Ezra Bridger, the young Jedi in training (voiced by Taylor Gray), ignites a crossguard lightsaber similar to the one wielded by Kylo Ren in the new film – only this one is green and seems to be of much sturdier construction.

We know from a Disneyland display of props for The Force Awakens that Ren’s saber, with its distinctive laser quillons, was an “ancient design” that the the Darth Vader obsessed young man recreated himself in crude fashion. In the upcoming episodes of Rebels, Ezra will apparently encounter a similar weapon.

I think it makes sense that we will see numerous variations and configurations on the lightsaber as time goes on. It is really no different than the variation of bladed weapons we see in real life

We have already seen a double lightsaber and well as ones with curved hilts (Count Dooku and Asajj Ventress). A claymore style saber was all but inevitable.

About the only thing that seems to be consistent is a straight blade.

Season three of Star Wars Rebels will be its final season and will setup Star Wars Rogue One for December. It will be interesting if they finally kill of Ashoka since her fate is kind of mystery right now. Maybe she really will show up in Rogue One. Rebels will be replaced with a new Star Wars animated show created by the same people again.

The interesting this about this is that since they made the old EU non-cannon, they could use this character but give him a different fate, so he won't necessarily survive the Rebels time period.

Yeah. The way the current set-up is, Rebels can cherry pick all the good stuff from the EU and do whatever they want with it, while ignoring all the many, many stupid bits, like the guy with lightsabers coming out of his arms and knees.
