boarding Group....

By the way, once they let the BGs in, the line move really fast....you might even slow down, let others pass, just to take in the que....

100% agreed. Also,
when you approach final kylo he's behind you, so you can't see him sitting there. He starts speaking and you can't see him yet. I feel like in the other car you approach and can see the ceiling already down. Am I remembering correctly?
The other transport is too angled away from the down'd ceiling, facing the closing door and windows. Unless you intentionally look to the left of you, against the motion, you wouldn't see the down ceiling until the cue comes up and lights turn on revealing Kylo. The only downfall to this other transport is that you face the down'd ceiling longer after it comes down, compared to the leading transport vehicle.
You can really see it in this video, linked timestamp too:

The camera operator goes against the motion and you see the ceiling before Kylo reveals himself, but the transport is angled away so a normal person (also shown in video in front of camera), doesn't see it, until they very moment where Kylo pulls you in and around.
